WRITING AND PODCASTING A NOVEL 2 NOV 2020 Todays Topic Welcome friend to Create Art Podcast where we create more than we consume. I am Timothy Kimo Brien your thankful head instigator with over 20 years in arts and education helping you tame your inner critic and provide you with commentary, interviews, discussions, and projects that will inspire you to create art. This month I will be podcasting daily and writing a novel in 30 days. I am participating in NaPodPoMo and NaNoWriMo. You will be able to listen to what I wrote for the day and read it at the same time. I like to practice what I preach when it comes to art so I am challenging myself to write and having you come along for the ride. I hope this inspires you to accomplish your goals with your art and if you would like to share what you are doing email me at [email protected] The Story So Far 2 Nov 2020 day count 1565 cumulative count 3507 Carl got into his car. On the dash, the clock flashed 9:00. He was about 10 minutes away from the doctor’s office and he would make it with a few minutes to spare. He turned on the car and opened the windows. Lit a cigarette from the crushed pack and sucked I the fumes for a moment. He switched his phone to a podcast he was listening to yesterday that he wanted to finish and pulled the car out of the parking spot. He was sure that the conversation would be about the recent MRI he had and all that entailed, more MRI’s, his doctor recommending another procedure for more in depth testing, more money to be spent that he would have rather saved for a rainy day. Its not that he did not have insurance, it is just that with every test, with every appointment, he was always rubbing up against his annual maximum benefit. During his last brain surgery, he hit his maximum that year just from that one procedure and it did not slow the glacial growth of the tumor. Sure, everything was “free” for the rest of the year, but he had to call his brother to help him after the procedure to watch him for 4 days. He hated calling on anyone for assistance, especially his family. These thoughts and others brought him to the doctor’s office without him realizing it. The building was a three-level box near the mall. He had to maneuver the car around the back as the parking lot was already full at this time of day. This office was not like his primary care docs office which was much more inviting and had a better parking lot, this office was tucked away, not visible from the main road. He often wondered how his brain doc decided on this place to establish his practice. He found a spot that was not too crowded, the car next to him had handicap plates as the handicap spots had been filled probably by daybreak. The car was askew in the spot, but not too much, Carl was able to fit his vehicle between the car and the curb. He got out and headed around the building to the main entrance. He would have to take the elevator today as the stairs were being mopped according to the wet floor sign blocking the stairway door. The elevator was slow and would get him to the office on the third floor just in time for his name to be called. It smelled a little like urine, and e was sure when he was done, the custodian would have it blocked off to clean up the accident that must have recently happened. Once the door slipped open to the third floor, he got out with his insurance card in hand and approached the receptionist. She was on the phone with another patient that from what he could tell was giving her all sorts of grief. Without a word he signed in, smiled at the harried receptionist and handed his card and driver’s license to her. “Good morning Carl, I’ll be right with you,” said the nurse, cupping her hand over the receiver. “Take your time, I am still early,” replied Carl. He found a seat near the receptionist station and opened The Paris Review from where he left off at the coffee shop. He suddenly remembered that he left the coffee that Cheryl had made him in the car, by the time he got out of here it was sure to be tepid or worse yet, cold. “Carl, I am ready for you,” said the receptionist. He jumped up and dog eared his spot in the book. He pulled out his credit card as he owed the co-pay. The process was robotic at this point with all f his specialists. He handed the card to her with a smile. “Did you need a receipt,” asked the receptionist? “That would be great, gotta keep all these for tax time right,” replied Carl. “Here you go, the doctor is running a bit late, but he should be ready for you in about fifteen minutes,” said the receptionist. “What are you reading this time,” she asked? “Oh, just last season’s Paris Review, they have a great interview with my favorite writer in this issue,” Carl replied. “You always bring in the best books. I wish I had time to read as much as you do.” “Well when you have as many appointments as I do and wait in as many waiting rooms as I do, you can catch up on a lot of reading.” “I don’t think I want t

