X-Men: Curse of the Man-Thing Review! | Krakin’ Krakoa #183

X-Men: Curse of the Man-Thing is the finale of a three part “Curse of the Man-Thing” miniseries, spanning the worlds of Marvel’s Avengers, Spider-Man, and now X-Men. In “Curse of the Man-Thing” the adopted niece of Hordeculture – remember them? – is magically manipulating the abilities of the Man-Thing so the entire world, and possibly multiverse, always remember that whatever knows fear BURNS AT THE MAN-THING’S Touch! Today I’ll Answer: + What does the Man-Thing have to do with Krakoa and the X-Men? + Who is on Magik’s new X-Men team, the Dark Riders? + What happens to Hordeculture here that might have major ramifications for the Hickman era of X-Men? Writer: Steve Orlando Artist: Andrea Broccardo Colorors: Guru-eFX Throughout the Avengers and Spider-Man first two issues, with a full story broken into 9 chapters, we see plant-like growths effectively disrupting and exploding across the world, with Man-Thing’s fear-burning powers amplified on a worldwide scale. Overall, I enjoyed the story more than expected, not because I don’t like Orlando’s work (I do, a lot!) but because I’m not usually that into much post-Steve Gerber 70’s Man-Thing. Ted Sallis, the original Man-Thing, has his abilities manipulated here by Harrower, again we’ll talk about her connections to Hordeculture here shortly, and throughout the story is visited by a wide array of Marvel heroes inside his “Man-Thing-Scape” (there is no better way to say that, you’ll just have to trust me) such as Captain America, Spider-Man, and Magik. Meanwhile on Krakoa, “The human world burns while Krakoa suffers nothing more than a new hedge piece.” Krakoa is uniquely positioned to manage these plant-based uprisings, so Krakoa is perfectly safe. Magneto, and the Winter Council, are all satisfied to let the world burn, but Storm does the X-Men heroism thing, before we officially have our “heroic duty” X-Men officially protecting the world after the Hellfire Gala announcement, and the new ongoing of a relaunched X-Men from Gerry Duggan and Pepe Larraz. Now as Krakoa is deciding to, once again after King in Black, show up to save the day for humanity, Ted Sallis wrestles with the truth of his turn into the Man-Thing. He tells Captain America the Man-Thing experiments that turned him into Not-Swamp-Thing were meant to replicate the Super-Soldier formula, and reveals as the story progresses that Sallis’ science couldn’t actually crack the formula. Instead he turned to dark magics, bringing our good creepy pal, Belasco, then ruler of Limbo, later to be replaced by Illyana Rasputin into the picture. So Man-Thing made a deal with the devil – of sorts – which, yes, gives the Marvel Universe Man-Thing, but more dramatically unleashed the interdimensional magic that opened a portal in space-time and created the Nexus of All Realities. Ok, this is new, and kind of a big deal! What’s the Nexus of All Realities? Ok, from the Wiki “a cross-dimensional gateway which provides a pathway to any and all possible realities.” Man-Thing’s guardianship, and connection to the Nexus was generally a mystery up to this point. Who are the Dark Riders? Magik Marrow – Throws sharp bones out of her body and is extremely sarcastic w/ a devil may care attitude. For more, I recommend Si Spurrier’s run on X-Force Shark-Girl – Really fun newer character, who – get this – looks like a shark! I liked her character in the Ed Brisson written Old Man Logan believe it or not. Forearm – OG Mutant Liberation Front, and probably the best pun name Rob Liefeld ever gave a character. Intriguingly, also a part of SWORD’s security division. Mammomax – Big strong Elephant bro and former Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Fights Juggernaut in one of the less very bad Chuck Austen written Uncanny X-Men stories! Wolf Cub – Debuted in the never-discussed early aughts Chamber mini written by Brian K. Vaughan. I’ll admit my general knowledge of Wolf Cub is “Not Wolfsbane or Feral,” but the character’s had a decent role in the Yost/kyle New X-Men days, and Young X-Men afterwards. The Original Dark Riders debuted in X-Factor #65 to #69, aka the Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, and Chris Claremont issues where Apocalypse kidnaps baby Nathan Summers and Jean and Scott are forced to give him up to the future to save him from the techno-organic virus. I had read this story for My Marvelous Year podcast like days before writing this video, and I still didn’t remember any of their names, so the Dark Riders weren’t exactly primo Apocalypse horsemen material. The Return of Hordeculture Looking a bit more closely at our antagonist, Harrower has been raised and trained by Hordeculture, the ecoterrorists introduced in Hickman’s X-Men #3, and shown again in Empyre: X-Men, making this Hordeculture’s 3rd appearance. Harrower refers to her “Aunt Augusta,” but is clearly at odds with the groups mandate to protect the biome above all else, wishing they would go further in their stated goals, effectively wiping humanity from the Earth. Think

