Two of Norway's most celebrated musicians come together to perform the music of the country's most celebrated composer, Edvard Grieg. Composer Eric Nathan releases the world premiere recording of Missing Words (2014-2021). Performed by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, American Brass Quintet, cellist Parry Karp and pianist Christopher Karp, International Contemporary Ensemble, Neave Trio, and Hub New Music, this 84-minute magnum opus is a six-part series inspired by German words invented by writer Ben Schott in his book Schottenfreude (2013) that describe ineffable experiences of contemporary life. The musical works speak to intimate yet shared experiences that range from the tragic and beautiful to the comic and commonplace. With Missing Words, Nathan finds meaning in the phenomena that add color to everyday life. Schott has contributed a foreword for the album and Robert Kirzinger wrote the liner notes. The libretto arose from Wagner's gradual reconception of the project he had initiated with his libretto Siegfrieds Tod (Siegfried's Death) which was eventually to be incarnated as Götterdämmerung, the final section of the Ring cycle. Having grappled with his text for Siegfrieds Tod, and indeed having undertaken some musical sketches for it during 1851, he realized that it would need a 'preface'. At this point, he conceived that the prefatory opera, Der junge Siegfried, could act as a comic foil to the tragedy of Siegfrieds Tod. Preliminary musical sketches for Der junge Siegfried in 1851 were however quickly abandoned, although Wagner had written to his friend Theodor Uhlig that "the musical phrases are making themselves for these stanzas and periods, without my even having to take pains for them. It's all growing out of the ground as if it were wild." Shortly afterward he wrote to Uhlig that he was now planning to tell the Siegfried story in the form of "three dramas, plus a prologue in three acts"—a clear prefiguring of the Ring cycle. 2022 Grammy Winner for Best Orchestral Performance Florence Beatrice Price (née Smith; April 9, 1887 – June 3, 1953) was an African-American classical composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher, born in Little Rock, Arkansas, educated at the New England Conservatory of Music, who was active in Chicago from 1927 until her death in 1953. Price is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Price composed over 300 works: four symphonies, four concertos, as well as choral works, plus art songs, and music for chamber and solo instruments. A London Symphony is the second symphony composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The work is sometimes referred to as Symphony No. 2, though the composer did not designate that name for the work. First performed in 1914, the original score of this four-movement symphony was lost and subsequently reconstructed. More than the other Ring dramas, Die Walküre has achieved some popularity as a stand-alone work and continues to be performed independently from its role in the tetralogy.The story of Die Walküre is based on the Norse mythology told in the Volsunga Saga and the Poetic Edda. In this version, the Volsung twins Sieglinde and Siegmund, separated in childhood, meet and fall in love. This union angers the gods who demand that Siegmund must die. Sieglinde and the couple's unborn child are saved by the defiant actions of Wotan's daughter, the title character, Valkyrie Brünnhilde, who as a result faces the gods' retribution. Jake Heggie is an American composer of opera, vocal, orchestral, and chamber music. He is best known for his operas and art songs as well as for his collaborations with internationally renowned performers and writers.Heggie's 2016 operatic adaptation of the 1946 film It's a Wonderful Life was commissioned by Houston Grand Opera with a libretto by Gene Scheer. Based on Philip Van Doren Stern's story "The Greatest Gift" and made famous by the 1946 Frank Capra film, the opera follows the journey of George Bailey, a troubled banker about to end his own life on Christmas Eve only to be saved when his guardian angel helps him realize how many lives he has touched. Tracklisting I. St. Mark's Square: This jubilant 6/8 movement is in the style of the great Venetian master, Vivaldi. It expresses the mood of the great gathering center of the island. II. Bridge of Sighs: This slow movement is evoking the walk across the Bridge of Sighs. The bridge was the last place a prisoner would see daylight before going to the dungeons. The slow steady rhythm of the guitar are the steps of the prisoner where the strings are the sound of the heaviness of their heart. III: Carnival: This rhythmic conclusion of the piece is capturing the spirit of this festive occasion on the isle with a dissonant middle section reflecting some of the darker characters portrayed at this time. Bio: To date, Mr. Brown has released over 25 CDs either under his own name, his metal band Age of Fire, or various projects. He has performed in Europe, across the United States, and Canada. Brown is a member of the Guitar Foundation of America, the Charlottesville Classical Guitar Society, the College Music Society, Chamber Music America, and the Society of Composers, Inc. He taught guitar at Mary Baldwin College from 2004-2006, other private institutions for 10 years, and is currently teaching privately in his hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, where he resides. He is a graduate of the Music, Video, and Business program at The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and has a Bachelor’s in Business from City University in Bellevue, Washington with a specialty in Music Industry. Currently, he is attending the Vermont College of Fine Arts working towards his Master’s Degree in Music Composition. His music has been heard on radio stations across the world, TV, Film, and Video Games and has even been transcribed into Braille. La fanciulla del West (The Girl of the West) is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini, based on the 1905 play The Girl of the Golden West by the American author David Belasco. Fanciulla followed Madama Butterfly, which was also based on a Belasco play. The opera has fewer of the show-stopping highlights that characterize Puccini's other works but is admired for its impressive orchestration and for a score that is more melodically integrated than is typical of his previous work. Fanciulla displays influences from composers Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss, without being in any way imitative. Similarities between the libretto and the work of Richard Wagner have also been found, though some attribute this more to the original plot of the play, and have asserted that the opera remains quintessentially Italian. Iphigénie en Tauride is a 1779 opera by Christoph Willibald Gluck in four acts. It was his fifth opera for the French stage. The libretto was written by Nicolas-François Guillard.With Iphigénie, Gluck took his operatic reform to its logical conclusion. Pianist Jacob Greenberg today releases his first solo disc, Bright Codes, on TUNDRA via New Focus Recordings. The Barber of Seville, or The Useless Precaution is an opera buffa in two acts by Gioachino Rossini with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The libretto was based on Pierre Beaumarchais's French comedy Le Barbier de Séville (1775).
