This talk will explain what Deepfakes are, the technology behind them (GANs) and why we need to be careful when using them. GANs (short for "Generative Adversarial Networks") have been revolutionising the generation of images and videos since 2014. While this machine learning architecture is being used in arts, science and video games, it is also abused to steal people's identities, for example by generating fake news with putting words into politician's mouths which they never said or creating porn with faces of famous actors and actresses. In this talk I will first give a short overview over what GANs are and how they work.
