Antrim, N. Ireland now residing in beautiful Wiltshire, England, Willo's Song is the working title for a musical project involving singer/songwriter Daryl Ball and various other friends, family and musicians to have fun and make music that they enjoy. You can find out more details about Daryl on his website or on his Contributor Page on our website. A Christmas Favourite poem All we're going to tell you about this little surprise, is that the original was written by Clement C. Moore. :) The Magic of a Christmas Tree by Judy Pancoast This is a piece of innocent magic from Judy whose album, The House on Christmas Street and the title song of Judy's family Christmas CD, "The House on Christmas Street," is a holiday hit which can be heard each Christmas season on radio stations across the country. She has also been featured on NPR's "Day to Day" and "Marketplace." You can find out more about Judy and her work with children on her website or her Contributor Page on our website. On Midwinter's Day by Damh the Bard We can do no better than finish the show with Damh singing us out with his superb track On Midwinter's Day. Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. You can find out more about Damh on his website at Pagan Music or on our Contributor Page. You can find out more about the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids that he represents on their website at druidry.org. Competition We give the answer to our competition about the other name of the Book of Kells and reveal it to be the 'Book of Columba'. We can proudly announce that the winner from a tremendous entry is Scott McGovern - well done, Scott. Farewell Slogan As we are moving to the Welsh stories, we thought we should say goodbye to you in Welsh rather than in Irish, so you will hear us wish you 'Hwyl fawr!', which means Goodbye and have fun, or more literally Wishing a Good Mood on you! Customs of the Fey in Northern Scotland This is our Autumn Holiday Special for 2010. We've got a fantastic collection of customs and history about the Fey in Northern Scotland, three great pieces of music, some listener feedback and a superb poem about Summer by Alexander Pope. Top all that off with our usual chat, and you've got a superb show. Hope you enjoy it and have as much fun as we had making it! We chat about the new Irish film 'Ondine' with Colin Farrell (IMDB) which is the story of a 'Selkie'. In addition, we mention the new Cuchulainn film 'Hound' which we have blogged about previously and Gary mentions a new film about Scottish clans at war, called 'The Clan'. England born Chris, as well as Jim and Derrek like to enjoy ourselves, and like to get everybody around us to have a fun time, but we also are very dedicated musicians. Although it may seem like Claymore is just about jumping around and not appearing serious, all of us are committed to being the best at what each of us do. We have our regular drummer Don (Otto) Wilson out with us on most occasions also. We are truly passionate about the music. We are also very grateful for our family and friends, who come out or support us in many different ways. You can find out more details about Claymore on their website or on their Contributor Page on our website. Fairies by Walter Gregor (1881) This section comes from the book 'Notes on the Folk-Lore of the North-East of Scotland' and the introduction says: This is an ethnographic study of the inhabitants of the North-Eastern area of Scotland in the mid-19th century, at a time when an agrarian, barter economy still prevailed. Life was hard among these remote coastal communities, and they lived in fear of maleficent witches and the 'Evil Eye'. Many of the rituals, taboos and folkways in this book are to ward off witchcraft directed against economic mainstays such as livestock and fishing. The book has many fascinating bits of lore, as well as extensive oral poetry, all in Scots dialect. (There is, thankfully, an extensive glossary at the end, in case ye're na sure what all the clatterin's aboot.). There are also detailed descriptions of holidays, weddings, and other celebrations, which reveal that life was not completely grim. [Sacred Texts] The chapter we read from is specifically about Fairies and customs associated with them. [source] King of the Fairies by Anne Roos Anne has graciously allowed us to play King of the Fairies which is a superb folk piece from her album, A Light in the Forest. More details about Anne and her albums can be found on her Contributor Page. Anne's music repertoire spans traditional Celtic (Irish, Scottish, Welsh), English, folk, religious and secular, Early, Renaissance and classical music, to Broadway, contemporary, pop and Jazz, and is virtually unlimited. She can easily provide the traditional "Canon in D" and "Here Comes the Bride" for a wedding processional, and play classic Frank Sinatra or Metallica at a reception. Her ability to faithfully play such a broad range of musical styles has helped to establish her