179: Bob Ryan | 2017 Boston Celtics Rapid Fire | Powered by CLNS Radio
One week to go: The Boston Celtics are entering their final week of the pre-season. It is just the exhibition NBA season, but thus far, the Celts have looked good and the fans (those who watched) have to be pleased with what they see. How will this translate to the regular season which begins in ten days? The returning Larry H. Russell tries to answer this question the best he can while also giving his own player outlook for this season. Bob Ryan of The Boston Globe returns to the featured guest chair once again and takes some rapid fire questions from LHR. Questions include: What’s the best and worst case with Boston in 2017? Is there a concrete definition to what is and what is not a successful season? What are the team’s biggest and least of concerns? Which teams, save for the Cleveland Cavaliers present the most problems with the Celts in the East? With the season just days a week, LHR and Bob give an entire individual and team rundown on the coming 2016-17 NBA campaign. It’s all on this week’s Celtics Beat. Three NBA pre-season games are in the books for the Boston Celtics, and there have been some decent takeaways. So much so that we actually have a mailbag this week on Celtics Beat. Justin Poulin of Celtics Stuff Live, sits in this week for Larry H. Russell to discuss the opening slate of pre-season basketball. Jeff Clark, founder of CelticsBlog joins Justin in Suday’s featured segment to talk about what they’ve seen thus far in the pre-season. Such as how the floor spacing created by Horford has really benefited Jaylen Brown and Isaiah Thomas, the battle for the final roster spot and whether or not the Celtics can beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the regular season. And that’s not all. Justin and Bobby Manning of CelticsBlog run through the mailbag and answer (almost) all of your questions! It’s all on this week’s Celtics Beat. 176: Jo Jo White | Boston Celtics Classics | Kevin Garnett Retires | Powered by CLNS Radio
Every year on Celtics Beat, we delve into the history of the NBA’s most legendary franchise...the Boston Celtics! This year, during the off-season, we individually profile a player rather than a specific game. Jo Jo White returns to the airwaves to talk about his career as a Celtic, how hard it was to come to a team that just lost Bill Russell and going about to establish its own championship pedigree of its own. How relevant is that to today as this current group of Celtics, where after the departure of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, Boston is now clearly on a similar upward path? And speaking of KG, it goes about saying there will be some reflection on his career following his retirement. It’s all on this week’s Celtics Beat. The end of the primer series marks the end of the NBA off-season. With the Boston Celtics training camp set to open next week, it’s is the last show of the summer of Celtics Beat. And we wrap up the primer series with the Atlanta Hawks with Chris Vivlamore. There’s been a lot of talk about what the addition of Al Horford will do for the Celtics. But what about his loss to the Hawks? That has gone under the radar, but safe to say, it won’t this week. Kevin Pelton of ESPN also returns to the airwaves. With the conclusion of the primer series of Boston’s most relevant foes, but what about everyone else. KP gives the rundown of the entire conference in today’s featured guest segment. 174: Ian Eagle | Brooklyn Nets Primer | Boston Celtics Future Drafts | Powered by CLNS Radio
NFL Kickoff Weekend means that we’re one week closer to the start of the NBA season. And we continue our Boston Celtics primer series, this week not looking at an NBA Playoffs foe, but rather a supplier of highly valued first round selections in the NBA Draft: Our Yearly Preview of the Brooklyn Nets. Ian Eagle, Nets play-by-play announcer for the YES Network, stops by for his annual September appearance on Celtics Beat. Brooklyn cleaned house this off-season, new GM, new coach, new players. So, it goes without saying: How will it work out? What are the philosophies of Sean Marks and their rookie head coach Kenny Atkinson? Are they going to put an emphasis on player development and not worry about the repercussions of sending more high lottery picks Boston’s way. And yes, we’ll do it. Point blank: Will the Nets be the worst team in the NBA? And if not, what is their best case scenario for 2016-17? And while this is a Celtics-centric show, most are well aware of Ian’s role as one of the NFL on CBS top play-by-play announcers. Ian will be calling Dolphins v. Seahawks game today on CBS. So we’ll cheat and get a little football talk. How will the New England Patriots survive without Tom Brady? And of course, we get Ian’s SuperBowl 51 pick. It’s all on this week’s Celtics Beat. 173: Stephanie Ready & Dave McMenamin | Charlotte Hornets & Cleveland Cavaliers Primers | Powered by CLNS Radio
