Why We Need to Talk about the Imagination Center

After years of planning and community input, the future of the $18.6 million, 16,000-square-foot “Imagination Center” at Reindahl Park is in limbo. Host Bianca Martin spoke with Madison about why the center is so desperately needed and what this process has shown about the city’s priorities. You can listen to City Cast Madison’s past conversations with Madison Common Council President Yannette Figueroa Cole and Madison’s Finance Director Dave Schmiedicke about the budget for more insight on the city’s budget woes. The Capitol’s Newest Statue is a Historic First

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020, protestors in Madison gathered day after day at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Amid calls for more diverse representation at the Capitol, a statue of Hans Christian Heg was torn down and tossed in the lake. And then, an idea was born: Wisconsin should create a statue memorializing civil rights pioneer Vel Phillips. She was the first woman judge in the state and first African American woman elected to statewide office, among many other firsts. Now that statue is a reality. We spoke with Vel’s son, Michael Phillips, about his mother’s legacy and the importance of the new piece. Wanna talk to us about an episode? Is Madison a Walking, Biking, or Driving City?

Madison is consistently ranked as one of the nation’s top cities for bicyclists and pedestrians. Defining the Flavors of Madison

There’s a cookbook out that showcases the ingredients and flavors of Madison. And we’re gonna stop ya right there, it is WAY more than brats and cheese curds. It features recipes from the farmers, chefs and shoppers who frequent the Dane County Farmers’ Market, one of the oldest and largest in the country. With recipes for curtido to panzanella to ratatouille, and gorgeous photos of the food and the people behind them, it’s a celebration of all who call Madison home. Terese Allen has several upcoming events including one on Sunday, June 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Warner Park Community Center called “Madison’s Iconic Food Cultures.” And in nearby Baraboo, Allen will be doing a book signing and recipe samples on June 30 at 10 a.m at Bekah Kate’s shop during Baraboo’s monthly Sunday Market. Your City Budget Questions Answered

Understanding Madison’s city budget can feel like a real head scratcher. How can the city have a surplus this year, but be talking about a deficit for next year? If the city has had a budget deficit for the past 14 years, why is this the year the Common Council is considering a referendum to increase property taxes? And most of all, how can a city that is undergoing such an economic boom be struggling to balance the books? Host Bianca Martin took all those questions and more to the man behind the city’s money, Madison’s Finance Director Dave Schmiedicke. You can listen to City Cast Madison’s conversation from last week with Madison Common Council President Yannette Figueroa Cole about the budget.
