A major decision is looming on what’s being described as the largest water infrastructure project in the history of the State — the €6 billion Water Supply Project for the Eastern and Midlands Region. The plan would see a 170-kilometre pipeline carry water from the Parteen Basin on the River Shannon to Dublin and beyond, with extraction levels of up to 330 million litres per day. Supporters say it’s essential to secure the capital’s long-term water supply. Critics in East Clare warn it could have devastating environmental and tourism consequences, and Clare County Council is preparing a submission to An Coimisiún Pleanála ahead of its decision. Alan spoke with Gary Gibson, Senior Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann to discuss the project. Photo © Ranslynn Designs from Ranslynn Designs via Canva