Happy Labor Day! Summer is now officially over here on the East Coast. The NBA season is now just weeks away and the Boston Celtics are counting down the days to training camp and the 2016-17 campaign. And in doing so, we continue our primers of the Celtics premiere competition in the NBA’s Eastern Conference here on Celtics Beat. Stephanie Ready, color commentator for the Charlotte Hornets on FOX Sports South is first up. The Hornets were one of the surprise teams in the league last year and are generally regarded to be one of the best coached teams in the league. What makes this band of castaways go? Last year, they rode productive seasons from many free-agents-to-be such as Al Jefferson, Courtney Lee, Jeremy Lin, Marvin Williams and Nic Batum. Lin, Lee and Jefferson are gone and weren’t really replaced. Will these losses drop Charlotte from being a team to be taken seriously? And if not, how will they be replaced? Despite finishing with identical records last year, can we get Stephanie to admit that Boston will be far and away a superior team to Charlotte in 2017? Then there’s the other end of the spectrum. The clear-cut favorites and alpha dogs of the Eastern Conference: LeBron James and the World Champion Cleveland Cavaliers. Outside of a LeBron injury, what can stop the Cavs from getting back to the Finals? Dave spoke with Kyrie Irvin before the Olympics, listen to find out what he told him. 172: Quinn Buckner & Coach Jack Armstrong | Indiana Pacers & Toronto Raptors Primers | Powered by CLNS Radio
Training camp is now less than a month away and Labor Day is next week. The summer is winding down which means the NBA season is right around the corner. Which gives Celtics Beat ample opportunity to preview some conference rivals for the Boston Celtics in 2016-17. Quinn Buckner, longtime NBA veteran, former Celtic, and current Indiana Pacers color commentator on FOX Sports Indiana is back on the CLNS Radio airwaves once again to give a primer on the Pacers and their off-season. No team outside of Oakland added more talent to their roster this season than Indiana. What kind of challenges will there be to get all these pieces to mesh? What other weaknesses do the Pacers have that the Celtics could exploit? And would Paul George, being the best player in a potential playoff series, knock off teams like the Celtics and God forbid, the Cleveland Cavaliers? It doesn’t end there. Coach Jack Armstrong of TSN also stops by to talk about the Toronto Raptors, and their quiet summer which was highlighted by retaining DeMar DeRozan and signing former Celtic Jared Sullinger. Will that cut the mustard? Jack is a huge fan of the Celtics off-season and a huge fan of this Boston team. He also believes the Raptors took a step back this year. Does that mean he believes the Raptors will surrender the Atlantic Division to Boston? Find out on this week’s Celtics Beat. 171: Kristen Ledlow | 2016-17 NBA Schedule Release | Boston Celtics w/ 22 Nat’l TV Games | Powered by CLNS Radio
Turn the page: We are now well into August and everything is in the bank for the Boston Celtics and the NBA. Last season is now last season and this past summer is now last summer. The NBA schedule has now been released and it’s now about looking forward to the 2016-17 NBA season. Kristen Ledlow of NBAtv and Turner Sports is back on the broadcast to talk about the biggest takeaway from the new schedule: The Boston Celtics are featured on national TV 22 times. Wow! That certainly provides plenty of discussion for the show. Does that Al Horford addition really make that much of a difference? Can the Celtics really be considered as a (gulp!) dark-horse title contender? Kristen also gives a rundown of which games she is most looking forward to for the 2017 NBA’s regular season. It’s all on this wee’s Celtics Beat. Brought to you by Blue Apron, audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, and American Farmer’s Network. 170: Austin Ainge | Off-Season in Review | Boston Celtics Draft & Free Agency w/ Matt Keller | Powered by CLNS Radio
