Episode 149: "What's the Point if We Can't Have Fun?" ft. Works in Theory
"The ultimate, hidden truth of the world is that it is something that we make and could just as easily make differently." David Graeber, The Utopia of Rules Dedicated to the memory of David Graeber. Rest in power. Recently, I sat down with Nate and Tom, two of the co-hosts of Works in Theory podcast, to commemorate the passing of David Graeber. Together, we read through my favorite Graeber essay, "What's the Point if We Can't Have Fun?" and discussed everything from anthropocentrism to economics to joy and the jubilee of play. Episode 148: "A Simple Country Lawyer Fighting Fascism and Baking Cookies"
I recently sat down with the folks behind the forthcoming documentary East of Town to talk about immigration, justice, and borders in the Deep South town of Lumpkin, GA. Our sprawling conversation touched on a whole lot--from the depressing constancy of immigration policy in the so-called U.S. to fortress Europe and the global regime of border violence enforced across the planet. Episode 147: "Verdant, Phantasmagoric Futures" ft. Solarpunk Magazine
This week, Justine and Hal join us to discuss the brand new Solarpunk magazine! In this wide-ranging conversation, the three of us define "solarpunk" as both a literary/aesthetic genre, but also as a way-of-life. We pick apart the anti-authoritarian impulse implicit in the name "solarpunk," but also problematize the limitations of aesthetic revolt. Our dialogue touches on the tensions between (post-)humanism and biocentrism, abolishing anthropocentrism, anti-capitalism in solarpunk, queer and liberatory story-telling, and so much more! Production Note: I mention at the top of the episode that this is Ep. 146, but it's actually Ep. 147. Geo and I discuss abolition as presence, connect the history of reconstruction to the present, examine the obstacles presented by the Fraternal Order of Police in order to explore strategies to "break the spinal column of police power," chat about community self-defense, and close with a dialogue about abolition as a central facet of revolutionary social transformation. Episode 144: "May All Your Wandering Lead You Home" ft. Jay Dragon
EI recently sat down with Jay Dragon, lead designer behind Possum Creek Games and developer of the new tabletop roleplaying game, Wanderhome. The two of us proceeded to have quite a lovely conversation that I'm so excited to share with you today. Jay is wonderful and the insight, passion, and heart Jay brought to this dialogue was beautiful to behold. Jay and I talk a lot about the mechanics behind Wanderhome, discuss the "GM agnostic" systems of Wanderhome, get into the weeds of the different philosophies behind game design, discuss the pastoral, gentle adventures of player-characters in the world of Hæth, and speak at length about queerness in the tabletop gaming space. Episode 141: "Fire to the Prisons!" ft. Scott Branson & Jacques de la Haye
EOn this week's edition of Coffee with Comrades, we're doing something a little special. In the first part of Ep. 141, I sat down with Scott Branson to talk about the new English language version of a book they translated for AK Press, The Abolition of Prison, by French revolutionary and prison abolitionist Jacques de la Haye. Scott and I talked about their work translating the new edition, the capaciousness of anarchism and abolition, as well as the cancerous forms of carceral logic that plague the left even to this day. In the second part, I include an English language rendition of a conversation with Jacques de la Haye himself! Then, finally, we close with a French version of that same dialogue. Below are the time stamps for each of the three parts: 6:05 – Interview with Scott Branson 53:32 – English Language Interview with Jacques de la Haye 1:02:21 – French Language Interview with Jacques de la Haye I also want to give a big shout-out to Scott, who translated Jacques' answers and my comrade, Travis, who leant his voice-acting skills to read out Jacques' replies for our English-speaking audience. Episode 140: "All That is Solid Melts into Air" ft. Michael Reagan
EOn today's episode, historian, professor, and author Michael Reagan joins me to discuss his new book, Intersectional Class Struggle, available now through AK Press! Michael and I chat at length about the necessity of intersectionality, the modern dynamics of class struggle, the fetishization and veneration of the "working class" as it exists in the minds of many on the left today, the history and lineage of the Black feminist tradition and how it informed Michael's work, and a whole bunch more. Ep. 138: "All Power to the Imagination" ft. N.O. Bonzo
EI recently caught up with the anarchist street artist, printmaker, and graphic designer NO Bonzo, a Portland-based illustrator who's been working on PM Press's forthcoming Mutual Aid: An Illuminated Factor of Evolution, Pyotr Kropotkin's seminal work on evolution, politics, and economics. The book is absolutely brilliant, you've never seen an edition of Kropotkin's magnum opus like this before. And, yes, Mutual Aid is his best work, not the Bread Book. Fight me, theory nerds. Bonzo and I had an absolutely lovely conversation ranging from me gushing over their work to us discussing art as praxis to the themes and inspirations behind their art to me gushing over their work more. There's a lot of me geeking out over how sick their stuff is. If you've frequented any lefty meme pages on Instagram, you've probably seen Bonzo's work floating around before. If you haven't already acquainted yourself with their aesthetic, you should definitely give it a peep before listening to this episode just because it'll provide a bit more context for our discussion. Episode 137: "They Lynched My Baby"