Nightcrawler’s Religious History & Christianity in X-Men Comics | Krakin’ Krakoa #181

From the unforgettable Dave Cockrum design to the swashbuckling heart of the X-Men in the pages of Chris Claremont and company’s comics, Nightcrawler has long been my favorite mutant. I remain elated by the opening sequence of Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United, and forever lament the character’s general absence in the 90s animated series. As the character develops in comics, Kurt Wagner’s Christianity becomes a more integral part of his story, not quite as integral as say Daredevil’s Catholicism, or even Kamala Khan’s Islamic faith, but certainly notable among the X-Men. Today I’ll Answer: What has Nightcrawler’s religion looked like through comics history? Is there space for Christianity on Krakoa? What does this history tell us about what to expect in 2021’s Way of X and beyond? In the present, Nightcrawler’s role as the religious thinker among Krakoa’s Quiet Council of mutant leaders leads into the new series, Way of X, in which Kurt’s quest for a mutant religion and finding meaning in this new era of mutantkind takes the forefront. I find it interesting to contemplate how Kurt’s Christianity has progressed through the decades, where it’s lead to, and what it means now for the Hickman era of X-Men comics. The first time we really see Nightcrawler’s religion comes during the original Brood Saga, by Chris Claremont and Paul Smith, particularly in Uncanny X-Men #164. Wolverine observes Nightcrawler praying – in Latin no less – and is surprised. It’s a really beautiful moment of developing friendship, as Logan and Kurt briefly examine their diametrically opposed views on finding comfort in religion, with Kurt lamenting how alone Wolverine must feel, and Wolvy saying “I ain’t alone, bub, I got you.” Crawler’s religion resurfaces significantly during the Uncanny X-Men tie-ins with Secret Wars II (an atrocious Marvel event that disgraces the Secret Wars name, but Claremont is one of the original tie-in masters). Secret Wars II focuses on the nigh all powerful Beyonder coming to Earth, and for the X-Men this leads to events like a showdown with Rachel Summers, Phoenix, and the Beyonder unmaking the New Mutant kids basically on a whim. Following a confrontation with the Beyonder, Nightcrawler, then leader of the X-men, literally flees to church to talk to his priest: “I need to talk Michael, or I shall go mad. I fear have beheld the face of God – only to discover that he is a monster.” It’s an interesting conversation because in the Marvel Universe beholding literal gods is very much a possibility! Kurt mentions as much, but notes that in comparison to the Beyonder they are as nothing. The Beyonder’s god-like powers, the absolute omnipotence of them, really makes Kurt question his faith, and in the absence of that faith, he can’t help but sink into utter despair. I find this whole thread fascinating because growing up with religion, there are a lot of parallels and metaphors that make Nightcrawler’s relationship to God relatable. Drawing strength from prayer in moments of strife, resolving oneself to faith in a higher unknowable power for security… I get that. But when you start to work that relatable situation up against the flippin’ Beyonder, the parallels wash right out the door. In my day to day, the closest I’ve come to seeing the face of God is standing next to Patrick Ewing at an airport urinal. Not quite the same. This definitely highlights one of the challenges with traditional religions in our world as carried through to the Marvel Universe: the sheer amount of cosmic and supernatural miracles heroes encounter over decades of storytelling. It makes me think of Daredevil in War of the Realms quite literally transformed into a God, and then returning heavily to his Catholic guilt and roots in the pages of the Chip Zdarsky written Daredevil shortly thereafter. Or of Reed Richards somewhat famously espousing a version of atheism or agnosticism to his children in the Matt Fraction written Fantastic Four, in a world where the Fantastic Four literally traveled to Heaven to bring Ben Grimm back to life in the Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo run. Appropriately, The Beyonder *really* shakes up Nightcrawler. “Thanks to the Beyonder all the things that had meaning for me – that gave my existence purpose – are todt! dead! destroyed! I don’t know who I am anymore Amanda, or even why I am!” This is a recurring theme for me with Nightcrawler, and one of the things I admire most about his character, in that Nightcrawler is a Christian who questions. He’s a character with a tremendously empathetic heart, and a deep curiosity to explore and question the dogma and unwavering rigidity that can accompany the worst examples of religious manifestation. Nightcrawler *doubts*, and given everything he’s experienced, he sho

Krakin’ Krakoa #139: 2020 X-Men Fast Track – 11 Biggest X-Men Stories in Dawn of X!