popularity. Visit Anne's website celtic harp music or find more details on her Contributor Page. Summer by Alexander Pope, 1709 Alexander Pope (21 May 1688 – 30 May 1744) was an eighteenth-century English poet, best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer. He is the third most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare and Tennyson. Pope is famous for his use of the heroic couplet. [Wiki] The poem comes from the wonderful poetry.about.com. Summer from the Second Pastoral See what Delights in Sylvan Scenes appear! Descending Gods have found Elysium here. In Woods bright Venus with Adonis stray'd; And chast Diana haunts the Forest Shade. Come lovely Nymph, and bless the silent Hours, When Swains from Sheering seek their nightly Bow'rs; When weary Reapers quit the sultry Field, And crown'd with Corn, their Thanks to Ceres yield. This harmless Grove no lurking Viper hides, But in my Breast the Serpent Love abides. Here Bees from Blossoms sip the rosy Dew, But your Alexis knows no Sweet but you. In 2003 we formed Portcullis, and Jason began to put our CD together, which was released in 2004. You can find out more about Portcullis on their Myspace page or on their Contributor Page. Competition No.2 - The Book of Kells Our second competition is about the Book of Kells and the prize is a copy of Aiden Meehan's Celtic Design: A Beginner's Manual. Dance With Me by Jenna Greene "Her ethereal music is inspired by Celtic lore and nature myth. She believes both nature and music are powerful healers. Fused together, her music will take you on a journey to sacred groves, standing stones and places of beauty within yourself." Dance With Me: is a light-hearted jig about not taking life too seriously. I wrote this song after having a very comical argument with my husband Doug who always complained that I didn't write enough upbeat songs. I had always wanted to write an Irish drinking song. This song, while having the spirit of a drinking song, has no beer consumption at all so we lovingly refer to it as my "non-alcoholic drinking song". Jenna can be found on Myspace, but her own website provides lots of useful information. You can find out more details about Jenna on her Contributor Page on our website. Email [email protected], or leave us a message using Speakpipe The Festival of the Fires Our fabulous news item introduces the Festival of Fires which is a resuscitation of the ancient fires of Tara that were lit on the Hill of Uisneach and the taken from County to County to ignite all of the fires in Ireland. Originally known as Bealtaine, the summertime festival was an important fixture on the worldwide calendar, attracting attendees from the four corners of the ancient world. Having not being officially celebrated in hundreds of years the festival is to return, rising from the ashes of the Bealtaine name as Festival of the Fires. It promises to be an event unlike anything ever witnessed in modern times - an iconic national celebration to truly ignite the summer. Created through the alchemy of ceremony, heritage, music, theatre, literature, arts, crafts, poetry, holistic health and sustainability. Festival of the Fires will feature the collective talents of hundreds of participants drawn from all over Ireland and the world, gathering at the exact centre-point of Ireland to celebrate the onset of summer. One of the ceremonial highlights of the festival will be the lighting of a national fire, ignited first on the summit of Uisneach and then carried to hilltops in every one of Ireland's 32 counties. In ancient times, this sacred Uisneach fire was the catalyst for coast-to-coast celebrations with festivals and gatherings taking place in the fire sites, and in the communities below. You can find out more about the festival on the website at http://festivalofthefires.com/. Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a Triad of super Poems Let's celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a short collection of poems (not recipes!) and all of our good wishes for the Next Year. We do so with a very small celebration for St Patrick's Day on March 17th. We bring you three poems that are typically Irish - they deal with Harps, Shamrocks and St. Patrick's Birthday! Email [email protected], or leave us a message using Speakpipe The Legend of Ireland's Magic Harp This beautiful and magical poem, sadly of author unknown, makes a lovely start to our show. The original can be found on Old Irish Poems and Dizzy Boy. We did find a reference on liceogilvaniu.it that attributes it to (Carlo Calzolari, 3^B internaz.) - but we're not sure what that means. The Four-Leaved Shamrock by Samuel Lover Samuel Lover (February 24, 1797 Dublin – July 6, 1868) was an Irish songwriter, novelist, as well as a painter of portraits, chiefly miniatures. He was the grandfather of Victor Herbert. Samuel was born at number 60 Grafton Street and went to school at Samuel Whyte's at 79 Grafton Street, now home to Bewley's cafe. By 1830 he