EOn today's edition of the program, I sat down with my pal John Duffy to discuss the new podcast he's producing, After the Uprising: The Death of Danye Dion Jones. John is a journalist, writer, film-maker, and podcaster, as well as a dear friend and we had a lovely chat over coffee the other morning talking about After the Uprising, a podcast which investigates the tragic death of a young man in Ferguson following the uprising for Black liberation inspired by Mike Brown and one mother's dogged quest to find answers. Episode 136: "The Post-Internet Far-Right"
EToday, we bring you a special collaboration with our Channel Zero Network friends and colleagues, 12 Rules For What!? In this edition of the program, Sam, Alex, and I discuss the current iterations of reactionary politics, unpack the fascist imaginary, discuss ways to cope with the horrors of staring into the abyssal ugliness of far-right politics, and take some time to chat about Alex and Sam's new book, The Post-Internet Far-Right. Episode 135: "Break the Vicious Cycle"
EThis week, I am joined by my lovely friend Kathrin, who hosts a YouTube channel that discusses political science and anthropology through a feminist lens. Kathrin and I spent the hour discussing prisons, police, and abolition. We chatted about the cancer of carceral feminism, the need to address patriarchal and masculinist fantasies of power on the left, the urgency of abolition as an anti-statist position that must be prefigured in the here and now, as well as the ways in which abolition is a presence: a thing we must actively build with our own communities. Episode 134: "Building New Worlds" ft. the Future is a Mixtape
EWe are back, once again, with your weekly dosage of Coffee with Comrades. Joining me this week, once again, for the second half of our special two-part collaboration are Jesse and Matt, co-hosts of the excellent podcast, The Future is a Mixtape. Today, we examine the praxis of anti-anti-utopia, digging into the theory's implications for literature, media, and culture, but also (and, arguably, much more importantly) discussing how anti-anti-utopian fiction galvanizes action and transformation. I had an absolute blast chatting with Jesse and Matt, they are positively delightful. If you haven't already, definitely be sure to check out Ep. 133 of Coffee with Comrades, "Imagining an Alternative: The Theory of Anti-Anti-Utopia," before you listen to this episode. Episode 133: "Imagining an Alternative: The Theory of Anti-Anti-Utopia" ft. The Future is a Mixtape
EThis week, I am pleased to share with you a subject that is very close to my heart (and often on my mind, for that matter.) I recently sat down with Jesse and Matt, co-hosts of the Future is a Mixtape, to discuss the theory and praxis of anti-anti-utopia. Anti-anti-utopia happens to be the subject of my doctoral research and, as such, is something that I have been writing about ad nauseum for the last, oh, I dunno, two and a half years or so? And I've been thinking about it for at least twice as long so, suffice to say, it's something that I'm really passionate about and interested in. But what, exactly, is anti-anti-utopia, anyway? Well, in this first episode of our two-part special collaboration with the Future is a Mixtape, Jesse, Matt, and I lay out the theory of anti-anti-utopia by discussing four main vectors: utopia, dystopia, anti-utopia, and anti-anti-utopia. Stay tuned for next week's episode where we'll move on from discussing the theory of anti-anti-utopia and share a dialogue about anti-anti-utopian praxis. Episode 132: "Mending a Broken World" ft. Cindy Milstein
EWe are back in action, once again, with another episode of Coffee with Comrades. I recently sat down with my friend and comrade, Cindy Milstein, to talk about her new edited anthology, There is Nothing So Whole as a Broken Heart: Mending the World as Jewish Anarchists. Cindy is one of the most gentle, compassionate, and lovely people we've ever had the pleasure of hosting on this show. Cindy and I discussed the compatability of Judaism and anarchism, the synthesis of identity, antifascism and antisemitism, international solidarity against settler colonialism and state oppression, queer and feminist Judaism(s), and the joys of youth and rebellion. Episode 131: "Living Your Life in a State of War" ft. Shane Burley
EWe are back with your weekly helping of Coffee with Comrades and, boy, do we have a show for you! I sat down with my friend and comrade, author and activist Shane Burley, who's new book, Why We Fight, is available now through AK Press! Shane and I discussed a whole host of topics: fascism and the far-right, anti-fascism and militant resistance, and the ongoing apocalyptic times we're all living through. The conversation was lovely. Episode 130: "The Coldest of All Cold Monsters" ft. Eric Laursen