Cherry on top: The 2016 Boston Celtics Off-Season is now likely over and the countdown to NBA Training Camp is officially on. The Celtics had a very busy NBA Draft, made a major splash with Al Horford, almost lured Kevin Durant, and were quiet again on the trade front. Unquestionably a better team for 2017, the Celts are rapidly rising in the NBA ranks. Austin Ainge, Boston Celtics Director of Player Personnel returns to CLNS Radio to recap the entire Off-Season with Larry H. Russell in this week’s very special Summer in Review show. Starting from the immediate fallout of the playoff defeat, Austin provides exclusive insight into how the team planned to approach the summer then; what the brass felt would be the best pathways to immediately improve the roster while maintaining long-term flexibility. LHR and Austin review the transpirings of the summer in chronological order: Did the NBA Draft go as well as the team planned? What did they get out of it? Why weren’t the able to get any potential moves done? And of course, July 4th weekend: What went down: Al Horford. And what didn’t: Kevin Durant. Austin also provides his thoughts on this year’s team and caps it off by, yes, providing a letter grade for the Celtics summer. There’s also immediate reaction. The Lead Sports Matt Keller stops by following Austin’s appearance to offer his analysis on Ainge’s interview. It’s a jammed-packed edition of Celtics Beat. 168: A. Sherrod Blakely | Boston Celtics Roster Status | Doc Rivers & Blake Griffin Back in the News | Powered by CLNS Radio
July 31, 2007: The nine year anniversary of Kevin Garnett being traded to the Boston Celtics. Many have drawn today's date as the "line in the sand" for potential trades to occur. Today, Jimmy Toscano of the Boston Metro joins Nick Gelso to fill the host duties for Larry H. Russell. A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE is today's featured guest. With Doc Rivers recently back in the news for his candid interview on The Vertical Podcast, Toscano, Gelso and Blakely discuss everything nostalgic from the Kevin Garnett Era, Paul Pierce retiring with the Boston Celtics. Heck, even Dennis Johnson's name creeps into the conversation. In current Celtics news, Sherrod discusses Jae Crowder taking exception to his 2017 Free Agents Article on Twitter, who will make the roster, Marcus Smart's potential and they even go cliche and give their win predictions if the season were to start today. 167: Michael Lee | NBA & Boston Celtics Off-Season Discussion w/ Adam Himmelsbach | Powered by CLNS Radio
Are things beginning to quiet down? That’s been the case on Twitter. Does that mean it is in the real world for the Boston Celtics and the rest of the NBA? CLNS Radio and Celtics Beat presents two people who may have the answers: The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach and The Vertical at Yahoo! Sports’ Michael Lee. They’ll stop by to provide the answers to the following questions: How close are the Celts on a deal for Blake Griffin? Is Jahlil Okafor a potential option or is that just media day dreaming? While there’s seemingly zero talk for Russell Westbrook now, what about during the season when the Oklahoma City Thunder will likely struggle? And most importantly, should the Celtics bother going for it with how good the Golden State Warriors will be this season? Oh, and we have major groundbreaking roster news: Gerald Green has signed with the Celtics and Tyler Zeller is back! It’s all on this week’s edition of Celtics Beat. 166: Mike Smith | Blake Griffin & Russell Westbrook NBA Trade Rumors | Boston Celtics Summer League w/ Brian Robb | Powered by CLNS Radio
The NBA off-season is still red hot, both in the rumor mill and on the court in NBA Summer League out in Las Vegas. Are the Boston Celtics on the verge of something massive? Could their next super team feature Blake Griffin and Russell Westbrook to go along with Al Horford? Who would go and who would stay on this current Celtics roster? Michael Smith, former Celtics and current Los Angeles Clippers color commentator goes over it all on the Blake Griffin trade front. Are the Clips really interested in breaking up their team? If so, what would it cost on Boston’s end? Is it worth it for the Celts? Would a Griffin-Westbrook-Horford group be a title team? And that’s not all. Brian Robb was in Las Vegas and chatted up with CLNS Radio’s own Jared Weiss to give the lowdown on the NBA Summer League and what to make of many of the young Celtics’ performance. 165: Abby Chin | Kevin Durant Spurns Boston Celtics & OKC Thunder; Joins GS Warriors w/ Danny Leroux | Powered by CLNS Radio