was secretary of the Royal Hibernian Academy and lived at number 9 D'Olier Street. Lover produced a number of Irish songs, of which several — including The Angel's Whisper, Molly Bawn, and The Four-leaved Shamrock — attained great popularity. This short biography came from Wikipedia and the poem itself from Old Irish Poems. St Patrick's Birthday by Samuel Lover Saint Patrick (Latin: Sanctus Patricius, Irish: Naomh Pádraig) (c. 387 – 17 March, 493;) was a Romanized-Celt, a Romano-Briton and Christian missionary, who is the most generally recognised patron saint of Ireland (although Brigid of Kildare and Colmcille are also formally patron saints). By the eighth century he had come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland. The Irish monastery system evolved after the time of Patrick and the Irish church did not develop the diocesan model that Patrick and the other early missionaries had tried to establish. Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig) is a yearly holiday celebrated on 17 March. It is named after Saint Patrick (circa AD 387–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. It began as a purely Catholic holiday and became an official feast day in the early 1600s. However, it has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland's culture. For more information, check out the Wiki entries for Saint Patrick and St. Patrick's Day and the poem itself from Old Irish Poems. Shaman Spirit Reindeer of Siberia by the Magic Folk Magicfolk produce a traditional and modern blend of folk, celtic, prog and rock, writing original and alluring songs with mythological and mystic leanings. They also love their roots with fiery fiddles and pipes, and will sometimes burst into traditional reels and jigs on stage. They continue to absorb new influences, including traditional sounds along the lines of Capercaille, prog-rock timings in the style of Dream Theater, or world music influences such as Greek or South American drum rhythms. Grounded in acoustic instrumentation, their songs often develop into raucous rock, jazz and psychedelic improvisations. They also have gentle songs which take you to other more restful places. Evans-Wentz Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz (February 2, 1878 – July 17, 1965) was an anthropologist and writer who was a pioneer in the study of Tibetan Buddhism. He was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and as a teenager read Madame Blavatsky's Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine and became interested in the teachings of Theosophy. He received both his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University, where he studied with William James and William Butler Yeats. He then studied Celtic mythology and folklore at Jesus College, Oxford (1907); there he adopted the form Evans-Wentz for his name. This is one of the most in-depth and scholarly attempts to explain the phenomena of the Celtic belief in fairies. Based on Evans-Wentz' Oxford doctoral thesis, it includes an extensive survey of the literature from many different perspectives, including folk-lore, history, anthropology and psychology. The heart of the book is the ethnographic fieldwork conducted by Evans-Wentz, an invaluable snapshot of the fairy belief system taken just on the cusp of modernity. There are regional surveys of the fairy-faith in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Brittany and the Isle of Man. You can read the whole text on Sacred Texts. Armorica We also mention 'Armorica' and wonder whether this is meant to be America or some part of Brittany. From Wiki, we learn that Armorica or Aremorica is the name given in ancient times to the part of Gaul that includes the Brittany peninsula and the territory between the Seine and Loire rivers, extending inland to an indeterminate point and down the Atlantic coast. The toponym is based on the Gaulish phrase are-mori "on/at [the] sea", made into the Gaulish place name Aremorica (*are-mor-ika ) "Place by the Sea". The suffix -ika was first used to create adjectival forms and then, names (See regions as Pays d'Ouche Laoch Sidhe by Phil Holland A Celtic harpist/singer/songwriter, Phil Holland has performed all over Europe as a soloist. We also send our deepest sympathies to Tee Morris and put a call out for Philippa Ballantine's Appeal to support him. La Belle Dame Sans Merci by John Keats John Keats (1 October 1795 – 23 February 1821) was an English poet who became one of the key figures of the Romantic movement. Along with Lord Byron and Percy Byshe Shelley, Keats was one of the second generation of Romantic poets. During his short life, his work was not well received by critics, but his posthumous influence on poets such as Alfred Tennyson and Wilfred Owen was significant. The poetry of Keats was characterised by elaborate word choice and sensual imagery, most notably in a series of odes which remain among the most popular poems in English literature. The letters of Keats, which