EThis week, author and activist Eric Laursen joins me to discuss his new book, The Operating System: An Anarchist Critique of the Modern State available May 4th, 2021 through AK Press. Eric and I discuss the origins of the modern state, its relative brevity in world history, the ways the State insinuates itself into our lives and perpetuates itself through replicative cycles of colonization, command, and control, and the folly of revolutionaries who believe they can strike down capital without also felling the State. Episode 129: "Another Round of the Chicago 7" ft. Kino Lefter
EThis week, we're bringing your Coffee with Comrades fix a little early. Episode 128: "Red Bandanas & Revolution" ft. Abby Lee Hood
EEpisode 128 of Coffee with Comrades features a conversation with independent journalist Abby Lee Hood. We discuss the storied history of the term "redneck," critiquing liberal elitism and self-righteousness, exploring the labor history of rednecks, and analyzing how these consequential struggles for working class people were coopted by the ruling class and sold back to us in the form of pop country stars and reactionary nationalism. As is often the case in conversations like these, our dialogue bounced around a lot. One of the things we touched on briefly was the Derek Chauvin trial. We recorded this interview before the police killing of Daunte Wright. Obviously, the terrain has shifted a bit since Abby Lee and I's conversation as folks in Minneapolis have been engaged in the struggle for justice against Brooklyn Center PD. All power and solidarity to the folks bravely standing up to the cops in Brooklyn Center, Minneapolis, Chicago, and all across this country as we continue to fight for abolition and justice. Episode 127: "A Violent, Irrepressible Miracle"
EThis week, Michael Pons joins me for a discussion of the hit indie video game, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut. Pons and I explore the game's politics of insincerity, the philosophical existentialism of the game and its universe, the masculinist power fantasies in RPGs, and why endings are so critical to get right in video games. As you might imagine, this discussion is filled with spoilers for the game, so tread lightly. Follow Pons on Twitter. Episode 126: "Permanent, Intolerable Uncertainty" ft. the Left Page
EThis week, I hung out with my pal Frank from the Left Page podcast and talked about Ursula K. Le Guin's novel, The Left Hand of Darkness. In the ensuing dialogue, Frank and I discussed the book's ambisexuality, queer critiques of the text and Le Guin's response, the nature of being and the impermanence of knowledge, how different knowledge bases are gendered and how we dismantle and reinterrogate the chauvinistic approach to science and reclaim a more emancipatory framework for the scientific method. We also talk about spirituality? I dunno, it was a lot and we bounced around quite a bit, but I had a blast and I hope you'll enjoy this episode, too. The Left Hand of Darkness is available online! Episode 124: "Reflections on the Quarantine"
EThis week marks the one year anniversary of the so-called U.S. being placed under lockdown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. One year ago, I was in New York city visiting childhood friends and the comrades in Dumb & Awful. I was literally in the middle of making plans to chill with Amy and Liz from Rebel Steps when the coronavirus was officially declared a national emergency. In the time that's passed, our society has become more isolated and alienated than ever before. Worldwide, millions have died. To this day, the U.S. has continued to absolutely bungle this debacle. To mark this historic year, I wanted to do a retrospective, reflective episode on how COVID-19 has impacted human society and how human beings have become atomized, but also how we've banded together, rose up against white supremacy in this country, and instituted sweeping projects of tenant-organizing and mutual aid when the state left us out to dry. Joining me today is Jules Taylor, a musician, producer, and podcaster living in upstate, NY. Jules and I spend the episode chatting about the emergence of new conspiracies, the way capitalism exacerbated this crisis (fueling and profiting off our ongoing immiseration,) and—most importantly—the ways we've fought back. But it's also a heavy episode, where we leave some space to mourn and grieve and contemplate mortality. Things mentioned by Jules during our conversation: The Slow Cancelling of the Future – Mark Fisher Capitalist Realism by Mark Fisher Cover of the New Yorker Magazine 12.7.20 Women With Cancer Awarded Billions in Baby Powder Suit The fiasco of the 1976 'swine flu affair' The Spanish Flu actually came from Kansas Notes: Check out Jules' podcast, No Easy Answers, and his website: JulesTaylorMusic.com. Episode 123: "No Human Being is Illegal" ft. Harsha Walia
EI recently sat down with Harsha Walia, author of the new book Border & Rule: Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism, to discuss the displacement crisis, the struggle for migrant justice, the resurgence of far-right ethnonationalism across the planet, and the internationalist framework necessary to confront the specific sort of violence conjured by borders. Episode 121: "Awkward Armor" ft. Pynk Spots
