S1 Ep 24Ep24. A.I., Don’t Mimic Us: Expand Beyond Our Human-Like Thinking for Limitless Possibilities with Turing Post Newsletter Founder Ksenia Se
Do machines think? Find out in today’s episode with Ksenia Se, the Founder of the Turing Post newsletter. Over 20 years of her career, Ksenia has donned many hats: from New York Chief Editor of a global media platform to fintech executive to PR Director at Moscow's first Contemporary Art Center to Journalist, and even to a Llama Walker. Regardless of her role, her passion for technology has always remained. In 2018, after a brief affair with blockchain, A.I. and machine learning caught her attention and became her fields of self-study. By 2019, she had started thinking about a media publication named Turing Post to feature digital avatars, articles written by robots, generative art, and more – but the technology wasn't there yet. Then in 2020 during the pandemic, Ksenia and Jesus Rodriguez conceived an educational A.I. newsletter. Named TheSequence, it became her gateway to machine learning, where she currently spearheads partnerships. When the buzz around ChatGPT grew, she revived her first idea and launched Turing Post, now serving as her A.I. canvas. As an avid learner, Ksenia helps her readers understand A.I.'s roots, its current impact on society, and where it might take us in the future. Importantly, she discusses how we might steer its course. In today’s episode, you’ll learn more about the history of large language models, known as LLMs, in addition to the importance of Alan Turing, how the Turing Test is still relevant, and interesting questions Turing asked that we’re still exploring. Ksenia also shares how she uses A.I. in her own work, thoughts on the future of humans augmenting our abilities with technology, and why we shouldn’t anthropomorphize tech too much, but instead should expand beyond our human-like thinking to not limit ourselves and the possibilities of evolving with technology. S1 Ep 15Ep15. Crisis of Imagination: How to Build the A.I. Future We Want with Mutualism from Freelancers Union Founder Sara Horowitz
A.I., the writers’ strike, and a crisis of imagination — Sara Horowitz, a lifelong mutualist, shares how we can build the future we want with mutualism. Sara is the founder of the Freelancers Union and the Freelancers Insurance Company. A labor lawyer, former chair of the board of the New York Federal Reserve, and recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship, Sara has been featured on NPR, and in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Atlantic, among other publications. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and daughter. Sara is currently working to build the Mutualist Society. She is also the author of the book Mutualism and writes about how we need to build our next safety net in America through the local organizations we know and trust. Mutualism exists in 4 principal areas: unions, cooperatives, mutual aid groups, and faith-based institutions, which we’ll explore more in this episode. Her vision and tenacity to organize and build the world she wants to live in is admirable. She’s truly a visionary thinker when it comes to the economy, labor, and societal change. Her community-oriented approach stems from her grandparents, who were garment workers in the 1920s, and from her grandfather, who helped organize and was vice president of the Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. In today’s episode, you’ll learn more about the historical context of labor movements and how they relate to today’s culture, including the current writers' and actors’ strikes. Sara shares her thoughts on the future of technology, including A.I. and DAOs (or decentralized autonomous organizations), and how we can harness this technology from a mutualistic approach that centers on collectivism, community, and building collaboratively. Explore Sara’s vision of embracing a mutualistic future that can bring about positive societal change and a better way forward. S1 Ep 14E14. Not Deepfaked! I Cloned Myself! Meet Helen 2.ODD, My Digital Double. Discover How I Made My A.I.-Created Custom Synthetic Avatar.
Ever wanted to clone yourself? Now you can! Enter A.I.-created synthetic media beyond deepfakes. In this special episode of Creativity Squared, you’ll meet Helen 2.ODD, our host Helen Todd’s custom synthetic avatar, and learn how "she" was made. You read that right — Helen digitally cloned herself! And now there are two of her: the human Helen and her digital double Helen 2.ODD. It’s important to know that Helen 2.ODD isn’t a deepfake, because Helen owns all of the IP associated with “her.” The digital avatar market is projected to be $270 billion by 2030, and custom synthetic avatars are part of this market alongside stock avatars. It’s no surprise since this new form of media can do things humans can’t do, like create multiple videos simultaneously and often speak more languages than their human counterparts do. Helen can only speak English whereas Helen 2.ODD can currently speak eight languages. Render, Creativity Squared partner and sponsor, captured Helen’s visual likeness, cloned her voice, and using their AI-integrating application, generated Helen 2.ODD, a hyper-realistic avatar. There are less than a thousand known custom synthetic avatars in existence. This groundbreaking A.I. technology can help anyone who has a lot of content that they want to bring alive in video without going on camera, from business owners to educators to influencers. Visit https://CreativitySquared.com or the Creativity Squared YouTube channel (https://bit.ly/YouTubeC2) or search #Helen2ODD to see how photo-realistic Helen 2.ODD is. Creativity Squared is collaborating with our partner and sponsor Render to bring their avatar experience to Cincinnati, OH, on October 25 and 26, so anyone can digitally clone themselves as well. S1 Ep 8Ep8. A.I. Will Never Be Human: Discover How Language Shapes Our Reality & Why Empathy is Core to Human Connection with Eric Solomon
