07/04/21- Harrisonburg Campus: The Measure of Generosity- Pastor Adrian Mills

http://bible.com/events/48725380 The Measure of Generosity What is the measure of generosity? So what is the measure of generosity? Before Jesus came to earth, most people thought they knew how to accurately measure generosity. But Jesus showed us the new standard. He changed the measurement. Your method of measurement matters. Luke 6:27-36NIV 27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. If someone has to love you for you to love them, if you have to like someone in order to love them, if someone has to agree with you in order for you to love them, you are using the wrong standard of measurement.-The principle of the day was one of reciprocity. This principle says one must give in equal measure to what one has received. This was the measurement. But now Jesus introduces a radical new standard.-The call of the disciple is to a greater love, a distinct love, a love that is unique in the world. This is THE new measure of love. A new definition. A new standard. The new standard of generosity! Our standard is: “What is fair?” God’s standard is: “What is merciful?” (Luke 6:36)Add your private notes...• • •We don’t get to be the ones who decide who deserves to be loved. Luke 6:37-38NIV 37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Jesus is saying ‘Be careful of the standard you use with others. That’s the standard I will use with you’.“ For the measure you use, it will be measured to you”

07/04/21-East Rock Campus: What Now? Part 4: We’re United- Jared Link

What now? Part 4 What now? Part 4 We're united What Now? We're united ‭‭John‬ ‭17:20-23‬‬ “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:1-3‬‬ As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Be completely humble Be completely gentle Matthew 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Be patient, bearing with on another in love. "Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you have in your mind." David G. Allen “Bearing with one another means fully accepting them in their uniqueness, including their weakness, and faults, and allowing them worth and space” Andrew T. Lincoln. ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:3‬‬ Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. So what now? We're united ‭‭James‬ ‭3:16‬‬ For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. “There is enough of the flesh in every one of us to wreck any local church and any other work of God” -William MacDonald

06/27/21- East Rock Campus: What Now? Part 3: We Get to Work- Jared Link

What now? Part 3 What now? Part 3 We get to work What Now? We get to work ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:10‬‬ For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. For we are God's handiwork... You are God's workmanship, His idea! ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:4-6‬‬ But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:7‬‬ in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:8-9‬‬ For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's handiwork... Speaking of what it means to be God's handiwork author Rick Renner says: "it emphatically means that on the day you got saved, God put forth His most powerful and creative effort to make you new. Once God was finished making you new, you became a masterpiece, skillfully and artfully created in Christ Jesus. There's nothing cheap about you at all! God's creative, artistic, intelligent genius went into your making." We are created in Christ Jesus... Chapter 2 begins with the walking dead and concludes that we have been created in Christ! What a glorious transformation! To do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do... ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:16‬‬ In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. ‭‭John‬ ‭15:5‬‬ “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. What now? We get to work!

06/20/21- Harrisonburg Campus: Student Sunday: When Obedience Gets Tricky- Pastor Olivia Michael

Student Sunday When obedience gets tricky. The biggest mistake you can make is believing that your obedience is insignificant. Matthew 14:22-32NIV 22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.  23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,  24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.  25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.  26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.  27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”  28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”  29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”  31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”  32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  1. Obedience is messy Peter didn't have an obedience problem; he had a distraction problem.  2. We can sink or cry out 3. Jesus will respond Matthew 14:31NIV 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

What Now? Part: 2 The Heart of it All ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:1-3‬‬ As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. ‭‭John‬ ‭5:24‬‬ “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. "The walking dead" …You were dead in your transgressions and sins ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:4-9‬‬ But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. What now? Live Jesus Focused! ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:19-22‬‬ Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

06/13/21-Harrisonburg Campus: One Way- Pastor Kevin Griffin

http://bible.com/events/48714714 One Way "Who do you say that I am?" John 20:31NIV 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. "I am the bread of life" (John 6:22)"I am the light of the world" (John 8:12)"I am the door of the sheep" (John 10:1-18)"I am the good shepherd" (John 10:1-18)"I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:17)"I am the way, the truth, the life" (John 14:6)"I am the true vine" (John 15:1-6) John 13:19-21NIV 19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.” 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.” John 14:1-10NIV 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God ; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Do you know Him? Do you want to know Him?

06/13/21- East Rock Campus: What Now? Part 1: Introduction- Jared Link

Ephesians 3:10-11 His (God’s) intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Acts 19:8-20 8 Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. 9 But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord. 11 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. 13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. 17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.[c] 20 In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

06/06/21-Harrisonburg Campus: Regret Prevention Part 3: I Would Have Given More Generously- Pastor Adrian Mills

http://bible.com/events/48709308 Regret Prevention Part 3: I Would Have Given More Generously It doesn’t matter how much you accomplished or how much you accumulated. One day the game will end and it will all go back in the box. We are focusing on avoiding future regrets by focusing on two of the most common regrets people report as they near the end of life:-Last week: I would have loved more deeply.-This week: I would have given more generously. Acts 2:44-47NIV 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. From the very beginning, followers of Jesus were characterized by radical generosity. Luke 21:1-4NIV 1 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” God’s economy, generosity is much more about the WHY than the WHAT.-The truth is, our stuff has the power to imprison us.-The widow's gift is one of deep love, devotion, and total trust. In this moment, she is demonstrating freedom. How do we practice this radical generosity both individually and within community?-We give-We serve What would it look like today for each one of us to ask God this question: "How can I be more generous?"