2020 was the first full year of Jonathan Hickman era X-Men comics, following the summer 2019 House of X / Powers of X status quo reconfiguration, and the launch of the Dawn of X. We started the year early in the formation of Krakoa with Professor X, Magneto, and Apocalypse convening with world leaders in Davos, and we ended the year after the X of Swords event and the transition from the Dawn of X into the new era known as the Reign of X. All in all, 2020 was a consistently interesting year for all things mutant, with some fantastic highs, and unquestionably moments that never lived up to the impossible highs of House / Powers. I’ve covered it all here in my Krakin’ Krakoa series, where I review every X-Men comic the day of release, and cover bigger topics, questions and themes with weekend videos. For those who missed out, are looking to get into X-Men in 2021, or just want a recap of what happened, this video will cover off on what I remember as the most important moments in the X-Men comics of 2020, with some thoughts on their relevance for anticipated or predicted stories in 2021. 11) Mutants Into The Vault Kicking things off with the saga of the X-Men vs the Children of the Vault, since this storyline is upcoming in X-Men #18, scheduled for release February 2021. What’s the Story So Far: In X-Men #1, Jonathan Hickman and Leinil Francis Yu teased the return of the Mike Carey written creation, the technologically evolved Children of the Vault, who believe themselves the rightful inheritors of Earth, and then in 2020’s X-Men #5, the hunt for the Children and their Vault led to an X-Men infiltration scheme involving Laura Kinney (Wolverine), Synch, and Darwin. As I’ve highlighted a bunch, during this plan, Professor X calls the Children of the Vault “the greatest threat to mutantkind.” Now, since this infiltration which we saw as readers in very early 2020, we haven’t heard hide nor hair of these three mutants, or the Vault. To add to the intrigue, we know that time passes differently in the vault, and that spending an hour inside the Vault, might mean days, months, even years in the outside world. So when Laura, Synch, and Darwyn return to the X-Men – assuming all of them do return – they’ll have been gone for a fairly unpredictable amount of years most likely. Where’s It Going: Again, we know from solicits we’ll get a return story in X-Men #18, and Laura and Synch are teased on the what’s to come “Reign of X” teaser promo for the year. 10) Scarlet Witch seeks forgiveness What’s the Story So Far: Since House of X #1, Hickman and company have established a clear priority of Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, as a new bogeyman & one of the forsworn enemies of Krakoa, with her actions during Marvel’s House of M and Decimation, and her subsequent 2015 retcon removing her mutant status, leading to her new X-Men era label as “The Great Pretender.” In 2020, there were two, fairly short but both essential, additions to Scarlet Witch’s place in the mutant narrative. The first came during the first and fourth issues of the Empyre: X-Men miniseries, both written by Jonathan Hickman, where Wanda sets out to atone for her crimes against mutantkind, depowering nearly a million mutants with three words “No More Mutants.” Wanda attempts to use her mystical prowess, and the aid of Doctor Strange, to resurrect the mutants in the leading mutant catastrophe this millennium, the Genosha genocide caused by Cassandra Nova and the Trask sentinels. Despite Strange’s warnings against this approach, Wanda maintains her course, only to see her spell go awry, resurrecting the deceased Genoshan mutants as corrupted zombies, which she and Stephen promptly have to undo (but not before the mutants, the invading Empyre Cotati, and those resurrected zombies) all clash in a very fun miniseries. Most recently, in SWORD #1, Al Ewing and team also introduced the thread that Krakoa’s vilification of Wanda has cosmic alliance implications, since Wanda is now the official mother-in-law of Teddy Altman, aka Hulkling, aka the King of Space and leader of the newly solidified Kree/Skrull empire. This quick sequence was fascinating (like all of SWORD #1), both because it solidifies Wanda as a political inconvenience for the mutant space program, and because the information was delivered to long-time-father, first-time-PEAK visitors, Magneto. Where’s It Going: Unquestionably, mutantkind’s relationship to Wanda Maximoff and her role in Decimation will be discussed in the pages of SWORD (Al Ewing confirmed as much in his most recent AIPT interview). This could be as simple as a reluctant formal pause to the chilly hostilities, or even something more interesting, like fully integrating Wanda as a SWORD liason (while her powerset does actually seem like something that could benefit the program, welcoming the Great Pretender feels pretty unlikely). 9) The World of Storm What’s the Story So Far: In the pages of the Jonathan Hickman written Giant-Size
