"Unsettled," documenting LGBTQ refugees' stories, makes public TV debut
The San Francisco Bay Area has a reputation for being a kind of “queer promised land,” says filmmaker Tom Shepard. In the documentary “Unsettled,” that notion is put to the test. The film follows four LGBT refugees as they try to build new lives in San Francisco after fleeing violence and discrimination in their home countries. “Unsettled,” released last year, will be broadcast on public television this Sunday, June 28 at 7 p.m. Pacific time, and will also be streaming from June 29 to July 13 on PBS.org. Tom Shepard and Subhi Nahas, an LGBTQ and refugee rights activist and gay Syrian refugee who appears in the film, talked with “Civic” about recent changes to immigration policy the unique struggles of LGBTQ refugees.
