Ep 191191 Free Form Christian Meditation on John 18:37-39
Bible verses for Meditation: KJV 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. 39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? Get into a place where you can sit comfortably and uninterrupted for about 20 minutes. You should hopefully not be driving or anything tensing or unrelaxing. If you feel comfortable to do so, I invite you to close your eyes. Guided Relaxation / Guided Meditation: Breathe and direct your thoughts to contacting God. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate, deflate. Bible verses for Meditation: KJV 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. NIV 37 "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." 38 "What is truth?" retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?" Meditation on Scripture: I have loved this passage of scripture for a long time. As we remember and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ this scripture puts it into focus. His birth had a purpose. The light came into the world and the world did not receive it. Something that we can ask ourselves this season is an amended version of what Pilate asked. Instead of trying to figure out if Jesus is a king. We should try and figure out if he is THE king, more specifically, is he YOUR king. This can be a heavy yet deeply meaningful question. Do we live in such a way that shows that Jesus is our king? If we claim to trust and believe Him but then don't follow him he isn't much of a king. Regardless of how we interpret the role of the spirit in our purification one thing is clear from scripture, Jesus wants us to follow him. It is not enough to philosophically be comfortable with God's truth. We need to embody it. You can almost here the futility in Pilates words when he questions what is truth. He tries to free Jesus in some vague way but when it comes down to it, he does not accept Jesus as HIS king. Another thing that strikes me about this scripture is the certainty that Jesus had about his own purpose. As he was being falsely accused he firmly understood that that current hardship was part of his purpose. This passage inspires me to seek resolution of purpose. I have a deep desire to know what God would want for my life. In the meantime we take the best action we can or the best action we are motivated to. During this time of celebration I ask that you spend some time with God in prayer and meditation. Wrestle with the question, is Jesus your King, and if so how could you show that? It is my belief that as we make the best efforts we are capable of in our fallen state, that God's grace moves in us and can fill us with purpose to carry us through. I encourage you to seek from God to know how to more purposefully live your life. In the absence of any hard answer take the 2 great commandments as your guide. Love God, and love your neighbor. By love we dedicate ourselves to service to God and our fellow humans. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Meditation of God and His Glory / Hesychasm: I invite you to sit in silence feeling being patient for your own faults and trials. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Updates: Final Question: Do you live your life purposefully with Jesus as your King? Final Thought: I deeply hope that during this season that you will find deeper devotion to the relationships that are most important. My greatest hope for you is that you draw nearer to God both in good times and in bad. Both in busy times and lonely ones. In times of mourning and times of celebration. In times of light and while walking through the dark. Remember that Jesus

Meditation on Scripture: As our lives become increasingly complex we can feel worn and defensive. I have heard numerous commercials about the need for people to get themselves Christmas presents. By no means do I want to suggest that buying things we need is misguided, I think the increasingly prevalent mindset of thinking of ourselves as the most deserving recipients of our own gifts is. In my experience the more we think about how we gain from a situation, the less effective we are at doing what is most important, to give our love and help to those who need it. I will use a recent example. As many of you know I was at the Navy Chaplain school recently. I was there for a little less than 2 months. During that time I was stretched physically and organizationally. It was hard work but I made a decision early on to make every effort to make meaningful friendships with everyone I could and to treat them with the Love of God above all else. I gave up all goals of advancing my personal reputation in their eyes but instead focused on being supportive and caring. At the end of the class I was voted by my classmates for the student leadership award because of this. I dont share this as a humble brag but because I have spent many hours trying to wrestle with this. It was a complete surprise to me. I removed recognition from my goals. I attempted to give others what they most need, love. During this Christmas season I want you to consider how you can give of what is most meaningful in your heart. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Final Thought: As we reflect on the purpose of Christmas we are reminded that we are truly celebrating light coming into the world. We celebrate the example of love offered by Jesus. Resist getting emotionally caught up in the expectations of this time of year and just enjoy those around you, even as you encounter their flaws up close nad personal. When this life is over and we are dead, none of the things we buy, give, and receive will make any difference. The thing that will make a difference is how we learned to relate to each other in love. As you take these deep breaths, let go of the fear of loving others. Let go of the apathy that holds you back from caring for others. Think in your mind how you can bless the lives of the humans who happen to be sharing the earth with you this day. Let us all join together in a spirit of loving companionship as we bless the poor with physical blessin

Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" Meditation on Scripture: With such a great season of rejoicing and celebration our memories are created with great strength. Many times these memories are good, other times they are not. Between the months of November and December people connect tragic events to this season for the better part of 20 percent of the year. This may be from death or any other type of separation. As Christians our goal should be to remember the Christmas season as an opportunity to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The tender scene at the manger is so meaningful because of who that baby was and what he would do. Many people I have met have lost people around the holidays. Their loss is felt more intently at this time of year. As an example, when I worked in the ICU in the hospital I attended to the families of 4 patients who were removed from life support. I am keenly aware that Thanksgiving will be forever changed for those families. My heart goes out to people who have lost someone during the Christmas season, including some who have written me messages. In this same moment we reflect on the words of Jesus. He is the resurrection and the life. We can trust and rely on the word of God. We shall live again with Him. Any loss we currently experience will not be forever. According to the sovereignty and mercy of God we can trust that our common faith will reunite us. We can trust in the mercy of God. Despite this I don't feel that our normal human feelings should be anything to fear. Earlier in this same passage, Jesus himself wept over the death of Lazarus even though he knew he was going to raise him. All things combine for the good of those who love God. As we follow the example of Jesus Christ we can emulate the way He loved and trusted in the Father. May we continually prepare our hearts this Christmas season to rejoice in the glory of God while dealing with our human feelings. God loves us and loves every person we have known. Even death cannot separate us from His love. . Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. NRSV 1 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. Meditation on Scripture: As humans we feel like we need to understand the world. We feel out of control if we dont understand things. This feeling has challenged many people to the point were they question wether God is all knowing or all powerful. Although I think this is a natural place to move through in our development of faith, I have seen people get stuck on this question. This scripture is so meaningful because it talks about justification connected to but not identical to the development of our character. I think this gives insight into the questions of purpose of suffering. I was listening to an interview with Dr. James Gordon on the Being well Podcast. He spoke about how he works with people who grow through their trauma. One girl, who witnessed her family killed in a war learned a deep lesson of compassion for her own suffering. As we learn to endure our character become stronger and enhances our hope in redemption through Jesus Christ if we remain open to God's spirit as our character grows. Each of us have our own challenges. There are seasons of life filled with challenges and other seasons less so. But the fact that remains is that we are challenged. I invite you to let go of your demand that suffering must make sense in the immediate future. Allow it to be an enigmatic question that God is working to enhance and change eternal character. God is good and full of love. For this reason he offers us the ability to grow in hope this way. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. ESV 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Meditation on Scripture: The message of Thanksgiving I feel today is represented in a quote from "I stand all amazed" by Charles Gabriel I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me, Confused at the grace that so fully he proffers me. I tremble to know that for me he was crucified, That for me, a sinner, he suffered, he bled and died. I marvel that he would descend from his throne divine To rescue a soul so rebellious and proud as mine, That he should extend his great love unto such as I, Sufficient to own, to redeem, and to justify. I think of his hands pierced and bleeding to pay the debt! Such mercy, such love and devotion can I forget? No, no, I will praise and adore at the mercy seat, Until at the glorified throne I kneel at his feet. The above verses of Hebrews teach how Jesus was the replacement for the temple sacrifice. He is also a replacement for the sacrifice of our souls also. Let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God for His marvelous mercy and grace. Take this moment and give thanks to God. Perhaps we can even be more thoughtful and be grateful for those loved ones that surround us. None of this compares to the greatest blessing of all that we have receive. That is the grace of God. In the greatest of eternal ironies God loves us fallen creatures. He loves you. Thanks be to God for that love. People came to him and objected, "Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" 19 Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day Meditation on Scripture: Fasting is an ancient tradition. It is used the world over and has a deep tradition in Christianity. When Jesus was baptized he engaged in 40 day fast afterward. This is known as the temptation of Jesus. He suffered hunger and was tempted by Satan to give in to his body of flesh. He knew the appetites of the flesh. Many of the sins that we fall into in our lives are motivated by our human physical appetites. I think this is why fasting can be such a powerful spiritual tool. It helps us set aside even legitimate cravings for food as we learn to trust in the strength of the Lord. If done with moderation, fasting can be a powerful way of brining our creature desires into perspective. I think God has asked people to fast for spiritual benefits. There are also health benefits to fasting that modern science is still catching up to understand but these are side effects not the main motivation. One thing that is clear from scripture is that fasting is very often coupled together in scripture with prayer. When we fast it should be as an act of religious devotion, not as a diet strategy. We can begin with prayer, pray throughout, and end with prayer. In the great cosmos of God's creations the clump of atoms that we put into our mouths does not change much. God is not impacted by us not eating, but we are. Our devotion can be focused inside ourselves as we become willing to give up our human desires. This month we celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States and we are preparing to celebrate Christmas next month. As we eat from abundance may we also recognize that our human physical desires do not have to dictate what we eat. We can learn to discipline ourselves as we rejoice in the goodness of God to us. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Final Thought: As you begin to celebrate abundance may you also consider those who do not experience such abundance. One practice we can get into is to use fasting as a way to increase our offerings. As we fast we can symbolically dedicate that food to the poor as well. In other words we can provide an offering of cash equal to what we would have eaten in the meals we skip during our fast. In this way we can bless others while also engaging in a powerful spiritual discipline. I suggest you engage wisdom and prudence as you consider your fasting practice also. Exerting our extreme will in either extreme of indulgence or deprivation can distract us from our goals of submitting our will to God. Ep 178178 Love One Another as I Have Loved You A Christian Meditation Podcast on John 13:33-35
178 Love One Another as I have Loved You A Guided Christian Meditation on John 13:33-35 I'm Chaplain Jared and I work as a hospice chaplain and an ICU chaplain, my purpose in making this podcast is to help you find more peace in your life and to be more open for your heart to be changed by the Spirit of God. By using centuries old form of Christian Meditation named Lectio Divina: Outline: Relaxation, Reading, Meditation, Prayer, Contemplation and Visualization. Bible verses for Meditation: KJV 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another NIV 33 "My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. 34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." Meditation on Scripture: How do you do at loving others? This is the greatest question we can ask. I ask myself this question often. I fail. I try really hard to bot be angry at others when I am treated badly. I dont always succeed. When others are kind it makes it much easier. The reason why this is so important is because this is the greatest mandate we have. Of all the commands Jesus gave the greatest of all was love. It seems like this is a great thought when we hear it church. When we go into our lives we sometimes don't apply that message. We get some idealized version of a person in out mind but tjay annoying person from school isn't included. The person we don't get along with at the office somehow doesn't count. Once we identify this tendency in ourself the question is how do we deal with this? For cases that are more intense such as abuse it is important to involve trusted helpers such as a pastor or counselor. When we fall short of what Jesus asks of us we can pile on the shame or we can realize that what God truly wants is that make things right and learn to love. In this moment focus on releasing anger from your heart. Let hate go from your heart. Let the love of God into your heart. As you ponder those you struggle to love breathe slowly and deeply. Ponder on how to bring the love of God into their life. Breath in calm and peace. Breath out anger and hate. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Updates: Final Question: Can you let go of hate? Final Thought: the mandate of God to learn to love is central to life. If you struggle with this it means you are human. The more we can learn to love the more we are learning from Jesus. The more we are learning to be like Jesus. As you go through your day make note of who bothers you the most. When you have an opportunity to pour your heart out to God, ask Him to help you learn how to love that person. Practice some meditation and release the tension of anger and hate. As we learn to overcome that we will be closer to the image of Christ which we seek. If you have been harmed or abused by someone this guidance is not meant to diminish the very real and understandable struggle you suffer with. Find someone to walk with you on this process. Love helps our hearts which is why Jesus asks is to do it. 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." 25 The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. 26 He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs." 27 "Yes it is, Lord," she said. "Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." 28 Then Jesus said to her, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed at that moment. NRSV 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us." 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." 26 He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." 27 She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." 28 Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed instantly. Meditation on Scripture: Few things are as delicate, yet resilient, as human pride. In this passage there is an interesting and somewhat confusing exchange that goes on between Jesus and this Canaanite woman. She was an outsider, someone who was not of the people chosen by God. In the account of this story that remains with us we do not understand everything about the situation. Many people spend a lot of effort and time trying to explain away Jesus' response in these verses, yet as they remain, people interpret them differently. Anyone who has written enough emails, or text messages knows the danger of miscommunication. Many times what is received is much different than what is intended. Sometimes we interpret malice where none was meant. Yet when this happens we rarely see ourselves in the wrong. Yet here this woman is begging Jesus for help and he provides her with a response that could have easily been interpreted as scorn or hate. She chose to look past that for the saving power she was duplicating. How many of us have been harmed by someone at church? How many have heard some word from a pastor or fellow believer and had our church participation affected based on offended pride. In an age when there is so much offense given and taken we can seek to know God's desire for us. We can overcome our human feelings that drive us away from God and from each other in church. When we are called dogs or the equivalent we can keep our focus on what is truly important, the saving power of Jesus to help us overcome sin and death. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Updates: Final Question: Why do you take offense? Final Thought: Earlier today I was with a chaplain friend of mine and we encountered someone who was wearing a clothing item with a particularly provocative and inappropriate message on it. Somehow in the small talk it came us and the person was somewhat apologetic about it. His response was "Its OK I happen to be a sinner." When others try and give offense, or do it on accident we can take the mindset that this all works together for our good and helps us appreciate the saving power of Jesus. Bible verses for Meditation: KJV 6 Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. 7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: 8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us. Meditation on Scripture: Jesus' command to love is deep. It should rock our core continually. If you love me keep my commandments. The two most important included loving God and loving each other. Many times in the work that I do I see people in their worst moment in the hospital or similar context. Often I feel a deep and emotional connection, yet at the end of the day I drive home to my loving family. As I have struggled with some troubling cases I have to let them go to the care of God. The context does not allow for continued support. The problem is that this can become our default position. If there is someone sick we wish them well, pray for them, and maybe even drop food off to them if we are ambitious. But do we really share our souls? I have found the most success in helping relationships when I give up all pretense of expertise and expert status. When I drop the search for the "right" answer and just make my soul bare in the middle of their struggle. Our goal should not be to feel good about ourselves or to seek praise for serving others but to connect at our core. As we share the gospel of Jesus Christ do we share ourselves or do we share a version of the story we have created for ourselves or that someone else gave us? As we attempt to be in communion with God and others do we share ourselves or do we curate the image we present them? Do we hide behind the perfection we aspire to? The reality is that among all churches, work environments, schools, homes, there are profoundly broken people. You and I are not above that either. We all desperately need each other's help. If you are not connected with a community of people where you can truly share yourself along with the gospel, keep searching. As Paul says, love blossoms into a desire to be real about who we are, while at the same time, trying to be a better version of ourselves. I trust that God's desire for us is to learn how to use His help and His spirit to do this. Can you increase that circle? Final Thought: When I read this scripture I was both inspired and convicted. You may have heard in the past that I experience the world from an introverted lens. I have always been a very private person. I feel a tension between being comfortable in my shell and putting my deepest thoughts out into the internet. Over the last couple years of doing this podcast I have seen very directly how this message has blessed people. While I am humbled by this, I also feel it is time to rise to greater transparency. Paul's comments here show me that my love has been inspiring me, in wisdom, to share more about myself. This is my intention with the podcast going forward. May God bless me with the courage to do this more. FIND ME ON: Website - ChristianMeditationPodcast.com Android App Store: Recenter with Christ Voicemail - (602)

