The night of October 24, 1953, was a busy one in La Crosse, Wisconsin as La Crosse State College was celebrating homecoming weekend. Fifteen-year-old Evelyn Hartley had accepted a babysitting job for a local college professor and had just settled down to do some school work when the Rasmussen family had left her in the care of their 20-month-old daughter.
