Neben dem bereits etablierten Format COG für Cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs finden cloudoptimierte Formate auch für andere Anwendungen immer mehr Interesse. Für Point Cloud Daten existiert das COPC Format (https://copc.io/), welches auf dem bewährten offenen LASzip Format für verlustfrei komprimierte LIDAR-Daten aufbaut. Wie COGs sind die Daten rückwärtskompatibel, was die Implementation stark vereinfacht und die Adaption fördert.
Neben der guten Unterstützung sowohl von Online- als auch Offlinenutzung ist der Zugriff ohne spezialisierte Geoservices ein weiterer Vorteil von cloudoptimierten Datenformaten. Ein Standard-Webserver genügt, womit die Skalierbarkeit wesentlich vereinfacht wird.