Meditation on Scripture: At the risk of being too inwardly focused I am pondering today this scripture in my own context. The day this comes out I will be on an airplane going to the Chaplaincy School for the Navy. I have spent many years in preparation for this opportunity and I feel is is something God has been calling me to. I am in the process of getting all my uniforms altered for my new designator as a chaplain. I am quite literally taking on the cross on my uniforms. I have been thinking about this in a more practical way that I have in the past yet there is little difference from the cross of Jesus that I have been asked to take up for decades in the past. Many times when I talk to people who are not in the ministry they speak of this work with a tone of mystery. In a way are we not all called to serve God and be His ministers in the various capacities in our own lives? When I was teaching physics was God expecting less of me? When I was working in other fields did God not expect me to love Him and others? What about you? Do you see your role in life as a minister of the Lord Jesus Christ? Perhaps not as a preacher, or pastor of a congregation, but the path God has you on is no less important. You can bring peace and joy into people's lives around you and your own. There are many members in the body of Christ and they all have different functions, yet they are all important. If we think we get to operate at a lower standard because we are in industry then we misinterpret what Jesus is calling us to do. God loves us just how we are and he wants the best for us. For this reason he will always help us improve and overcome the sins that we fall into. On top of that he will help to mold us closer to His image as we draw near to Him. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him. Final Thought: Taking on the cross of Jesus is not without problems. Those who were closest to the Savior found there to be real challenges to this. It will not always be easy to learn to Love as He did. There are times when those who we most want to help will respond in ways that make it hard, yet this is the life we are called to. God's strength accompanies His commands. When he asks us to follow Him, we can do it because we will be strengthened by Him. Meditation on Scripture: The word here translated as false prophets is psuedopropheton. Pseudo is an imitation or deceptive version of something and propheton is for prophet, "a person gifted at expositing divine truth." Rightly so, I think most discussions of this scripture deals with guarding against false leaders; however, when I think back the bad theology I am exposed to, it is much more likely to come from conversation with someone not a formal church leader of any organization. I have been thinking a lot about this because I think it is a delicate subject. Perhaps it is not accidental that Chapter 7 of Mathew also includes a warning that we will be judged as we judge. For this reason, my main goal is to help us be thoughtful about how we receive truths of God not to disparage people who share things that may not be consistent with what I believe, even if their intentions are not the best. In statements like this Jesus is clearly asking us to be mindful of what we receive from others to help us stay spiritual safe. We can learn to be critical of ideas we let into our hearts and evaluate them based on their effect. Do they yield good fruit? Do they draw us nearer to Jesus? On the flip side, people can have a great effect without having true theology. I can directly tie the creation of this podcast to someone from a non Christian religion. If it wasn't for him I never would have discovered the rich tradition of Christian Meditation. I have had countless people reach out to me to tell me how they feel much closer to Jesus when they listen to this podcast. People have literally told me they have become Christians and accepted the way of Jesus, or returned to it, due to this podcast. This was all based on a seed that was planted by someone who does not recognize Jesus as the only way back to the Father. I consider the friendship of this man to be dear to me and, although we differ on how to understand God, I feel I have come to have a better relationship with Jesus because of him. By your fruits you will know them. I am a better Christain for having known Him, which I consider a good fruit. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. When Samuel went to sleep in his place, 10 the Lord came and stood there, calling out as before: Samuel, Samuel! Samuel answered, "Speak, for your servant is listening." 11 The Lord said to Samuel: I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears it ring. ESV 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8 And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant hears." 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, "Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. Meditation on Scripture: The context of this scripture is helpful. Eli was a man of God and devoted to his service. Samuel had been entrusted to his care as a young boy, as an offering to God. While Samuel was young one night and the voice of the Lord came to him in the night. He thought it was Eli and so he woke him up and Eli said to go back to bed. On the third time Eli finally realized that the Lord was speaking to Samuel. Samuel responded with the refrain: "Speak Lord for your servant is listening." Interestingly enough the message that Samuel received was about the pending consequences for Eli for not living up to what he should have. This Many times I deal with people who struggle to accept the current reality they face. When they talk to their nurse and doctor they hear only what they want to and miss what the true message is. I feel that we do this with God too. Sometimes we ask him questions about life. We seek direction. We seek to know the will of God. Then we listen really hard for what we want to hear or we listen for God to answer in the way that we want instead of trying to discern his will. He communicates His will differently to each of us. Even the prophets of old received messages from God differently. Ezekiel would make dramatic metaphorical demonstrations to show Gods will. Isaiah proclaimed it as the will of God. Revelations is full of deep symbolism that modern believers and scholars continue to wrestle with. Our Savior spoke in parables. God can speak to us through the scriptures and also through life circumstances. God has a message for you. We can listen patiently for the will of God and then obey as best we can. Be patient with yourself and God as you attempt to discern His will for you. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. I looked for pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. Meditation on Scripture: Do you like to have other people pity you? In my experience most people would answer no to this question. The idea of someone gloating over your sadness is too hard to deal with; however, this demonstrates a cheap form of pity. The actual definition of the world pity has to do with a feeling of compassion. Yet somehow in our language pity has taken on negative baggage and unintended meaning. I imagine two different situations. You are experiencing something challenging and someone responds with pity. They feel sorry for you but you have no feeling that they understand you or even that they are listening or care and it frustrates you. Now in a second situation you are going through something difficult and someone responds to your hurt with genuine kindness and compassion. They let you tell them about it or not, depending on what you may need in that moment. After ten minutes in either of these two situations it is likely that the pity without compassion would make things worse, and the compassion would likely make you feel better. The truth is, all of us would like to feel understood and accepted. Psalm 69 is considered a Messianic Psalm in Christianity. In other words it is foretelling aspects of the ministry and life of Jesus, the Messiah. This scripture was quoted in multiple places in the New Testament. Early Christians saw this whole Psalm in the context of Jesus. Here the Psalmist, who also refers to Jesus, shares their sadness that there is nobody to give them pity and comfort them. Jesus would have welcomed pity at the cross. So perhaps what we really want is compassion, love, and acceptance, and what we don 't want is judgement, selfishness, and condescension. Im my work with those who suffer, pity, in the true sense of the meaning, is actually something that most people desperately crave. It is the thing that I have spent the most time refining and correcting in my own tendency. Avoiding patronizing or minimizing language as I share suffering with people through pity, or compassion if you prefer. So as we look to follow the example of the cross here as Jesus was mocked and offered vinegar. When Jesus perceived that the face of the Father was turned from him, he just wanted pity. He wanted someone to show him compassion. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. ESV 7 "Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and recline at table'? 8 Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink'? 9 Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'" Meditation on Scripture: Many times in this podcast I have talked about the amazing love that God has for us. For you. At times many people struggle with accepting that love and feeling it deeply. For that reason it is valuable to reflect on that. It is important that we are able to believe God when he tells us that. Equally valuable is that we realize that our position is one of grace. The love God extends to us is due to His decision to love us. His decision to do what is not required or necessary. We find ourselves in the middle. We realize that God's forgiveness and the offer to allow us to live with Him comes from His heart while at the same time that in His eyes we are worth it. It can be tempting when we hear outpourings of His love so often that we may lose the feeling of newness with it. At times the wonder that fills our hearts when we first hear of it may fade or worse we may think that it is a nice thing for others but not for us. In the deepest way this scripture speaks to those people who struggle with this idea. If God loves us because we are really so perfectly lovable then God's grace doesn't amount to much. If God only loves perfect people or people who are good enough, why is the central message of Jesus that of forgiveness and grace. Why does Paul teach over and over of the need for forgiveness? God's grace can allow us to make peace with our inner nature. We are worse than servants in the grand cosmos. These physical bodies were created from the dust of the earth and will go back to it as it says in Genesis. This doesn't mean that we don't ever do anything that God asks. Jesus uses this metaphor because the servant is asked to do many things and is expected to do them. In this way we are God's servants. Yet when we follow, he blesses us. The things we do never truly earn the payment we receive from God. As we reflect on this I pray that your heart is filled with gratitude instead of shame or guilt. The point of scriptures like this is not to make us feel bad but to help us recognize the love of God. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Updates: Final Question: In what ways are you a servant of God. Final Thought: In an indirect way God's statement that we are His servants represents a commission from God to serve. It is our duty. We can own that identity. We are servants of God yet we struggle to do what he asks us to do and we are unworthy if we expect to earn what we have not earned. The marvel is that God's love, grace, and forgiveness are extended to us who trust Jesus and follow Him. You are a child of God and if you follow the path Jesus has laid out for us then we will truly be blessed in spirit.

Meditation on Scripture: How do you respond to challenges? When you feel failure staring in you in the face what do you do? As you think about the things you have to do or the things you fear many times we want to burry our head in the sand until God fixes it. Or even better we want to sit in blissful silence until then. The challenge of this mindset is that it is not the only manifestation of God. In this scripture Jehovah is referred to as a lion. He is known as the lion of Judah. Many other scriptures show God as a mighty warrior who will destroy our enemies and be our literal savior. Jesus rebuked the evil spirits that he encountered. There was incredibly violence and force in the creation of the earth. God's work is not devoid of ferocity. I propose there is a different option to trying to relax away our stress and fear. We can embrace the strength of the Lion of Judah. In your heart at this very moment God resides. The same God who is referred to as a lion is in your heart. Yet he is not advocating for us to do violence to each other but to overcome fear. In May I had reached the end of an 8 year journey where I was actively working to become a US military chaplain. I had poured myself into this goal. I had dedicated thousands of hours in training and preparation and it all came down to a face to face interview with a room full of senior officers and chaplains. I flew to Washington DC and was sitting inside the pentagon which was just as intimidating as its sounds. As I sat in the hallway I realized that I could not force myself to be calm in that moment. So I decided to retell myself the story that I was not fearful but excited. In this moment my relationship to the anticipation changed. I was not calm but I was also not afraid. I felt the twinge of anticipatory excitement and that made a huge difference for me and I felt completely different about it. The next time you feel fear, recognize that the God of heaven is not afraid to stand mightily in your heart. Part of our walk with God is learning how to live with the Lion. When God comes again the greatest joy is how we will experience the Lamb of God laying down with the Lion of Judah and we will realize that there is no contradiction in this. Take strength in knowing that the same God who created the universe in an explosive miracle can lead you to overcome fear. Jesus said that if we have faith then we can move mountain

KJV 11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? Meditation on Scripture: When we turn to God it is often in desperation. Something happens to remind us of our need of Him. Sometimes we realize a distance between Him and us and we may with to bridge it. As we find ourselves in this state of deep spiritual need we often reach out to God for guidance and comfort. We may even approach Him with faith asking for him to do some grand gesture for us to make sure we know when He answers us. Elijah was a prophet of God in the Old Testament, long before the birth of Jesus. He was serving the Lord faithfully and had commanded incredible miracles to be done. One of which involved the fire of heaven coming down to consume the enemies of the prophet. This did not go over well with the earthly government and they were trying to kill Him. He escaped into a cave in the mountains as he prayed. He was seeking the guidance and blessing of God. He wanted an answer regarding what he was to do. As someone who had seen the fire from heaven, he knew God could be mighty and command the elements. Finally he received an answer "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by" There was a catastrophic set of things that happened, yet this was not God's answer. What his answer was came in the form of a gentle whispering. I think this is an important thing that we can encourage and foster inside of ourselves. I anticipate that this is the most frequent way in which we receive guidance from God. A gentle prick of our conscience, a gentle warmth of having our faith corroborated. As you seek God and His answers for your life remember this lesson. You don't have to wait until you receive some profound sign or test of your faith. You can allow it to steadily and constantly grow by increased intimacy. We need to practice listening to this small whisper of the Spirit for there are the beginnings of the mysteries of God. Meditation on Scripture: In preparing for this week's message I am absolutely certain that this is the message I need to cover today. Because this is what you need. God has been very clear about this one. I think you understand. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross "The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of those depths." Each one of us sees ourselves as somewhat of an expert on our own suffering. Not how to get out of it, or how to fully understand it, or even exactly what we feel at any given time. Yet somehow we feel we understand how bad our suffering is. The truth is all we possibly understand is one perspective at one given time. That is all we can ever have. This is even more clear as we look at the whole world. Of the other 7 billion people on earth at this moment we understand what they are going through even less. We don't understand our own feelings most of the time, much less the feelings of others. We don't understand why we perceive things so bad. The thing that I am reflecting on today is how we could possibly be useful to each other during suffering. If we don't fully understand our own emotions, how could we possibly be helpful to others? The reason is because suffering does conform to reason. Our perception of suffering does not have anything to do with objective facts. What we really want is for life to make sense. We want unending goodness for ourselves and those we care about, our whole lives long. Yet God has a different plan. It's not like He is being hypocritical about it either. When Jesus came he did not come to live as a detached royal in a large palace. He came to life as one of the people and to suffer and die. He was betrayed, he was hated, he was tortured, and the only thing He ever did to deserve it was to do miracles and to speak truth to those who needed repentance. Even his Apostles did not understand the purpose of His suffering until it was hindsight. Our life contains suffering, not because a life without suffering could not have been manufactured by God, but because this is the plan he laid out. Just as Jesus' disciples, most of the time we won't understand the purpose of our suffering until it is over and then some. I promise you this. No hardship will be wasted if it draws us nearer to God and helps us develop. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. 156 The Kindness of God Leads to Repentance A Guided Christian Meditation on Romans 2:1-4 I'm Chaplain Jared and I work as a hospice chaplain and an ICU chaplain, my purpose in making this podcast is to help you find more peace in your life and to be more open for your heart to be changed by the Spirit of God. By using centuries old form of Christian Meditation named Lectio Divina: Outline: Relaxation, Reading, Meditation, Prayer, Contemplation and Visualization. Bible verses for Meditation: Romans 2:1-4 ESV 2 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 2 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3 Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? KJV 2 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. 2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. 3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? 4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? Meditation on Scripture: When the scriptures talk of Grace it is active. The grace of God causes us to act and to return to Him. Sometimes we hope that we can passively sit and watch God do the miracle in our lives. We are so interested to destroy the pride of the law that we can become too passive to realize the commands he gives us to love and to follow. What do we do when we make an error? Do we sit and wait for God to fix it? What do you feel when you hear God tell you to not judge? We need to learn to love the truth and virtue of God and embrace it with every heartbeat while also loving those who fail to live it with ridiculous abandon. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. NABRE 9 And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him. 10 Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" 11 She replied, "No one, sir." Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, [and] from now on do not sin any more." Meditation on Scripture: How do you do at following what God has asked you to do? How do you treat those who you see failing to live as you think is right? How do you treat those who are successful at hiding their sins from you? This scripture is so powerful to me. The Law of Moses was given by God. It is the same Jehovah who gave Moses the law is the same one standing in Judgement of the woman. The woman who was brought before Jesus had been caught performing a sexually impure act. The law had a stated punishment for this offense. It was death by stoning. These people brought a trap for Jesus. If he excused the woman he would be speaking against the law. If he consented to her death he would miss a most valuable teaching opportunity and this woman could not learn from her sin. He told them that whoever is without sin should cast the first stone. The people perceived their own guilt and retreated without having cast stones at her. She must have been terrified and traumatized by some a horrible prospect to die in such a painful and gruesome way. What is worse is that she knew she had sinned. Jesus' command reflects the essence of His love. He didn't say it was OK. He didn't say "Oh don't worry about it." He found a middle way. He stressed the importance of purity while also teaching mercy. Summarize what insights you have gained during this meditation and meditate and visualize positive change in your life: This is a listener funded podcast at patreon.com/christianmeditationpodcast Updates: Final Question: What is a sin that you need to give up in your life? Final Thought: There are times when we need to give this kind of Mercy and probably more likely that we need to receive this kind of mercy from the hand of God. He does not tell us to go on our merry way. He tells us to sin no more as we receive his forgiveness. When he healed a lame man by the waters he told him to stop sinning or something worse than paralysis would happen. Jesus forgives us while he also fortifies us to reject sin in the future. Jesus' love in your life changes you. It changes me. It makes us better than we were before. It purifies us. It changes our heart and our decisions. This is the essence of his Grace. Meditation on Scripture: Tonight on a run I was listening to a book about consciousness. The book talked about some physical markers of different mental states. There is a region of the brain of the brain called the default mode network. This is the area of the brain that is active when the mind wanders. It is inactive when we place our focus on mentally rigorous tasks. Although brain science is far from complete, more information is available now than ever. This area of the brain processes information about ourselves and our identity. It is where we make sense of the separations and differences between ourselves and others. It is active when we ruminate and rehash old problems in our lives also. This region