This year marked a decade since the nation’s largest mass school closure. In 2013, 50 Chicago schools were closed for good, sending shockwaves through the city’s Black and brown neighborhoods. As we look back on big stories from 2023, we’re revisiting this conversation from June with Eve Ewing, author of “Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago’s South Side.”
