Help your children learn to have a healthy skepticism of strangers online and identify red flags that they may not be who they claim. SOSA recommends making this lesson interactive by creating a fake profile together, which will help them truly see how easy it is for someone to fake their identity. Reed Jeppson, a Salt Lake City teen, went outside to feed his dogs one Sunday afternoon in 1964 and vanished, with the dogs, into thin air. Decades later, his heartbroken family still has so many unanswered questions. If Reed is alive today, he is 74 years old. He’s white, with medium blond hair and blue eyes. In May 2021, Crime Junkie covered the 1981 murder of Father Patrick Ryan and the subsequent conviction of James Reyos. Now almost 40 years since James' arrest, officials discovered that there is untested evidence that has been sitting idle...which proved James was innocent and was only uncovered because two Crime Junkies listening to our episode decided to make a little noise. However, leadership at the Saline County Sheriff's Office have publicly shared their "personal opinions" that Jade died by suicide. While they maintain that the case is open, it's not active. I am deeply troubled by the lack of progress. Mixed messaging, where an agency's public statements are not consistent with the official designation of a case, can erode public trust. This can lead to skepticism about the agency's competence or motives. Public statements can also inadvertently influence potential witnesses. If the public believes the investigating agency has already reached a conclusion, even informally, individuals might be less likely to come forward with information, thinking it might not be considered relevant. In 1843, Daniel M’Naghten gunned down another man in broad daylight. But when he was taken to trial things got complicated.