WRITING AND PODCASTING A NOVEL 1 NOV 2020 Todays Topic Welcome friend to Create Art Podcast where we create more than we consume. I hope this inspires you to accomplish your goals with your art and if you would like to share what you are doing email me at [email protected] The Story So Far Shared Diary 1 Nov 2020 day count 1942 cumulative count 1942 It was his day off, well not really a day off, he did have a doctor appointment later that morning, so he got up at his usual time and went to the coffee shop. The day had started a bit too bright for his liking, these fall mornings usually threw off his circadian rhythm, so he thought it was later than it was. Rolling over and looking at the clock the piercing red digital numbers read 6:43. He took the whole day off because he wasn’t sure of what he was going to hear from the doc that day, plus he usually didn’t use much leave time since the divorce. The coffee shop was his refuge since his life had fallen apart. It was not too trendy, there were people his age that would come and spend time. Being in his early forties, fewer places were open to him in that he felt like the creepy old guy. Often, he’d attend movies alone, his old friends were married and had their own lives to live, where as his life was forced to begin anew after 15 years of marriage. The dissolution of the marriage was amicable, they had no kids because he was unable to perform in that aspect. She had wanted kids, the house, two cars and the dream. Most of that he was able to provide, but the kid part was beyond his control. It was a similar doctor visit that he attended alone when he received the news of the impending end of his life. It was a fluke that they found the brain tumor that would eventually lead to his status. There was little they could do to help him go into remission and all he wanted to do was work until the very end. She had wanted him to take time off and just be with her. That for him was torture, he was wired differently that she was. He did not want to be mothered and nursed back to health. He wanted to go out quietly without much fanfare. When they could not see eye to eye, they both decided that he needed to see this to the end on his own terms. It was a Tuesday when he went to the coffee shop. There was still some fog in the air as it was not quite 7:30 AM. There were a few patrons in the shop. He stood in line and looked for his favorite spot to be open, an old couch that gave to his weight exactly right, it cuddled him into an hour or two visit each time. Luckily, no one had taken the couch so he would be able to enjoy the day despite the news he was going to receive from the doc. He stood in the line and gave the barista his drink order. “Red eye with an extra shot and an everything bagel please,” he said. “Busy day for you today huh, usually don’t see you in here this early,” replied the barista behind the bar. She worked the early shift most days and, on the weekends, he would come in and order the same drink and food. She was going to the local college in the theatre department and they had talked many times about what she was going to do after she graduated which changed ever few weeks. “Doctor stuff today, took the day off and couldn’t sleep in so I figured I’d come in and read or write. How is the play going,”? He asked as she was taking a playwriting class to finish her required classes this semester. “Having a hard time with the dialogue, my prof says write like you talk, but how exactly do you do that and make it interesting,”? She replied while mindlessly making his red eye. The forced steam started to run in the espresso machine so they needed to talk over the noise. “Well what you could do is record a conversation and then type it out to get the feel for what people talk about. “ “Yeah, people act funny when they are being recorded, I need someone that would be natural even when I record them. Hard to find people that can act natural.” She was finishing his drink and used finger quotes when saying ‘act naturally’. “Well you can record me, although I doubt what I have to say would be interesting for your play,” he replied. “Well if you have time after your doctor stuff, would you be able to come by and I could record you, Tuesdays are pretty light here and we could go toward the back tables where few people go. That way I would not get anyone else on the tape, just us,”? “Yeah I can d

Ep 17Commentary : Gratitude in Art

Today's topic Welcome friend to Create Art Podcast where we create more than we consume. I am Timothy Kimo Brien your thankful head instigator with over 20 years in arts and education helping you tame your inner critic and provide you with commentary, interviews, discussions, and projects that will inspire you to create art. Today's episode is a commentary on Gratitude in Art. The kicker is not only will we be talking about gratitude, but you will see it in action during this episode. Why Gratitude? When we appreciate what we have, it helps our mental state and reminds us of what we have accomplished. Gratitude is a two-step process: looking back and verbalizing what we have accomplished and then making an action plan for what we want to accomplish in the future. Gratitude comes from Latin gratus, loosely translated means pleasing, thankful. Putting Gratitude Into Practice In this episode I want to thank the people who have been on the show and discuss why I appreciate their contributions. Cliff, a listener that has written in to [email protected] who has expressed his gratitude for what he has learned through this podcast Scott Murray from The Crimson Files and Comic Book Noob podcast for his insights on podcasting and audio drama. C.J. Robinson from The Poetry Novelist for his unique approach to podcasting by being open and unpretentious in his review of other poets and writers. Joel Ciaccio for his podcast in hiatus The Hack sessions Podcast. We did double duty in our combined episodes talking about T.S. Elliot, one of our favorite poets. Brandon Larson, my former boss. We talked about talent and management styles, he must be good because he put up with me. Tia Sunshine Dye, we talked about watercolors and her regional showing. She has a wonderful website for her work and has reasonably priced work. York Campbell from Poetic Earthlings podcast. We discussed creativity in a pandemic and how he produces his podcast with excellent production values and challenging topics. Christopher Simms, we discussed his history with poetry and political art. It was a great time to catch up with him and receive a deeper appreciation of his work. Kyle Bondo, has been working with me on our podcast Podwrecked, and has been my podcasting mentor since 2016. We discussed his attempt at NaPoWriMo and how he uses poetry in his IT job. Mathew Passey, not a guest, but another mentor that audited my podcast and website. he provided many insights that help me create this podcast for you. Lessons Learned in Gratitude Gratitude reminds us we are not alone on our artistic journey. There are others who helped us along the way, make sure to reach out to them. The subject of gratitude has been used by others in their art discipline, try it out as subject material if you are stuck on ideas. Doing a project based on gratitude can help improve your mental health and push you through any blocks that you have that are stifling your creativity. Closing Thoghts Use gratitude in your work, it may take you out of a bad space and it will bring your audience closer and provide a more intimate connection. To reach out to me, email [email protected] I would love to hear about your journey and what you are working on. If you would like to be on the show or have me discuss a topic that is giving you trouble write in and lets start that conversation. Email : [email protected] IG : @createartpodcast Twitter: @createartpod Mighty Networks: Create Art Podcast Postscript I will be closing down KDOI Podcasting, my old podcast about creating art, and putting those episodes here. Be on the look out. I have a number of gems that I know you will enjoy.