In this episode of Creativity Squared, Eric Solomon joins us to discuss how language shapes our reality, his approach to the human operating system, the promise and pitfalls of A.I., the importance of intentionality, and how we need to remember that machines are not human and we need to embrace human-to-human connection now more than ever. Eric has worked at the intersection of psychology, brand-building, technology, and creativity for over 20 years. He has held marketing leadership positions for some of the top brands in the world including YouTube, Spotify, Google, and Instagram. He also served as the Chief Marketing Officer for Bonobos, a DTC e-retailer owned by Walmart. Eric entered the business world through the doors of academia, earning his Master’s and Ph.D. in cognitive psychology prior to leading research and strategy for award-winning creative agencies. He currently serves as the Founder and CEO of The Human OS™, a strategic advisory platform that Eric built from the ground up. Eric started his PhD program in 1999 exploring cognitive psychology with a focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence. This is not only fascinating but was also really the early days of the application of language to this field. To lay the foundation for ethical and responsible A.I. development, Eric suggests the necessity of an operating system. This operating system should address concerns such as understanding how A.I. systems work, involving diverse voices in the decision-making process, and establishing clear beliefs and behaviors with a clearly defined end goal of what we’re working towards — and purely profits isn’t what he wants to see. S1 Ep 7Ep7. Adobe on A.I. & Trust: Understand the Urgency for Media Transparency & Ethical Generative A.I. with Andy Parsons from Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative
Building trust online and establishing authenticity, transparency, and ethical A.I. is a big task — and it’s one that Andy Parsons, the Senior Director of Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), is tackling head-on. In this episode of Creativity Squared, Andy discusses the need for a future of verifiably authentic content of all kinds to combat disinformation. With collaborators across hardware (including brands like Leica Camera!), software, publishing, and social platforms, the CAI is empowering communicators, journalists, and artists with secure provenance. In addition to CAI, Andy explains the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), an initiative working on an open technical standard for content authenticity that’s adoption is needed now more than ever. Through these standards, technology, and open source collaboration, Adobe is helping lead the way to restore trust and transparency to the media we experience. In this era where deep fakes blur the lines of reality and as we approach the 2024 elections in the U.S., this work is urgent. Andy strongly believes in media literacy and explains some of the ways Adobe is providing curriculum to students. Andy also dives into Adobe's Firefly, a creative generative A.I. engine, and the company’s ethical approach to A.I. development. Democratizing creativity, Andy highlights how Firefly amplifies human potential and respects artists' rights, ensuring content authenticity from the outset. Discover the use cases for content credentials and when to consider opting in to use them, why, and how much information to reveal. If bringing trust to media resonates with you, Andy’s main call to action is to get involved! This work is not done in a silo. We should all be active participants in the conversation and educate ourselves. He invites our listeners to join the CAI, engage with the community on Discord, and contribute to the mission of bringing trust to media. Helen, your Creativity Squared host, is a proud CAI member! Andy also drops some tantalizing teases about Adobe features in the pipeline — enjoy! S1 Ep 6Ep6. Keep A.I. Absurd: Embrace A.I. Creating Bizarre Content with Advertising Creative Director Phil Gable
Advertising Creative Director Phil Gable joins Creativity Squared for a laugh-out-loud, mostly PG-13 conversation that touches on the current state of the advertising industry, the dangers of censoring A.I., and examples of his absurd A.I.-created content. Spoiler: ChatGPT had a hard time nailing down a conversation between Alice Cooper and Jay Leno in iambic pentameter about wood! Phil has been working in advertising for 25 years. He started as a copywriter when the Internet was young, then moved onto Creative Director roles at some big agencies in New York and Atlanta as well as some smaller ones in the Midwest before setting out on his own. He’s currently freelancing as a Creative Director and Strategist for several agencies in New York City, and he also runs his own production company called Porcupine Armadillo which specializes in weird, low-budget comedy. Unsurprisingly then, Phil wants to keep A.I. absurd and sees it as a playground for creating bizarre content. A.I. tools are handy for him as a creative director when it comes to editing, efficiency, or finding a word; however, actual humans are still needed to create really good strategies and new ideas. A.I. can help us appreciate strange, chaotic things and Phil makes his case for being appointed czar of bizarreness by the U.S. government.\ Be prepared to laugh at his dark humor and wildly interesting takes on A.I. and humanity in this episode of Creativity Squared! S1 Ep 5Ep5. Custom Synths Are Here: Discover Use Cases for Your Digital Likeness and Content Creation Efficiencies with A.I. from Jon Tota