We are focusing on avoiding one of the most common regrets people report as they near the end of life: I would have loved more deeply.-We are exploring the importance of love as the guiding focus of life – loving God and loving people.-You’ll find that love is the great antidote to regret. Matthew 22:34-40NIV 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Greek word for love: agapaō – means to love dearly, to welcome unconditionally. Point 1: We don’t know how dearly we are loved. “If you want to know God and if you want the world to know him, you will have to saturate in this love. It may seem uncomfortably selfish at times to bathe in the love of God so thoroughly and personally, but it’s the only way you can become the vessel of love he is creating you to be. You will be able to love others only to the extent that you experience his love for yourself. You will forgive other only to the extent that you have experienced forgiveness yourself. You will bless others only to the extent you have understood blessings in your own life. Your capacity to love depends entirely on your capacity to receive it. It will shape your life more than any other force.” -Chris Tiegreen Point 2: We make love about our feelings but really love is defined by our actions. 1 Corinthians 13:3-8NIV 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 1 Corinthians 13:13NIV 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. 05/23/21- Harrisonburg Campus: Regret Prevention Part 1: An Introduction to Regret- Pastor Adrian Mills-

http://bible.com/events/48701354 Regret Prevention Part 1: An Introduction to Regret “Life always plays in a forward direction; it never goes backward.” John Ortberg • • • So what do I do with my regret? • • • Matthew 26:31-35NIV 31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “ ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” 33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.” 34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” 35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same. • • • -Peter’s story is one of the most profound stories of regret in all the Bible. -Great regret is often preceded by great expectation: “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” • • • Luke 22:54-62NIV 54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.” 57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said. 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”“Man, I am not!” Peter replied. 59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” 60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly. • • • -This series is about living in such a way that we AVOID regret. 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”“ Man, I am not!” Peter replied. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.  4 Even though I walkthrough the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. • • • If Psalm 23 asks a question it may be “Who will care for me?” • • • Provision for our flourishing (verse 2-3) Phillip Keller writes in his book “A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23” “sheep do not lie down easily and will not unless four conditions are met. If flies or parasites trouble them, they will not lie down. Finally, if sheep are anxious about food or hungry, they will not lie down. Rest comes because the shepherd has dealt with fear, friction, flies, and famine.” • • • Protection in our peril (verse 4-5) • • • Confidence for the future (verse 6) Romans 8:38-39 NIV For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.   “a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” “spirit of despair” -That Hebrew term for spirit is “rûaḥ” and gives the sense of something having descended on us in torment. -As opposed to mourning, which is event-driven, the “spirit of despair” tends to “move in” and stay with a person in the form of fear, anxiety, chronic sadness.     “garment of praise” -The Hebrew word here is like something wrapped around us. God Himself puts it on us to wear throughout our day. -Our God wants to give you praise even in your despair.       Praise is God’s antidote for despair.   Psalms 40:1-3NIV 1 I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth ,a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him. Psalms 103:1-5NIV 1 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalms 42:11NIV 11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalms 119:164NIV 164 Seven times a day I praise you for your righteous laws. When we praise God, there is renewal happening: -renewal of our focus: praise takes the focus off of us, and puts it back on the Lord. -renewal of our mind: the voice of despair is hopeless and overwhelming, but when we praise we are actually allowing our thoughts to be reformatted. -renewal of our time: what if praise was so important that we plan our day around it?       Shannon’s Story Experience a real life story of God’s renewal in Shannon’s life, even in the midst of despair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3Qbxyw7CNQ

http://bible.com/events/48673711 Beauty for Ashes, Part 1: Life for Death Easter is really about a trade. And the truth is, God makes terrible trades. What’s the worst thing about your life right now? Sickness, despair, hopelessness, loneliness, heartbreak? God will trade you for it. That’s what Easter is all about. Isaiah 61:1-1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,because the Lord has anointed meto proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim freedom for the captivesand release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favorand the day of vengeance of our God,to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beautyinstead of ashes, the oil of joyinstead of mourning, and a garment of praiseinstead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness,a planting of the Lordfor the display of his splendor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”     -Jesus intentionally points to Isaiah 61 at the very beginning of his ministry. Jesus used this passage to summarize his mission here on earth. -You might call Isaiah 61:3, “Three Bad Trades and a Consequence”: -We trade our ashes and He gives us beauty. -We trade our mourning and He gives us joy. -We trade our despair and He gives us praise. -We trade our broken and feeble roots and He makes us oaks. Beauty for Ashes -Ashes were sign of destruction, despair, and mourning. -Many of us know “ashes” quite well. There are many synonyms – hopelessness, brokenness, hurt, and emptiness. -But those are just cousins to the worst of the ashes – DEATH. -Today on Resurrection Day we can be very specific about what “beauty for ashes” means: life for death. Ephesians 2:1-5 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.     You were dead (Ephesians 2:1-3) -Sin festers, it corrodes, it deteriorates and destroys. It brings death today, and eternal death. Now you are alive (Ephesians 2:4-5) -If you are in Christ, He exchanges your death and gives you new life.