Ep 13Using Storytelling to Improve your Artistic Practice

Welcome friends to Create Art Podcast, today's topic is Storytelling and how to use it to improve your artistic practice. Being able to tell a story is the kernel of all artistic practices. We want to convey an idea or an image to our audiences and be able to truly reach them and impact their lives. To do this we must be able to tell a good story. Todays episode is broken down like this : Ways to incorporate Storytelling into your art Two Stories by your head instigator Important items that need to be in any story How can we incorporate storytelling into our artistic practice? Use a journal to note the initial inspiration and the journey Interview your favorite artists or teacher ( if alive) and ask about the story behind their creations Study your favorite artist ( if not alive or "unreachable"), see if they have a biography or review interviews they have given where they discuss their works journey and find these elements in their work Try another form of art and tell a story through that new form Join up with a local storytelling group and practice telling stories I recently have been trying StreamYard to tell my stories on FaceBook and Instagram. The first story I am presenting is my first time seeing the movie Rocky. This was inspired by a good podcasting friend of mine Lance Anderson from Verge of The Dude Podcast. The second story was inspired by the local storyteller's meetup that I attend monthly. During Valentine's day in 2020, we met up at a local gallery, took a piece of art that reminded us about a story we had and connected the two in the story. It is by practicing and presenting these stories that we get better at incorporating stories in our work. Good storytelling has elements that need to be in place. Reviewing the article titled "A Refresher on Storytelling 101" by JD Schaum in The Harvard Business Review he reminds us of these elements. Parachute in, don’t preamble Choose first and final words carefully Follow the “Goldilocks” theory of details Focus your delivery on “one person with one thought Consider the power of poetry Use silence for impact and emphasis Know your AIM Thank you for listening to Create Art Podcast. Ep 12Commentary: Self Care and Creativity

Welcome friends to create art podcast. I'm Timothy Kimo, Brian, an artist, podcaster, and teacher with over 20 years of experience in multiple artistic disciplines and I'm here to help you tame your inner critic and spark your creativity to live a more fulfilling life. Here you're going to find conversations, interviews, commentary, and projects that will help you to discover your voice. Today we're talking about self-care and how that can help you overcoming burnout, sparking fresh ideas, and keeping you invested in your chosen interest. Articles discussed in this episode are : Simon Gottschalk To Be More Creative, Embrace the Art of Doing Nothing In a hypermodern society propelled by the twin engines of acceleration and excess, doing nothing is equated with waste, laziness, lack of ambition, boredom, or “down” time. But this betrays a rather instrumental grasp of human existence Thomas Oppong For A More Creative Brain, Take Breaks on Purpose Your brain needs downtime to remain creative and generate its most innovative ideas. A growing body of evidence shows that taking regular breaks from mental tasks improves creativity and that skipping breaks can lead to stress, exhaustion, and creative block. Shane Mehling Creative Breaks, Why You Should Take One Immediately Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to finish something, or trying to start it, that we end up spending a few anguished moments of our day before we get frustrated and then kick the can down the line, the task always on our mind, weighing us down and pretty much keeping a little black cloud over us. Not only do we not finish our project but we also constantly feel bad about ourselves for being so lazy/uncreative/dumb. So maybe it’s time to take a vacation. Strategies discussed: Set time aside to do nothing Turn off phones, computers, tablets any distractions Set up a meditation area Take a walk Use a journal to track your journey Take a hot bath Thank you for listening to Create Art Podcast. My aim is to help you unlock your creative side and inspire you to ward off that internal critic that says no. You can do this by creating more than you consume. This episode is a little different from the previous 6, we have had conversations with some great fellow artists and some commentary on articles that deal with creativity. I recently had a great discussion with Joel Ciaccio from The Hack Sessions Podcast on T.S. Elliot and here you will listen to how I hear the poem. This is a project for me as I have reenvisioned this piece many times in my life as a stage performance, a death metal song and now as an audio project. Take a listen and let me know what you think. I am challenging you to take a piece of work and reenvision it in your own way. Share it with everyone and let's discuss. Ep 22The Fred Rogers Approach to Podcasting