include the development of his aesthetic theory of negative capability, are among the most celebrated by any English poet. Visions of the Cailleach by Sorita d'Este and David Rankine Standing astride the British landscape, looms the giant blue form of the Cailleach. Whether she is seen as a benevolent earth-shaping giantess, harsh winter hag goddess, shape-shifting crone, guardian of sacred wells and animals, or ancient bestower of sovereignty; the Cailleach appears in many roles and manifestations in myths and legends across the British Isles. Tracking the Cailleach across thousands of years through folklore, literature and place names, the authors have uncovered startling references which hint at a hidden priestess cult worshipping the Cailleach from ancient times through into the twentieth century. By exploring her myths and legends, they demonstrate the hugely significant role of the Cailleach in the early history of the British Isles. Beinn na Caillich and Goir a' Bhlair - the seat of the Cailleach Looking beyond the veil of the sacred landscape, the vision of the Cailleach confronts the seeker, in hills and rocks, lakes and wells, burial chambers and stormy skies. Now finally the primal elemental power of the Cailleach is revealed in her full glory, in the tales and places of Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man; as well as in traces of her presence in England, Wales, Jersey, Brittany, Spain and Norway. For more details about the book visit the Avalonia site or you can buy the book on Amazon. The Pattern by Willson & McKee The Pattern is a poem that Kim wrote after her first trip to Ireland and hearing about the myths and legends of the Women knitting a pattern in her husband and sons sweaters to identify them if they were lost at sea and then recovered later. Arthurian Special - The Ladies of the Grail This is the Autumn Equinox Holiday Special, and we're also bringing you (in association with Druidcast and Damh the Bard), a special Lecture by Prof. Dr. Roland Rotherham on "The Ladies of the Grail". Dr Rotherham is an acknowledged expert and scholar in the legends of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. In this wonderful talk he revels how the ladies of the Grail have considerably more importance in the legends than the Knights themselves! Not a talk to be missed! In typical Celtic fashion, he explains how the Grail is one of *three* items of great importance and reveals that the origins of the Grail Legends may be a lot older than previously thought. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable but also an extremely entertaining lecturer. We round off the show with three pieces of Arthurian music and gratefully pass our thanks on to Damh and Dr. Rotherham for their respective permissions to use this material. We hope you enjoy this treat as much as we did. Her CD's, Lady Moon and I Walk with the Goddess are being recognized around the globe as a must have for any lover of Goddess inspired folk music. Her live shows are a combination of acoustic guitar songs and chants to the God and Goddess. "Morgana was created after I read Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon" for the third time. The lyrics were completed upon my return from the Ancient Isle of Avalon in Glastonbury, England. Being in Avalon and on the Tor, I could easily imagine Morgan losing her way in the mists and traveling to the Fairy World. She was strong and always emerged from the magical realm to her beloved Avalon." You can find out more about Kellianna on her website or on her Contributor Page. Many A Knight by Kim Thomsett Urban Dryad Kim Thompsett is a musician and songwriter living and working in the South East of England. She plays guitar, flute, native American flute and zither. Her songs have an escapist quality which evokes the England of old with hints of Celtic, medieval and the classic folk artists of the '60's and 70's. This song, Many a Knight, is from her debut album, Urban Dryad which can be heard on last.fm. Her latest superb album is Songs from the Uglee Meadow. The album title is inspired by a serene and beautiful place in East Sussex called the Uglee Meadow. The album features musicians such as Will Summers from Circulus on recorders, flutes and crumhorn and Philip Martin (alias Drohne) on hurdy gurdy. You can find out all about Kim on her website or her Contributor Page on our site. The Ladies of the Grail by Prof. Dr. Roland Rotherham Dr Roland Rotherham B.A.hons, M.A, Ph.D., Ed.D, M.I.H.G.S. holds degrees in Ancient and Medieval studies, Anglo-Saxon Culture, Heraldry, Anglo-Norman Culture, Ancient and Medieval Cultural Studies, and Education. He is a member of the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, and The Fellowship Of The Knights Of The Round Table Of King Arthur. He says: Many people are aware of the legends relating to this relic and its importance in the "Quest" but the actual story regarding the possible origin of The Grail is as complex