Have you ever wished you had a duplicate version of yourself? If the answer is yes, this episode with Jon Tota is for you! Jon has spent his 25-year career at the forefront of all aspects of online digital media, including what we’ll be discussing on today’s episode which are photo realistic digital replicas of people using A.I. These are also known as digital doubles or twins, synthetic avatars, and people’s digital likeness. Jon started as a screenwriter in the early 90’s and then went on to design computer networks and trading systems for Wall Street firms. Jon co-founded Edulence in 2002 and launched Knowledgelink as one of the first video training platforms in 2004. Edulence was acquired in 2020 by ELB Learning to make Knowledgelink the Learning Management System for one of the most trusted brands in the Learning & Development space. Fast forward to today, Jon creates immersive audio and learning content at Syntax + Motion which produces online courses, interactive video series, and podcast shows. He’s also at the forefront of A.I. synthetic media as CEO of Render. Render provides Digital Likeness solutions for personal brand businesses, thought leaders, influencers, and business leaders who want to leverage their synthetic, A.I.-powered Likeness to communicate more effectively online and create audio and video content from anywhere without going on camera. As a sponsor of this podcast, Render is going to be creating a digital replica of my image and likeness, and an accurate clone of my voice so I’ll be able to create hyper-realistic avatar content with ease later this summer and I couldn’t be more excited about it! We’ll also be bringing a content capture event to Cincinnati in October so sign up for our free newsletter at CreativitySquared.com to not miss out on any of the fun! In today’s conversation with Jon, you’ll discover what digital doubles are, their application use cases in our 2D world, the ethics around them, the power of prompting from a developer’s perspective, how ChatGPT can help writers, how A.I. can break down barriers of entry for people to pursue new creative outlets, and why Jon always starts with a script. Dispatch: On Realizing the Potential of Our Humanity: Support Artists. Support the Writers on Strike. #WGAStrong
bonus––– On Realizing the Potential of Our Humanity I support the writers on strike. It’s unacceptable that we live in a country where a company that made over $10B this quarter has writers, people who are indispensable to its industry, who are struggling to make ends meet. Where in 2021, the combined yearly pay for the top six Hollywood CEOs surpassed $770 million while pay for TV writers has fallen by 23% over the last decade. This reality is a reflection of us. And if we want a different reality, one where creators thrive, where writers can fearlessly play with A.I., where people have equity and get paid fairly for the work they do, regardless of changes in distribution channels. Where new forms of expression and technology aren’t threats to art. Then we have to create it, together. A.I. isn’t the problem. We are. And it’s on us to course correct. To choose people over profits. Each and every person is inherently valuable and deserves the right to a decent life. If we are to realize the potential of our humanity, we have to collectively CHANGE. TO BELIEVE IT TO BE POSSIBLE. TO BELIEVE A BETTER FUTURE IS TRULY POSSIBLE. Do you believe it in your gut? Then how will we get there? Support artists. Especially trans artists. They’ll show us the way. -Helen Todd The Human Behind Creativity Squared CreativitySquared.com #CreativitySquared #WGAStrong DISPATCH SHOW NOTES: https://creativitysquared.com/podcast/dispatch-on-realizing-the-potential-of-our-humanity-support-artists-support-the-writers-on-strike-wagstrong/ JOIN CREATIVITY SQUARED Sign up for our free weekly newsletter: https://creativitysquared.com/newsletter Become a premium member: https://creativitysquared.com/supporters SUBSCRIBE Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform: https://creativitysquared.com Subscribe for more videos: https://youtube.com/@creativity_squared/?sub_confirmation=1 CONNECT with C^2 https://instagram.com/creativitysquaredpodcast https://facebook.com/CreativitySquaredPodcast https://giphy.com/channel/CreativitySquared https://tumblr.com/blog/creativitysquared https://tiktok.com/@creativitysquaredpodcast #CreativitySquared CONNECT with Helen Todd, the human behind C^2 https://instagram.com/helenstravels https://twitter.com/helenstravels https://linkedin.com/in/helentodd https://pinterest.com/helentodd Creativity Squared explores how creatives are collaborating with artificial intelligence in your inbox, on YouTube, and on your preferred podcast platform. Jey Van-Sharp aka the “/Prompt Papi” joins Creativity Squared for a conversation that touches on everything from culture as data to imagineering and Beauty and The Beast. Jey, a Venezuelan kid raised in New York City, co-founded MyÜberLife Consulting Group. MÜLF is a global consultancy specializing in providing innovative solutions to help geniuses, creators, celebrities, executives, and companies navigate the complexities of modern business and achieve success in their endeavors. He sees the current zeitgeist around artificial intelligence as either epicly optimistic or full of skepticism. However, there’s more than that. We’re at the intersection of culture, creativity, commerce, and community in a new age of intelligence. When it comes to A.I., education and literacy are key in addition to A.I. tools and language everyday people can use. It’s also an exciting time where creatives now have the advantage and can use A.I. as a $160,000 assistant to iterate and amplify their work more. Creativity brings ideas to life, and Jey is all about manifesting positive change and bringing people together for a better world. Jey’s focus when it comes to the implications of A.I. is how we can keep things safe and make people more productive, especially in his own communities. He also believes in looking inward and leaning into your creativity. His advice to creatives: Don’t get overwhelmed by the uncertainty and fast-speed at which this technology is coming. Lean into the uncertainty and your creativity. And most interestingly: Can A.I. Walt Disney write a business plan? Find out!