Hello, friends, this is Timothy Kimo Brian hit instigator at Create art Podcast, where I have over 20 years of experience in the art world under various disciplines. And today's episode is a special presentation where I gave at map con Mid Atlantic podcasting conference in 2019. And it deals with the Fred Rogers style podcasting. we're going to break this down into eight topics here for us. Who is Fred Rogers, some of you don't know? It's amazing. The philosophy behind the Fred Rogers style of podcasting We'll have an obligatory audience exercise, which will be interesting for you listening in on this podcast. But I want you to try it out. We'll talk a little bit about fourth wall theater, customer service, fake it till you creating an avatar and changing your vocabulary. So he's got nine rules for talking to children. And I'd like to go over those here with you. “State the idea you wish to express as clearly as possible, and in terms preschoolers can understand.” Example: It is dangerous to play in the street. “Rephrase in a positive manner,” as in It is good to play where it is safe. “Rephrase the idea, bearing in mind that preschoolers cannot yet make subtle distinctions and need to be redirected to authorities they trust.” As in, “Ask your parents where it is safe to play.” “Rephrase your idea to eliminate all elements that could be considered prescriptive, directive, or instructive.” In the example, that’d mean getting rid of “ask”: Your parents will tell you where it is safe to play. “Rephrase any element that suggests certainty.” That’d be “will”: Your parents can tell you where it is safe to play. “Rephrase your idea to eliminate any element that may not apply to all children.” Not all children know their parents, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. “Add a simple motivational idea that gives preschoolers a reason to follow your advice.” Perhaps: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is good to listen to them. “Rephrase your new statement, repeating the first step.” “Good” represents a value judgment, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them. “Rephrase your idea a final time, relating it to some phase of development a preschooler can understand.” Maybe: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them, and listening is an important part of growing. We talked about breaking the 4th wall, breaking the fourth wall, it's a theatrical convention that goes all the way back to the times of Shakespeare. Shakespeare uses it for comedic effect. The naturalist's theater movement, which was in the 1800s, late 1800s used it extensively through all their shows. They were always DIRECT addresses to the audience. Smile at your audience use a mirror to ensure you are smiling Amp up the energy Fake it till you make it Use post-it notes to remind you to smile Create an avatar to look at Update your vocabulary You can reach out to me for more tips by sending me an email at [email protected] look through the website www.createartpodcast.com connect via social media @createartpodcast on both IG and FB groups @createartpod on twitter #audience, #podcast, #podcasting, #podcasts, #listen, #fredrogers, #smile, #4thwall, #create, #creativity, #creating, #gagglepod, #podwrecked, #shakespeare, #avatar, #avatars. #theater, #theatertricks, #theatergames, #kennethbraunaugh

I have been writing poetry since 1988 and have self-published 4 books of poetry and have hosted numerous open mics from Rockford Illinois to Phoenix Az and Richmond Virginia. I have also branched out to music, theater, painting, and podcasting because of my love and devotion to the arts. Joel is also an accomplished Poet and runs a very good IGTV program where he has his viewers submit poetry to him and he reads it on his feed. In this part of the episode, we discuss the hardships TS Elliot faced, how some people view him today through a #metoo lens and how others stand on our shoulders as we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Sit back listen and learn about TS Elliot, let me know what your favorite poem by TS Elliot and lets get the conversation rolling with you. Thank you for listening to Create Art Podcast. Ep 3Creativity at Any Age

Welcome back friends as we talk about creativity at any age. Today we look at 2 articles that discuss current research about when creativity peaks. Both articles use the same research and approach creativity by talking about the difference between experimental and conceptual creativity thought patterns. I will be commenting on articles I find, mainly through the app Flipboard, but also through other sources. https://flipboard.com/ The Ladders article by CW Headly https://www.theladders.com/career-advice/the-age-when-we-become-less-creative-and-the-reason-why Psychology Today article by Suan McQullian https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/cravings/201911/what-age-does-creativity-peak The differences between these two types of creativity are really eye-opening. Is age stopping you from creating? Age is just a number, don't let it stop you, don't let lack of experience stop you, don't let conventional knowledge stop you from making your best work. Here is my attempt at oil painting after the age of 40, let's see what you have. Create more than you consume.