as the legends that surround it. Firstly we can look at the Celtic Grail with its dark mysticism and the stories of the cauldron of Annwn, a magical vessel that belonged to the mythical Giant/King Bran The Blessed, this was one of the earliest legends and tells us of a great cauldron that, if a dead warrior was placed into it at the end of a day he would rise again in the morning live and well but without the power of speech. There also exists a tale of the Celtic Cauldron of Knowledge, one taste from this vessel and all wisdom past, present, and future is the gift of the tasters, this also links with the tale of Taliesin. You can find out more about the Professor on his Contributor Page. The Winter King by Damh the Bard Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. You can find Damh's music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. Paul has had a recent bereavement and we send our love out to him. At the Edge of the Cornish Sea by David Helfand David Helfand composes and performs original and traditional music on Celtic Harp, mandocello, guitar, keyboards and percussion. Many of David's compositions were born through improvisation and drawn on the inspiration found in the power of music from many wondrous cultures. "As I returned from my maiden voyage from the land of Britain full of awe, unspeakable joy and deep reservoirs of inspiration, slowly the music started to speak. From the high craggy cliffs where the ruins of Tintagel castle lay overlooking the dark waters off Cornwall's shore, to the ancient majestic ruins of Glastonbury Abbey and the dark mysteries of the Tower of London, the swirling maze of the city's streets and the magic of the standing stones on Salisbury Plain, I swam deep in the waters of imagination. Shortly after returning home and embarking on creating "At the Edge of the Cornish Sea", I soon shared with the world, dark grief and immense sadness as the two towers crumbled to the earth creating its deep grave of shattered lives and dreams. What once seemed important became insignificant against the dark clouds of sorrow." You can find out more about David on his website or on our Contributor Page. Lughnasadh Scant records remain of the ancient Celtic religion, beyond some eleventh- and twelfth-century written material from the Irish Celts and the great Welsh document Mabinogion. This classic study by a distinguished scholar, first published in 1911, builds not only upon the valuable hints supplied by the surviving texts but also upon the still-extant folk customs derived from the rituals of the old cults. A masterly and extremely readable survey, it offers a reconstruction of the essentials of Celtic paganism. The Celt is portrayed as a seeker after God who links himself by strong ties to the unseen, eagerly attempting to conquer the unknown by religious rite and magic art. The earliest aspect of Celtic religion lies in the culture of nature spirits and of life manifested in nature, and this book offers fascinating glimpses into primitive forms of worship, depicting Celtic rites centred on rivers and wells, trees and plants, and animals. The Druids maintained an optimistic view of the afterlife, and the author presents the subject from the comparative point of view, drawing upon evidence from Celtic burial mounds to elaborate upon ancient beliefs and customs related to the culture of the dead, including rites of rebirth and transmigration. Unabridged republication of the edition published by Constable and Company Limited, 1911. S2 Ep 17CMP029 There and Back Again

Saga of Manannan, Part 3 and end of the Irish Mythological Cycle This is the third and final part in the Saga of Manannan which contains two stories. The first, the Tale of Laogaire, tells of a visit of a great warrior to the Realm of the Undying who given the chance refuses to return to Erin. The second tale, the Tale of Tadg and the Three Duns or Castles tells the tale of the voyage of Tadg amongst Manannan's Islands and his encounter with the three great Halls in the Many-Coloured Land. This is also the last episode in the Irish Mythological Cycle and the tale of Tadg rounds off the tale by returning our vision back to Four Islands in the Otherworld, perhaps the very same islands from which the Tuatha De Danaan came from to settle the land of Erin. Promo - Genesis Avalon "Genesis Avalon" is a full-cast, fantasy maxi-series serial drama. Like a lot of kids who grew up in the 1990s, I grew up with shows like X-Men, Batman: The Animated Series, Superman, Justice League, and Spider-man. As a child of the 90's though, I also grew up with a totally different form of the superhero in the form of anime. From the boys of Gundam, to the seven warriors of Suzaku in Fushigi Yuugi, to even (dare I say it) Sailor Moon, I had been able to see two different kinds of heroes. The kinds with capes and gadgets (Or alien powers), and the kind whose mystical powers governed their duties and how they fight. So I decided I would take the mythology I loved the most and apply it to a superhero. Thus came Genesis Avalon. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed writing and directing it. "The Storyteller - This was the first new song written by myself in quite a while and the foundation of this whole project. The inspiration came back in August '08 while at the annual Artemis Gathering where I finally got to see Damh The Bard perform. It was such a wonderful experience and I was caught up in the music and stories he had to tell. When I arrived home on the Sunday evening I lifted my guitar and very quickly the Storyteller was written." To find out more about Willo's Song go to their Myspace Page or visit the Contributor Page. We have been running a poll to find out which direction you would like us to take the show in the future - would you like us to continue with Irish Mythology, move on to Welsh Mythology, Arthurian or one of the other strains of Celtic Mythology? We are so really privileged that you have answered with your mouse clicks and we have had 985 votes! Wow, thank you so much. To confirm the results - 3rd Place - Arthurian Myth with 19% of the votes 2nd Place - The Ulster Cycle with 36.1% of the votes 1st Place - Welsh Mythology with 37.9% of the votes So after this Irish Mythological Cycle draws to a close, we will start to present Welsh Mythology for you. You can find the shop on Cafe Press or from the Non-profit Shop link in the menu to the left. We have set this up with no profit margin - the price you see is the price Cafe Press charge. Rocks of Rodel by Kiss The Mistress Kiss The Mistress was formed 18 months ago and in that time has moved from folk club floor spots to main act bookings. Their debut CD About Time, released on the 20th March 2009 is already receiving rave reviews and their CD launch at the famous Cambridge Folk Club a fantastic night, attended and enjoyed greatly by an appreciative audience who had traveled from across the Eastern region to attend. You can find out more details about Kiss The Mistress on their website or on their Contributor Page on our website. Beltane: Its History and Modern Celebration by Rowan Moonstone You'll find the original article for this question and answer session on Sacred Texts. Banks of Newfoundland by Bote Bote is a group of 4, sometimes 5, musicians who are striving to bring the maritime sea shanty scene to the southern USA where it is relatively unheard of. We play anything from original numbers about the ocean, love, heartache, or just plain good times, to the traditional folk tunes of the Celtic nations that focus primarily on the salt sea. We have a set list of over 30 songs we play live and selected the best 15 songs for our first album. Whether you're a Celtic music fan or not there is still something for your ears in Work and Worry. Whether it's the funky acoustic pop "All Day Long" or the Bob Dyaln-esque "Whiskey in the Jar", to the harder rocking "Drunken Sailor" or "Star of the County Down", there is more than just irish pub music to be heard here. You can find out more about Bote on their Contributor Page. Ivor and the White Adder by Andy Guthrie We are incredibly privileged to have Andy as a Contributor to the show. He tells stories that are alive in his family today and that have come down through the ages. He says: The old Legends are a passion and a Joy, and the writings of Fiona Macleod are inspiration, in all I do. I have been a Head gardener of 31 years for large house, and sill working, I see the years come and go from spring to winner, and love it all. I retell the old stories. You can read more about Andy on his Myspace page or on our Contributor Page. The Celtic World Revisited by Cindy Spear This poem was inspired by the journey of the Celts. Of course, the place for me of greatest interest is Ireland where many Celts landed. I have included a photo I took in N. Ireland of a very mystical place where there were circles of stones and other interesting rock formations. Published in The New Brunswick Reader July 1, '95. England born Chris, as well as Jim and Derrek like to enjoy ourselves, and like to get everybody around us to have a fun time, but we also are very dedicated musicians. We have our regular drummer Don (Otto) Wilson out with us on most occasions also. We are truly passionate about the music. We are also very grateful for our family and friends, who come out or support us in many different ways. Cernunnos & the Gundestrup Cauldron The Gundestrup cauldron is a richly decorated silver vessel, thought to date from between 200 BC and 300 AD, or more narrowly between 150 BC and 1 BC. This places it within the late La Tène period or early Roman Iron Age. The cauldron is the largest known example of European Iron Age silver work. For more information, consult the Wiki page for the Cauldron. The Witch-God Cernunnos by Sorita D'Este This anthology is the first of its kind to be focused on the horned gods of our ancestors and includes both scholarly