correlates to OCD, Depression, PTSD and other problems that involve worry and rumination. This region of our brain is connected to how we process and understand who we are and what our place is in the world. Some have called this the ego. This is part of our mind that creates narratives and simplifies our experience into an understandable whole. It is interesting to note that this is not necessarily a good or bad thing. For example this area show decreased functioning in people with Alzheimers and other types of dementia where people's concept self begins to slowly dissolve. If we had no activity in our default mode network our consciousness would be a meaningless. Children h We could not exert faith and it would be difficult to serve others if we had no concept of how others were different beings from ourselves. With that said if we have an overactive default mode network we can become obsessed about details in our lives, traumas, problems, negative self evaluations. All of this can lead to increased suffering. Also our maturation process is characterized by development of this area of our brain also. In other words Children have lower functioning of this default mode network. It is interesting to note that Meditation connects different parts of our brain. Just as the default mode network lessens in activity other areas of the brain connect. God's design of our brain leads us to respond to the calming effects of slowing down and letting go of our desire. This scripture says we should be willing to lose our life. Not just in the sense of faith in God but in a real way we should balance our own self concept. If we find our story telling brain to be hyper active we can calm it with meditation so we can experience the real unity we have with God and with each other. It is interested that in the very next verse Jesus correlates our acceptance in the world with His. He shows in a tangible way how our being is connected to Him. Also just as children have under developed default mode networks, Jesus tells us to be like little Children. It is important to make time in our lives for meditation where we let the racing, judging, controlling parts of our mind spin down and we sit with the quiet and calm parts. I pray that in this meditation that you feel that peace loosen how rigidly you attach yourself to the stories you tell yourself about yourself. That you become willing to let that version of yourself die and you accept the new creature God has made from you. One guided by love and by union with Him. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient

ESV 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him Meditation on Scripture: What rules in your heart right now? How does that change throughout the day? Throughout the weeks, months and years? This scripture directly continues from the previous verses about forgiveness and about having compassion guild our lives. As we forgive, as we grow compassion in us, we lean let the peace of God rule our hearts. But it is more than this. I think there is a reason why we are asked to let this happen. The word choice certainly indicates choice and decision which is the greek root translated as "let". Here Paul is inviting the people to let God rule their hearts. Paul is trying to teach the people something that God wants for us. It seems God wants to transform us into a being that chooses what He would choose. The multiple times when he told his Apostles, and us by proxy, to follow Him was an invitation for us to change. Are you willing to change? Will you let him rule your heart right now? Through this meditation and all the others my goal has been to allow God's word to speak directly to you through an experience of peace, allowing us all to be more sensitive to God's word. Here we are being asked to allow this word to dwell in us. As we learn to live more with God's word dwelling in our heart, we will act and speak more like Jesus. We have our very nature transformed. God's decision to give us this ability to chose him as ruler is not a sign of strength but of supreme power and confidence that we could and would chose him, with the help of the Holy Spirit. As we live this way then we will truly do what we do in his name. It is hard to imagine how we can make intentionally bad choices in His name. It seems wrong to consider that we cut someone off in traffic in the name of Jesus or are envious of someone in His name. Although redemption those also can point to His name. This scripture includes gratitude as a guiding principle. I believe it is because gratitude is intimately connected to Christ ruling in our heart. Bible verses for Meditation: Collosians 3:12-14 KJV 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness ESV 12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Meditation on Scripture: In the circles I work in I hear discussion of compassion as being the cutting edge of cognitive research. Compassion has an amazing outcomes in better health and peace for those who practice it. I find this highly ironic since compassion has been a central aspect of so many ancient religions. Implicit in the discovery of compassion is that it is new or that it has not been vital for thousands of years. As though, now that it is discovered by the intellect of modern science it is valid. Compassion is and has always been the core of Christianity. If we cannot practice and understand compassion, what do we truly understand about God? Our aim should be to live compassionately as Jesus did and as He taught. How humbling it is to be called the chosen or elect of God. What have we done to be chosen? We were touched by the favor of a loving God who created a plan whereby we could overcome the effects and natural consequences of our sins. Our propensity for sin is not what impressed God to elect us but His goodness and knowledge that we can become far more with His help. On the positive side now, Compassion is the core of the greatest commandments that Jesus taught. Loving Him and Loving each other. Love binds everything together. Love binds the universe and binds our hearts to God's. Spend a moment to embrace his love. Now spend a moment to consider the phrase forgive as he forgave. Meditation on Scripture: This weekend I had a chance to go on a camping trip with my Son's scout troop. He is special needs and he the best son in the world. On the drive up we talked about life. He told me about some of his worries about the future. This was my favorite part of the whole trip. I love that he trusted me enough to tell me how he felt. Many people I have talked to over the years have had similar worries about the future. In fact, fear is a huge part of anxiety which plagues so many people. I find this scripture to be interesting and special because it does two things at once. It pronounces words which could cause fear but then directly defuses them. It says that destruction will come upon those who are not prepared. Many people fear this kind of fire and brimstone idea but Paul immediately comforts us against that fear. If you are listening to this and you accept and follow Jesus, then you are a child of God, a child of light. Your struggle is not against the full weight of your lack of preparation to enter into the presence of God. You struggle is to trust God and receive the change he is willing to put into your life. You are children of Light, not children of darkness. When you are looking back on this life and this moment in a million years from now during the infinity of eternity you will see yourself enveloped by the love of Jesus going through the same struggles you have now but you will see how it ends up. Many times when I counsel with people and they arrive at a place of peace, I ask them what they would say to themselves as a child. Inside of yourself you have the same child you once were. What you would you say to yourself if you could go back? My hope is that you can get to a place where you could say something along the lines of "Everything is going to be OK in the end." When the infinite future arrives, I suspect that this is the message that we would want to send back to ourselves now. It is the message that God has been whispering to you for a long time now. He wrote it in many forms in the scriptures for us. You are a child of God. Jesus loves you and me that he would lay down his life for us because he KNEW, that in the end everything would be OK. He also knows you well enough that you can trust Him by telling him exactly how you feel today. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Bible verses for Meditation: Job 2:7-10 ESV 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes. 9 Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die." 10 But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips. NRSV 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord, and inflicted loathsome sores on Job from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 Job took a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and sat among the ashes. 9 Then his wife said to him, "Do you still persist in your integrity? Curse God, and die." 10 But he said to her, "You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips. Meditation on Scripture: In last weeks scripture it stated that God does not tempt people. Here Job argues that we should be willing to receive both good and evil from God. I enjoy the nuance in understanding that this contrast provides. Many people speak of the patients of Job as though he did not complain or question what God allowed. I believe that these verses represent the true purpose of Job's story. When everyone he knew questioned his life and choices he maintained his integrity. Each one of us go through our own challenges in life which are a struggle for us. At times we may even feel as though we have failed against them. I have something to tell you. You have survived everything you have gone through. Regardless of our success or failure against our challenges we live on. We have been assured that through Jesus Christ we will overcome this world. All our struggles will be turned to victory. When you feel the weight of the pressure of the world heaped upon you, remember this. We can receive both the good times and the bad with the understanding that we can overcome with His help. There is nothing in heaven or hell that can stop us when Christ is with us. No matter what you fears tell you, you will survive. You will overcome. You will be able to develop more internal skills and resources also. God's goal does not appear to drag us into heaven as though we were being dragged by our hair. It seems more likely that he gives us goals, choices, and even commandments so that we can get up after we have been dragged for a while and learn to walk by His side. When we enter heaven with His grace it will be because he has created a new being in us with this work. God is doing this to you even today. You will survive and overcome. Final Thought: When people write in to me through the podcast so many of them tell me about their struggles with fear, anxiety, and depression. Regardless of your own struggles you are not alone. You are not the only person who struggles, even while hearing messages of God's grace. I want you to know something. You were created by the most glorious being in the universe. You are His child and He calls you His friend. You are worth Him dying for you. My greatest prayer for you is that you, not only find a moment of calm in these moments of meditation but that you also come to more fully understand God's love for you and how that love can move in us to change us. His love motivates us to love others and to follow the words He gave us in the scriptures. We don't need to worry abou
Ep 143143 A Free Form Christian Meditation on James 1:13-15
NABRE 13 No one experiencing temptation should say, "I am being tempted by God"; for God is not subject to temptation to evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 Rather, each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire conceives and brings forth sin, and when sin reaches maturity it gives birth to death. Bible verses for Meditation: James 1:13-15 NRSV 13 No one, when tempted, should s ay, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one. 14 But one is tempted by one's own desire, being lured and enticed by it; 15 then, when that desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and that sin, when it is fully grown, gives birth to death. Our thoughts are the basis of action. Though they often begin very small they grow into worldviews as well as actions and habits. A few years ago I was in the Navy. I had a chance to go aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (which is an enormous 95,000 ton displacement air craft carrier. as an educational ride along. I landed on the flight deck while it was out to sea and had roughly 5 thousand people aboard. I was able to go all over and so I visited the bridge. I was allowed to take the helm (with the conning officer and helmsman standing over my shoulder) I held the relatively small steering wheel. The helmsman showed me the screen of the course we were on and the margin that I was allowed to stay within along that course. I thought it would be easy to stay within the allowable margin of the course of the ship at the time. It was not. With wind and underwater currents the wheel had to be constantly turned back and forth. Several times the ship rushed out of the acceptable margin. I have reflected on the irony of this many times. This floating city was controlled by a steering wheel that was about the size of my car steering wheel. When I finally gave the wheel back over to the helmsman I was physically tired from the focus and nerves of trying to maintain the course of that enormous ship. I came to appreciate the automated systems and the helmsman who normally were engaged to keep the ship on course. This is an analogy for us. Our thoughts and our desires are such small things, yet these things can drive us to violate the word of God and sin. Our self-discipline is the small steering wheel upon which our eternal course is managed. The most powerful being in the universe has given us control of the helm of our lives. He does not tempt us but he allows us to work against it. He allows us to struggle against our desire. He knows that we will not be able to do this. His mercy and grace allow us to overcome when we fall outside of the margins of His word. How do you manage your desire? When you feel desire, even for good things, how do you respond to it? I believe that God gives us this right and ability to help us develop and grow. As we learn to trust him and have faith in Him our relationship with Him grows stronger as we realize how much we need him. Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Final Thought: In Christian history many people have gone to extremes regarding desire. In many situations our human desire causes untold amounts of hardship for us. When we learn to yield our desire and realize that it is part of our fallen nature, we don't need to suffer so much. We can let the yearning of our desire pass by as we do not give in to it. As we humble our will before God, we will avoid the natural consequences of yielding to human desire. Similarly, when we fail to overcome temptation and we submit to our desires, we can recover with God's mercy. There is nothing