EIn this episode of Coffee with Comrades, I am joined by Nic, host of our Channel Zero Network sister-show, Pynk Spots, to chat about managing shyness and introversion in media work, teaching, and community-organizing. This wide-ranging conversation covers it all: prepping for public speaking, decentering yourself at rallies and demonstrations, figuring out how to cope with introversion, mitigating awkward situations, commiserating over embarrassing moments, etc. The fist half of our dialogue covers tips and tricks. The second chunk deals with how to apply these lessons to organizing in your own community, whether you're doing community gardening or engaging in militant direct action. Follow Pynk Spots on Twitter and Instagram and subscribe to their YouTube channel! They're almost to 1000 subscribers. Also make sure to support Pynk Spots on Patreon. Episode 120: "No Poisons, No Prisons" ft. George Schimitz
EThis week, my friend George stopped by to talk about the intersections of straight-edge and radical politics. We talked about being sober, punk and hardcore, and the how revolutionaries might benefit from the clarity and focus of being drug-free. But, fear not--neither of us are here trying to provide some prescriptive dogma. Honestly, it was just fun to catch up and shoot the shit. George also talks a bit about the new Stick to Your Guns EP, The Meaning Remains, which comes out this week so stick around 'til the very end of the episode to hear a bit more about the record. Episode 119: "Google Murray Bookchin" ft. Anark
EAfter we put out our three-part series introducing socialism, communism, and anarchism, I had a flood of folks message me on Twitter or shoot me an email and ask, "What happened to the social ecology episode?" As I've said before, sadly, it got lost to the eldritch gods of audio-editing. Rest assured that we'll do a deep-dive into social ecology at some point in the near future as it's a branch of leftist theory I'm profoundly interested in, but—in the mean time—hopefully this week's episode of the podcast can tide you over. I recently sat down with Daniel Baryon, better known by his YouTube alias, Anark, to discuss possibly the most important text of Murray Bookchin's career, The Ecology of Freedom: The Emergence and Dissolution of Hierarchy. Daniel and I spent some time digging into some of the text's major themes, argued that The Ecology of Freedom is a work as monumental as Marx's Capital, and offer some critiques of the text, as well. Episode 118: "The Coalition for Dan Baker"
On January 15, in Tallahassee, FL, the FBI arrested Daniel Baker, a local leftist, veteran, and a former combat medic with the YPG, on trumped-up charges meant to silence dissent and criminalize community armed defense. FBI agents bullrushed Dan's apartment, guns drawn, broken open the front door, and threw a flash bang grenade before making the arrest. Dan, who has been described by various news outlets as being involved in some insidious "Florida Cspitol plot" and having connections with a "Marxist guerilla organization" has been charged by the federal government, denied bail on the grounds that he's a flight risk, and held in solitary confinement in a segretated housing unit because authorities fear he will "radicalize" other prisoners. Allegations surrounding Dan's arrest stem from flimsy, circumstantial evidence, derived almost entirely from social media posts Dan allegedly made, some fliers Dan allegedly printed off and distributed in the community calling for folks to arm themselves against a possible white supremacist coup, and a few pithy memes he allegedly reposted on the internet. Should Dan be convicted, he could face up to 5 years in prison and over $250,000 in fines. But who is Dan Baker, really? Today, we set the record straight. In this edition of Coffee with Comrades, I am joined by Eric, Dan's friend and former roommate, and our mutual comrade, Jack, to discuss the allegations, the anti-repression work surrounding Dan's case, the DeSantis administration's anti-protest bill, and a whole lot more. I want to preface by saying I think this is an immensely vital case of vindictive, opportunistic repression against the left, the opening salvo of the repression that is sure to come from Biden's neoliberal administration which has made no pretense of being friendly with the left. But this moment can prove instructive to folks interested in doing the hard work of defending their communities from the horrors of white supremacist and fascist violence by understanding how the state will crackdown on those of us who choose to stand up for our neighbors and take proactive measures to ensure our communities can continue to survive in spite of the crises engendered by capitalism and the state. Episode 117: "Militant Joy" ft. Carla Bergman
EHonestly, this is probably one of my Top 5 favorite Coffee with Comrades episodes so you should probably stop reading this description and just listen. No, seriously. You sure? Okay, then. This week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Carla Bergman, one of the authors of Joyful Militancy and co-host of Silver Threads and Grounded Futures, to discuss militant joy. This conversation lead us on a whirlwind of topics. We discussed unschooling, ridiculed rigid radicalism, analyzed Joyful Militancy and The Dispossessed, geeked out over Ursula K. Le Guin's rendition of the Tao Te Ching, talked about Breaking Bad, and generally just shot the shit. Truly, it was a lovely time. Follow Carla on Twitter and Instagram. Episode 105: "No Government? No Problem!"
