We will listen to musical selections by master jazz improvisors such as Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, and Keith Jarrett, interspersed with quotes from Zen masters and jazz musicians to help us gain some insights into creativity.According to Dean, the similarities in their comments on the creative process is striking. It seems as though the masters and musicians are engaged in a similar practice, touching quite deeply the creativity which lies at the heart of all things. It’s a place that is open to all of us, all the time, in the midst of various activities.

Seek Nothing Just Sit_10.13.21
This talk is inspired by the short film "Seek Nothing, Just Sit" which Lei made me aware of. It's a documentary about practice at Antaiji in Japan. Antaiji is the temple where Shohaku Okumura first trained under his teacher, Uchiyama Roshi, who trained under Kodo Sawaki aka Homeless Kodo....It's a beautiful depiction of simple temple life and I'd like to use it as a counterpoint, as well as a point of inspiration, for our lives as lay people, sometimes simple and sometimes not so much. In this connection I will also talk about the importance of our 'home temple', Jikoji, as a place where we can engage in the style of practice depicted in this film.
