Pastoral Chat: Self-deprecating behavior, often intended to elevate others by putting oneself down, can actually signal a perceived sense of privilege and come off as disrespectful. This dynamic appears in various settings—gender, ethnic, and professional—where those with perceived power try to appear smaller rather than engaging as equals. True respect comes from meeting others on equal footing, not through false humility or artificial elevation. Like athletes who want to compete at the same standard, people want to be treated as equals, and both giving and receiving self-deprecation should be thoughtfully addressed.