essays, bardic retellings of stories such as that of Herne the Hunter and a number of experiential essays. Invocations and meditation journeys are also included. The piece we bring you from this wonderful book is about the Celtic God Cernunnos and was written by the book's editor, the talented Sorita D'Este. Brighid: The Triple Goddess of the Celtic Irish by Patricia Monaghan An avid traveler, Patricia has researched earth spirituality and goddess worship on three continents. She has traveled widely in Europe, especially in Ireland; she holds dual US/Irish citizenship and has edited two anthologies of contemporary Irish-American writing. She is at work on an Encyclopedia of Celtic mythology and folklore as well as a book of poems based on Irish myth. Here we have an excerpt from Goddesses and Heroines about the Goddess of Imbolg, Brighid. You can read more about Patricia on her website or her Contributor Page. Lyonesse by Brocc Brocc came into being over the summer of 2008 - a product of gales and rain in the woods and a badger who came to stay and has become our symbol. The songs this group weaves tells tales of myth and legend and the old beliefs of our lands and peoples. We embody the history of this land ... and we want to give something back. Our music is timeless, evocative of earlier, simpler times. The instruments reflect our love of forgotten timbres - we play english & swedish bagpipes, woodwinds and recorders, the medieval hurdy-gurdy, mandola and bandurria, and a host of percussion. This is our offering............... You can find out more details about Brocc on Myspace or on their Contributor Page on our website. Anait, Queen of the Shee in Alba by Andy Guthrie We are incredibly privileged to have Andy as a Contributor to the show. Scarborough Fair by Skully Skully has graciouslly allowed us to play his rousing version of Scarborough Fair from his album Irish Makeover. The vocals on this track are by Annette Buckley. "These are songs that have been performed and sung for generations", says Skully, "from the sean-nos singer beside a fire in an old thatched cottage to grand orchestrated versions, these songs have been passed down through the years". You can find out more details about Skully on Myspace or on their Contributor Page on our website. The news from the Gauls is that the Romans plan to invade the Britannic Isles, once they have conquered Gaul. A force must be sent to Gaul to help them in a great battle, to drive the Romans Out. But there are traitors at home, who must be dealt with quickly. But which tribe are they? What is their plan? Will Diarmid and his friends be brave enough to face these trials? Mr Monaghan's Magical Faery Dust by Faeries Wear Boots Born just weeks apart, with a mutual love of all things dark, gothic, shiny, folky, and fae, it was inevitable that Chrissie and Polly would eventually come together to form Faeries Wear Boots, a modern melting-pot of the darker elements of British and Irish folk music and lore with pretty tunes, driving beats, and of course, very big boots. Soon they were joined by Chrissie's father, Andrew, and (when he wasn't busy being a rock star) her brother Robby and the Faeries Wear Boots line up was complete... Described by one festival organizer as 'faeries with attitude', Faeries Wear Boots continue to go from strength to strength as they win over audiences with their captivating tunes and fantastical faerie attire. ... Already Faeries Wear Boots have been asked to support Scottish songstress Isla Sinclair, and have played alongside Pagan-Folk and Faery artists such as Omnia, Daughters of Gaia, The Dolmen, Wendy Rule and Elfin Spiral. You can find out more details about Faeries Wear Boots on their Website or on their Contributor Page on our website. Long Lankin by Tinkerscuss Tinkerscuss are sisters Erin and Bryony Holden who live in the north Gloucestershire village of Bourton-on-the-Water. They are renowned for songs that are dark and eerie along with the more traditional 'Celtic' pieces. The combination of Bryony's rich, resonant vocals and Erin's modal guitar style will enthral, bespell and wrap the listener in the mists of myth and legend. You can find out more details about Tinkerscuss on Myspace or on their Contributor Page on our website. Perfect by Triflemore Sometimes the impractical makes perfect sense… From the very first tune and lyric they combined, Triflemore knew they were on to something that fit. Though choosing to start a collaboration with an entire ocean in the way, meant even small tasks would require extra effort. It also meant having to challenge any existing theories that having to be in the same room is a pre-requisite to good songwriting. And well, many have been shocked to discover that their first album, Words from Notes, a haunting, well-intertwined voice and guitar duet, was written and recorded without ever having met in person. The impractical was achieved by using technology to deliver back and forth the ideas of two souls