NC State Names Former Captain Justin Gainey as New Mens Basketball Coach: A Homecoming for the Wolfpack
NC State athletics director Boo Corrigan has appointed former captain Justin Gainey as the new head coach for the mens basketball team. Gainey, a point guard for the Wolfpack from 1996 to 2000, will take the helm as the twenty-second head coach in program history, signing a five-year deal. He will be introduced on Wednesday at two p.m. at the Lenovo Center, airing live on the ACC Network and streaming on GoPack.com plus ACC Network Extra.
Gainey, who earned four varsity letters and captained the squad his senior year, started one hundred three games, dished out three hundred forty-four assists, and racked up one hundred ninety steals. His nine-steal game against Virginia in 2000 remains a program benchmark.

With twenty years of Division One coaching experience, including fourteen at power conference levels, Gainey spent the last five seasons at Tennessee as associate head coach for Rick Barnes. There, the Vols went one hundred thirty-four and forty-eight, hit the NCAA Tournament every year, grabbed four Sweet Sixteens, three Elite Eights, and two SEC titles. They dominated defensively, leading the nation in spots and developing NBA talent plus All-SEC stars.