Kevin Durant has spurned the Boston Celtics, dumped the Oklahoma City Thunder and has decided to join the powerhouse Golden State Warriors. It still stings and it’s utterly flabbergasting. How could someone be so hell-bent on taking the easy way out to win a championship and join a bitter rival to meet an end goal? Danny Leroux of realGMRadio will stop by to attempt to answer those questions. At the very least, it should be a lot of fun. But will it be as fun unless the Warriors come out like gangbusters next year and 2007-Patriots the league? Or will they cruise to make sure they win the NBA championship? That’s not all there. Abby Chin of CSNNE will stop by to talk about...yes, the Boston Celtics. They who just signed Al Horford and introduced him this past Friday afternoon. Is the off-season still good enough for the Celts and should they be more aggressive or lay low for the next few years knowing the Dubs will likely dominate the NBA? It’s all on this week’s edition of Celtics Beat. Brought to you by Blue Apron, audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, and American Farmer’s Network. 164: Howard Beck | Al Horford to the Boston Celtics w/Justin Poulin | Powered by CLNS Radio
Al Horford to the Boston Celtics - yay! Well, the big fallacy that the Celts have never signed a major free agent is over. And it’s more than just that. The Celts added a major piece. How much does Horford improve the team? What kind of repercussions does it have in the rest of the Eastern Conference? And will the Celts get Kevin Durant?! Justin Poulin is up early to provide instant analysis to the mayhem. Howard Beck will also stop by for a few brief moments to rundown the rest of NBA Free Agency. There’s a ton of money being thrown around, and outside of maybe Horford, a lot of it is on lesser players. Will a lot of teams regret many of these players signed to these deals? What type of long term impact will it have for the NBA not just on the court, but off? Is a labor crisis looming or is the league just so healthy that nothing will stop the train from rolling along? It’s all on this week’s edition of Celtics Beat. Brought to you by Blue Apron, audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, and American Farmer’s Network. 163: Scott Howard-Cooper + Ben Golliver | 2016 NBA Draft Review | Boston Celtics | Powered by CLNS Radio
Was it a clunker? There was a lot of hype and anticipation heading into the 2016 NBA Draft for the Boston Celtics, but universal sentiment has everyone from fans, media and possibly those within the organization far from enamored about the night the Celtics had back on Thursday evening. Sure they didn’t make a big move, but what about the rest of the night? Did anything go right? Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com and NBAtv will check into Celtics Beat first to give a rundown on the six selections the Celts utilized. Let’s cut right to the chase: What can Jaylen Brown do? Does he seriously have the highest bust potential of all the top players? How fearful should people be of his lack of production at Cal? Is he even better to last year’s top target, Justise Winslow? And what about the other players, including the three second round selections? What are their strengths and do any of them have futures in the NBA? That’s not all there. There was plenty of fallout from the NBA Draft. Where does Thursday leave the Celtics? Did it set back the team in any capacity? Why aren’t teams biting on Boston’s supposedly loaded warchest? Are teams completely afraid of trading with Danny Ainge? Ben Golliver of Sports Illustrated offers his views and more on what was a highly talked-about day in the national circles regarding what Boston did and did not do on Draft Night. It’s all on this week’s edition of Celtics Beat. Brought to you by Blue Apron, audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, and American Farmer’s Network. 156: Kyle Draper | Player Report Cards | 2016 Boston Celtics | Thunder-Spurs NBA Playoffs
Scrap those five-point plans on getting Kevin Durant to the Boston Celtics this summer. There’s still a bit of a wait-and-see game there with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the midst of a huge playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Playoffs. So until that series reaches a conclusion and if the Spurs can take care of business, the Thunder remain overwhelming favorites in keeping their superstar. So let’s talk about what we have in front of us and that still being a fairly fresh, and wildly successful 2016 Celtics campaign in the NBA. This week, we’ll get the red pen out and dish out report cards. Kyle Draper, host of Celtics Pre + Postgame live on Comcast Sports Net New England is today’s only guest and he’ll play the role of professor as he and LHR hand out their grades. Where did they agree and disagree? How much should injuries detract from the breakout seasons of Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk and Jae Crowder? Despite struggling in the postseason, can you give anything less than a straight A to Isaiah Thomas? What about James Young and the rookies? And is Jared Sullinger worthy of an ...F? Kyle and LHR go up and down the entire roster and even dish out grades to Coach Brad