Alla fine della II Guerra Mondiale la Germania ne uscì molto sconfitta, ma non gli ideali nazisti. Cambiare e ristrutturare la società tedesca era una sfida difficile se non impossibile. E infatti i risultati nell'immediato dopoguerra furono scarsi. In più, la volontà da parte di USA e URSS di sfruttare le risorse umane fra i nazi non facilitò troppo le cose.