EThis week, we're wrapping up the third installment of our mini-series on lefty ideologies by closing with what I suspect is the most radical, uncompromising horizon of revolutionary politics: anarchism. As I've said on every single episode of this three part mini-series, don't take my word on what you're about to hear. I'm biased. I am an anarchist because I reckon that anarchy is the most dangerous and powerful idea in all of human history and that it is a material philosophy that has the potential to eradicate unnecessary human suffering and institute full communism for all living beings on this planet. Also, if you think it would be helpful, you can check out the PowerPoints for each of these introductory philosophical episodes. Episode 104: "All is for All"
EIn this week's edition of Coffee with Comrades, we continue our exploration of the three prevailing leftist tendencies with a discussion of the big, scary c-word: communism. I said this last week and, doubtless, I'll say it again next Tuesday, but I wanna provide a quick caveat before we launch into today's edition of the program. A lot of people have a lot of different feelings and perspectives on what "socialism," "communism," and "anarchism" mean. Plenty of folks simply regurgitate whatever they hear on social media—for good or ill. Others actually take the time to read the theory. Some of those folks form their own perspectives and insights, while a good chunk of others just follow a party-line. Don't take my word for things here. This episode series is meant to serve as a very brief introduction to each of these rich, vast, and complex ideological positions. So, take everything I have to say here with a grain of salt, read and explore these theories for yourself, and—most importantly—use these ideas to improve the lives and material conditions of your friends, family, neighbors, and comrades. That said, this discussion of communism did get the stamp-of-approval from one of my Marxist-Leninist comrades so, take that for whatever it's worth. Also, if you think it would be helpful, you can check out the PowerPoints for each of these introductory philosophical episodes. Episode 103: "Socialism, A Broad Introduction"
ESo, a lot of listeners who're new to left politics have asked us in the past to do introductions to the major theoretical and ideological positions on the broad left. The good news is we've done just that! Last year, I sat down with some friends and comrades in the Center for Participant Education to outline, in broad strokes, the differences between socialism, communism, and anarchism. What you'll hear today is the first of those dialogues. This edition of the podcast is all about the economics, politics, and philosophical perspectives of socialism as it is broadly construed. I talk about Marxism, labor, and try to distinguish socialism from communism. Keep in mind, this is all coming from someone who falls pretty firmly into anarchic tendencies, so take everything I have to say with a grain of salt. I encourage you, first and foremost, to investigate different positions on the revolutionary left for yourself and think critically about these ideas so that you can come up with you own convictions and conceptions. Just the same, I hope this mini-series paints each of these distinct philosophies in a fair, clear, and concise light so that you can hopefully begin to understand and distinguish the differences between these complex and complicated philosophies. Also, if you think it would be helpful, you can check out the PowerPoints for each of these introductory philosophical episodes. Episode 102: "The Kids Will Save Themselves"
This week, I am joined by two lovely guests: Soph and Izzy. I wanted to check in with two of the coolest kids I know to get a new perspective on the world. While I obviously think it's valuable to listen to authors and journalists, musicians and community-organizers, or chat with other podcasters, I think it's equally important to elevate the imaginations, passions, and perceptions of younger generations. To get those viewpoints on the program, I sat down with my partner Megan's two kids, Soph and Izzy. In this episode, we chat about raising chickens, climate change, bees and trees and penguins, boring liberal black lives matter protests, homeschooling, COVID-19, and so much more. I think this is definitely a unique episode, so it may not be for everyone, but I found our conversation immensely edifying and I hope you will, too.