Stevens, Danny Ainge, and the fans! It’s all on this week’s episode of Celtics Beat. We’ll put the final bow on the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals series and recap Game 6 with Jared Weiss of The Garden Report. Bob Ryan returns to the show as today’s featured guest segment. Mr. Ryan too will recap the series against Atlanta and go a bit more in depth as he offers his take on whether or not Brad Stevens was outcoached by Mike Budenholzer; whether the Celts’ effort levels at times during Games 5 and 6 were acceptable; whether Boston should’ve rested a few bodies down the stretch. Professor Ryan will also get his red ink out and grade the Boston Celtics in 2016 as well as take some preliminary looks at the Celts’ off-season which starts with the NBA Draft Lottery on May 17th. 154: Chris Vivlamore | Atlanta Hawks v. Boston Celtics Game 4 Preview | 2016 NBA Playoffs Game 3 Recap w/ Justin Poulin
Well the Boston Celtics are back in this 2016 NBA Playoffs series against the Atlanta Hawks, but is it at a major price? Isaiah Thomas had a huge game against the Hawks but there’s much to discuss about what the deal will be from the NBA league office. Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution is back on the CLNS Radio airwaves to talk about Boston’s big Game 3 win over the Hawks. How’d they do it? How much of an impact did that home crowd the C’s had at the TD Garden? What adjustments, if any, do the Hawks have to make? As short handed as the Celts are, can extend the series let alone beat the Hawks? And what about this whole Isaiah Thomas so-called incident? Has the NBA taken it too far micromanaging every non-basketball play? Isn’t the Marcus Smart flop worse in terms of impacting the integrity of the game? That and more as well as an appearance from Celtics Stuff Live Justin Poulin to discuss LHR’s latest article which ran this past week on CLNSRadio.com. It’s all on this week’s episode of Celtics Beat. Brought to you by audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, American Farmer’s Network, and Harry’s. 151: Leon Powe | Boston Celtics v. Golden State Warriors Recap | Los Angeles Lakers Preview | 2008 Celtics v. 16 Warriors & San Antonio Spurs
Signature win...and then some. Tough to put a capper on the Boston Celtics ending the 54 game home winning streak of the Golden State Warriors and becoming the first team in the 2015-16 NBA campaign to defeat the Dubs at the Oracle. First off, how in the world did the Celts do this on a second night of a back-to-back, without Jae Crowder...and against a team that was 68-7?! Not only is this the trademark win of the Brad Stevens era, but was winning on Friday even more valuable than winning a playoff series? Leon Powe is today’s guest with LHR to talk about Friday’s huge win. As well as: Who would win, Leon’s 2008 Celtics or this year’s Warriors or San Antonio Spurs team? How attractive is the Celtics situation to players in and around the league and can Boston be an enjoyable city to young NBA athletes? That’s not all, this week’s edition of Celtics Beat has the Celtics pregame segment for tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Around the NBA in 5 is back as well, to, you guessed it: Pile on the D’Angelo Russell and Nick Young debacle. All this on this week’s episode of Celtics Beat. 150: Kevin Pelton | Boston Celtics Recap v. Orlando Magic, Toronto Raptors & Phoenix Suns | Marcus Smart Struggles | Re-Signing Jared Sullinger
Happy Easter! The Boston Celtics have righted the ship recently with some easy wins over some lackluster foes in the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, and the Kyle Lowry-less Toronto Raptors. LHR recaps the week that was including Saturday night’s contest against the Phoenix Suns in the 150th episode of Celtics Beat. Kevin Pelton of ESPN is this week’s featured guest on this Easter Sunday edition of Celtics Beat. While the Celts have righted the ship to an extent, fans and media members alike have gotten a bit antsy over Marcus Smart’s shooting woes to say the least. How is this affecting Smart’s development? Will this allow him to live up to expectations of being the sixth overall pick or should they be quelled a bit? And what about other contributors to this Boston team and their situations going forward? For example, what will it take for the Celtics to re-sign a guy like Jared Sullinger? No Around the NBA in 5 again, however with Pelton in the house -- there’s plenty of talk about the greatest team in NBA history. Mr. Pelton once ranked the 1986 Boston Celtics as the second best team in NBA history. What calculations brought him to that conclusion and where will the 2016 Golden State Warriors fit in that debate when it’s all