At least 10 people have died while in custody at the Fulton County Jail since January. On July 13, 2023, the Justice Department launched a civil investigation into the conditions in the Fulton County Jail in Georgia. According to several reports, since July there have been six deaths at the facility since July, including the death of Alexander Hawkins. On Monday “Closer Look” started a series of conversations that investigate the life and death of Hawkins. Rose Scott talks with Fallon McClure, the deputy director for Policy & Advocacy at the ACLU of Georgia, about the crisis happening at the jail and the immediate actions that should be taken to keep inmates safe.
Plus, Kaitlin Goode, a wildlife biologist and the program manager of the Urban Wildlife Program for Georgia DNR Wildlife Resources Division, discusses whether we’re seeing an increase of coyote sightings in residential areas and how to keep your distance if you come in contact with one.
