In 2019 Fine Kula was a promising young football star in the Sharks system and had just turned 21 when he started getting intense headaches that made him lethargic. On the advice of the club doctor, he went and got an MRI and received the terrifying news that he had a cancerous brain tumour. Now, after a long, difficult journey, the best news is Fine is cancer free and his health is well on the right track, but the lessons he's learned and how the experience has changed his perspective on life is remarkable and a great reminder to us all of what really matters in life. And speaking about favourite athletes, today’s guest is right at the top of our list. Outgoing Melbourne Storm player Nicho Hynes has had a breakout year in 2021 in many ways. Not only has his performance on the field drawn the attention of many, but his strength and bravery in sharing his mental health journey publicly to raise awareness and normalise seeking help, has seen him rise as a prominent and important voice in rugby league. Today we reflect with Nicho on what 2021 has been like for him and look forward to 2022 when he will be joining the Cronulla Sharks (much to the joy of us shire based Silva’s and to the sadness of our Melbournian G Moore). Nicho is someone dedicated to using his platform to helping people and he truly blew us away with how dedicated he is to doing just that - if you already love Nicho, like so many of us do, be prepared to love him even more after hearing this conversation! Rowan Crothers was bullied as a kid because of his cerebral palsy. He struggled with his self worth and even didn't believe he'd amount to anything. But while watching the 2008 Beijing Paralympic games, as he watched people like him - champions - doing the unimaginable in sport, on the worlds stage, a light bulb went off - maybe he could do this. He started swimming at the suggestion of his physiotherapist and 11 years later not only is he a Paralympian, but a dual Gold Medallist and an incredible character that has captured the hearts of Aussies everywhere! We are always so grateful to talk to the incredible athletes we do on this podcast, but Rowan and his story has left a particular mark on our hearts - he is a true role model and inspiration for us all! We chat about his passion, his hopes for the next generation of kids with disabilities - and excitedly, his plans to keep swimming until the 2032 Brisbane Games!!! Even better -you’ve finally reunited with your brother at a new club, ready and pumped to play alongside him once more.Only one day, after training in pre-season, something isn’t right and before you know it, you’re in hospital with a doctor telling you if you’d ignored what your body was trying to tell you, the infection in your kidneys could’ve killed you. This is exactly what happened to today’s guest, Malakai Watene-Zellezniak.