said and done? All this on this week’s episode of Celtics Beat. Donut week: The worst case scenario as stated on Episode #148 has come true here for Episode #149 -- the Boston Celtics went winless this past week and are now riding a four game losing streak. After losses to Paul George and the Indiana Pacers, Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the Toronto Raptors, the Boston Celtics will look to end their losing streak against the lowly Philadelphia 76ers tonight. ESPN’s Chris Forsberg recaps the week and previews tonight’s game with LHR. Sekou Smith of NBAtv and NBA.com also makes a return appearance for today’s featured guest segment. One major storyline this past week was Kevin Durant playing in Boston. How realistic is it that he can be a Celtic next year and is he really a guy who can single handedly elevate a franchise like LeBron James can? LHR and Sekou go deep in this free-flowing feature which also includes chatter about the national perception of the Celtics and the city of Boston to prospective free agents and whether the historic 2016 Golden State Warriors or San Antonio Spurs can break the 1986 Celtics home win record. 148: Michael Lee | Kevin Durant and NBA Free Agency | Boston Celtics Recap v. Memphis Grizzlies + Houston Rockets w/ Jay King
Home winning streak snapped: The Houston Rockets came into Boston Friday night and ended the longest winning streak the Celts have had in Boston in nearly 25 years. How troubling is this with the Celtics brutal schedule ahead? LHR and MassLive’s Jay King discuss whether the Celts should be given a bit of a mulligan for Friday with how good they’ve looked, such as a recent win against the Memphis Grizzlies. Michael Lee, senior NBA writer for The Vertical at Yahoo Sports offers up his vantage point on the Boston Celtics. Michael’s been on recent assignment in Los Angeles covering the Celts’ arch-rival, the Lakers. How does the job Danny Ainge and co. have done matchup with what LA has going for them? And which of these teams is in a better position to not just contend, but make the move to contend? It may not be the answer that you think. Most importantly, Kevin Durant -- another week of discussion. Lee is yet another name in the national media who believes there’s a legitimate chance for the Celtics and he’d be a perfect fit. Michael and LHR go in depth with this and Larry H. finishes with his thoughts and gameplan as the Thunder come to Boston this coming Wednesday. All this on this week’s episode of Celtics Beat. 147: Howard Beck | Boston Celtics Recap v. Cleveland Cavaliers + New York Knicks + Portland Trail Blazers | Kevin Durant
Elite in the East: The Boston Celtics sit alone at third in the Eastern Conference even after last night’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers and a perfect homestand with victories over the Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, and New York Knicks. Howard Beck, senior NBA writer for Bleacher Report is yet another in the national media who’s attention has been directed at what’s going on in Boston. Can the Celtics really compete with LeBron James and the Cavs this year and actually make the NBA Finals? But if not, is it now just a matter of time. Is the long-term savior just around the door. The Oklahoma City Thunder are underachieving and seemingly have no shot in the Western Conference. So does that not make the Celtics a prime landing spot for Durant? The answer is: Yes! LHR gives Howard his plan and breakdown on how the Celts can put a plan in place to get their franchise cornerstone. All this on this week’s episode of Celtics Beat. 146: Rich Gotham | Boston Celtics President | Recap v. Milwaukee Bucks + Miami Heat
The homestand has begun and the final stretch of the season is here. The Boston Celtics have completed the first two legs of a five game home set with games against the Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat with the Utah Jazz on tap for tomorrow. With Kelly Olynyk out, the Celts are dearly missing his presence and treading water. Can that continue or are they in a bit of trouble in these final 23 games? LHR has that and a brief recap of the week. Rich Gotham, President of the Boston Celtics is featured on today’s episode of Celtics Beat. Rich discusses everything from the current play of the team, the perception of fans both towards the current product and the future prospects, as well as the state of the organization. 145: Steve Bulpett | NBA & Boston Celtics Trade Deadline Recap | Denver Nuggets Pre-Game Show w/ Justin Poulin
