Trigger warning: Suicide, PTSD, depression and anxiety
There are many paths to PTSD and Suicide and many of us would expect a military man like Kevin Humphreys to attribute his triggers for these issues on the intense military battles he was involved in, but it was actually caused by something much more common and much more insidious.
Kevin is an Ex-Army Officer, rescue helicopter pilot and mental health ambassador, and he knows what it’s like to hit rock bottom. For a long time, Kevin kept his post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety buried deep. These days Kevin shares what happens when you hit rock bottom, how he figured it out, and the triggers that made a difference in transforming his life as a coach and public speaker.
In this episode he shares:
- How he got into the military
- The act of compassion that ensured his success
- What it means to be a Blackhawk helicopter pilot
- His time in the US and overseas and the impact it had
- The loneliness he experienced while in command
- The management debacle that meant his promotion actually created problems
- The toxic workplace issues he experienced in the military
- When he became suicidal
- The help he received that started him on his path to recovery
- His realisation about what he was putting his family through
- What he used and did to help heal and recover
- His realisation about PTED and how it helped him
- How long it took him to make his problems public
- The important, healing power of accepting his mental illness
- His current relationship with shame and pride