The NBA Trade Deadline has come and gone. No moves for the Boston Celtics, but could there have been? There have been rumors that Jahlil Okafor was nearly sent to Boston before the Philadelphia 76ers backed out at the last second? Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald stops by Celtics Beat to recap the deadline. Bulpett may have been the man who cracked the code on the mysterious trade that Danny Ainge alluded to in Friday interviews in Boston. It’s not just if Okafor was the guy, what was the level of interest in other Celtics players in the roster. Are there worries that the team may have ‘too many’ draft picks for Draft Night? And what about the other rumored deals for Dwight Howard or Al Horford? Were these at all legit? Celtics Beat isn’t done there. Are there serious trade conversations taking place? Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical right now says no...at least not yet. Have the Boston Celtics turned the cornah?! This won’t be the first time you’ll hear that really annoying cliche phrase! It’s the theme of the latest edition of Celtics Beat as LHR asks that question to himself, to which he answers as well as to ESPN Boston’s Chris Forsberg who’s back in the house. So many questions and so many answers! Have they turned the corner? Whom in the NBA would you trade the Nets pick for? Was it truly beneficial the team made the NBA Playoffs last year? 141: Bob Ryan | 1986 Boston Celtics Special Edition | NBA Greatest Team Ever
It’s the 30th anniversary for the 1986 Boston Celtics championship. Is that the best single season team in NBA history? Bob Ryan, author, commentator, and longtime columnist for the Boston Globe is the most well-regarded individual to answer that question and he’ll join Celtics Beat to offer his take with host Larry H. Russell. LHR and Bob will relive that season in a way so unique from any other entity. Are there any arguments as to what teams were better. What about Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led Lakers in 1987? Or any of the best Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls teams such as those in 1992 or 1996? Yes, we may be in the midst of the NBA season and LHR will touch briefly upon the week and what lies ahead. But a special season does call for the occasional special show. So the tradition-seekers will definitely appreciate the 141st edition of Celtics Beat. Celtics Beat is brought to you by audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, American Farmer’s Network, and Harry’s. 140: Kristen Ledlow | Recap v Indiana Pacers, Phoenix Suns, Washington Wizards | 1986 Boston Celtics w/ Skip Perham
After a rough stretch of a lot of losing, the Boston Celtics are seemingly back on track. Yes, they missed a golden opportunity to really establish themselves as one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, but the Celtics were at a point where there season could’ve gone ary. However, the season has been a little stale. The lack of improvement from last year, while not crippling in any sense of the imagination, to the franchise is still agitating to the fans. If fans are a little frustrated with the lack of improvement thus far, it may be best to check out CSNNE’s series on the 1986 Boston Celtics. LHR will get some brief words with Skip Perham from The Network. Consider this a therapy edition of Celtics Beat. To continue in that mold, we haven’t gone Around the NBA in 5 recently. So why don’t we go Around the NBA in about 20? Or better yet, just discuss the two teams that are on a head-on collision to decide the Larry O’Brien trophy (and possibly in January!) - the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs. We are a week away from what is gearing up to be one of the biggest regular season games in memory, and NBATVs and Turner Sports Kristen Ledlow will stop by for her maiden voyage on Celtics Beat. Russell says no but he’s upset just as anyone should be. What does guest Brian Scalabrine of Comcast Sports Net have to say? 137: Sean Deveney | Recap v Hornets + Pistons | New York Knicks v. Boston Celtics Pre-Game w/ Chris Forsberg
Final show of 2015 for Celtics Beat. What an eventful year for the Boston Celtics. At this time last year, the organization was in no man’s land. Well, at least they had the Brooklyn picks! But now they have established themselves as a respectable foe in less than one calendar year in the NBA. Now, what is the next step? Sean Deveney of the Sporting News will return to the show. It’s all quiet on the NBA rumor mill. Is that a case of the media not working over the holiday? Is there any trade that could possibly be made? Even something as trivial as David Lee? There has not been a year that hasn’t gone by where Danny Ainge hasn’t made an in-season move so it’s doubtful this year will be different. The Celtics also have a game on tap today back at the TD Garden against Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis and the New York Knicks. 136: Sean Grande | Boston Celtics v Cleveland Cavaliers + Atlanta Hawks | NBA with Ian Thomsen
2015 is coming to a close and was a phenomenal calendar year for the Boston Celtics. Unfortunately, the Celtics suffered what was unequivocally their worst week of the calendar year: A big fat doughnut. Losses to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks left the Celts with an 0-fer week. Sean Grande, radio play by play voice for the Boston Celtics on 98.5 FM The Sports Hub is this week’s featured guest. What happened to the Boston Celtics this week? Does this team need to make a trade to shake things up like last year? Or will it be an issue that teams are afraid to trade with Danny Ainge? If there’s nothing to be done, what plagued the team this past week and how do they improve? Ian Thomsen of NBA.com will also stop by to discuss where the Celtics are compared to their peers in the rest of the league. There have been quite a few trade rumors around the Celtics. Are these even rumors or are these media dirty tricks? Celtics Beat is brought to you by lynda.com/clns, audiblepodcast.com/celtics, Casper, American Farmer’s Network, and Harry’s. 134: David Wesley | Boston Celtics Week Recap | Marcus Smart health + Kobe Bryant Legacy w/ Justin Poulin | New Orleans Pelicans Pre-Game Show
The long road trip for the Boston Celtics is nearing its conclusion. After a trip that started in Florida, crossed south of the border, and then crossed it again -- the Boston Celtics are ready to wrap things up with the New Orleans Pelicans tomorrow night. Some highlights and lowlights in games against the Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs. Host Larry H. Russell will briefly recap the week as well as look ahead to Monday’s game in New Orleans. David Wesley, former Boston Celtics and current color man for the Pels will return to the show for his trifecta appearance in a special edition of our Boston Celtics Pre-Game segment. New Orleans scored a big win back on Friday over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Will that get their disappointing season off the mat and carry over to a win against Boston? And how happy is Anthony Davis down in the Bayou in that current situation? Justin Poulin will also check back in for a brief segment. LHR isn’t too happy with Marcus Smart continuing to miss games. Is it time to start pointing fingers at the Celtics condition staff? Oh, and that Kobe Bryant guy of the Los Angeles Lakers retired. Around the NBA in 5 will be brought in for that take. 132: Mike Gorman | Boston Celtics Week Recap v OKC Thunder, Rockets, Mavs | Brooklyn Nets Pre-Game Show
Best defensive team in the NBA: The Boston Celtics are exerting their will on the competition. After a big week, including some good wins on the road against tough Western Conference foes, these Celtics may have found their identity. Mike Gorman, play-by-play announcer for the Boston Celtics is this week’s guest. Is this really what fans should expect from this team throughout the course of the team, and could that to, dare we say it, a 50 win season? Justin Poulin also joins show once again for the Boston Celtics Pre-Game segment for tonight’s game against the Brooklyn Nets. Will it even be a game? Some don’t think so, particularly after Friday night. Justin and LHR will get you ready, and they’ll also both go Around the NBA in 5. Well, not the whole NBA, the segment will be dedicated to the Houston Rockets and their situation. 131: Jeff Goodman | Boston Celtics Week Recap v Bucks, Pacers, Hawks | Brooklyn Nets Draft Pick Watch | Oklahoma City Thunder Pre-Game
An up-and-down season thus far has produced yet another up-and-down week for the Boston Celtics. After Friday night’s huge win against the Atlanta Hawks, it finished on a big up as the Celts have clawed their way back to .500. It will be hard to continue it today as the Celtics will travel to play Russell Westbrook and possibly Kevin Durant as they take on the Oklahoma City Thunder. Justin Poulin will take about today’s game briefly with Larry H. Russell in the American Farmer’s Network Pre-Game segment. Jeff Goodman, ESPN basketball insider will also make a return appearance to the show. College basketball is now officially underway and there isn’t a better person to talk too. But Jeff and LHR will delve more into just the college hoops and prospects ranks. There will be, yes, more Celtics talk. Here’s a question not just for Jeff, but the Celtics Beat audience as it’s the Facebook Question of the Week: Should the Boston Celtics take the Brooklyn Nets picks off the table during trade discussions? The games are underway and we’ve got another packed show.