from two very different places. Susan Rhea, from small-town America, and Owen Goudie from the Shetland Islands, found their inherent differences irrelevant to the ability to seamlessly blend their musical thoughts. The result is a contemplation of emotions that create themes which are relevant to us all in our own way. By searching for tunes and lyrics to enlighten their own hearts, they've happened upon a way to make a difference by creating songs to briefly open windows that let us peer in behind the joys and often lingering sorrows of a life. In their song Goudfield, the question is asked "What would you say if words would last?" Triflemore will continue to answer this with each new song that finds it's way into their hearts. This is their life's journey. And, you could say, that as they continue to overcome the obstacles that the distance places before them, the impractical has become something they have learned to embrace because to them, nothing has ever made more sense….. You can find out more about Triflemore on their website or our Contributor page. Mairi

Lords & Ladies by Kim Thompsett Kim Thompsett is a musician and songwriter living and working in the South East of England. She plays guitar, flute, native American flute and zither. Her songs have an escapist quality which evokes the England of old with hints of Celtic, medieval and the classic folk artists of the '60's and 70's. The album Songs from the Uglee Meadow is due for release on 30th November 2008. The album title is inspired by a serene and beautiful place in East Sussex called the Uglee Meadow. You can find out more about Kim on Myspace, last.fm or our Contributor Page. Ogma's Lament by Dr. Joe Christopher We wrongly ascribe this wonderful sonnet to Professor Joe Christopher instead of the Doctor Joe Christopher in the show. Apologies for this! Joe Christopher of Tarleton, Texas, author of 'C. S. Lewis', Twayne English Authors Series, writes - 'I don't know that the enclosed sonnet is appropriate for the C. S. Lewis Newsletter, for the Church of Ireland may have doubts about a work that has only one brief allusion to Lewis's Christianity and is otherwise pagan. Further, the sonnet has one weak rhyme and certainly counts on a reader having knowledge of Irish legend (for the argument by analogy in the last tercet) and Irish myth. On the other hand, it certainly ties to Ulster!' Find out more about Joe Christopher on our Contributor page. [Source] The Standing Stone by The Bards of Mystic William, the Captain of the Bards of Mystic, says: I was inspired to write that one after personally wandering through the fields of standing stones in Carnac, as well as visiting many dozens of sites throughout north western France. Find out more about the Bards of Mystic on Myspace. More details will also be found on our Contributor Page. Priestess of the Forest by Ellen Evert Hopman This tale is set in third century Ireland where Christianity is sweeping across the Celtic Isles. The book recreates the daily life, magical practices, politics and spiritual lives of the Ancient Celts during this historic turning point. During this time of crisis, love blooms between Ethne, a Druid healer, and her patient, a Fennid warrior. Their passionate affair suffers a tragic blow when Ethne is called upon to become the High Queen. The section we bring to you comes at the beginning of the tale after Ruadh is gored by a boar and becomes the patient of the enigmatic Ethne. Promo - The Fox The Fox The Fox is a historical novel that contains adventure, ancient Celtic beliefs, sacrifice, love of family, ancient and modern culture, and divorce. Have you ever wondered who your ancestors were? How did they live? How did they die? Most of us do. Genealogy is a huge business. Curiosity about our bloodlines, our past, makes us want to go back as far as possible. But, genealogy can only go back as far as there are written records. What if you had a chance to find a connection to ancient roots? To someone who lived two thousand years ago? Proof you could touch and hold in your hand? Aine Macrea has that chance. She is the archaeologist who is on the search for a vision. Jahna has come to her and lead her to discoveries. In The Fox, you will follow the lives of Jahna and Lovern, two people who lived in what is now Scotland, during the time of the invading Romans. The Romans threatened Jahna and Lovern, their clan and most importantly, the life of their child. They struggled to find a way to stop the coming invasion and in doing so, left traces of their lives. Aine is working to rebuild her career and is led by instinct, or a vision (or is it a ghost?) to a hilltop in Scotland. That dignity bears a price, for Lin has drawn the wrath of Modred, the youngest prince of Orkney. His single-minded quest to break strong-willed Lin--by any means necessary--nearly succeeds. Although accustomed to the death, disease, rape and famine that runs rampant in the slave hovel she calls home, it is when her beloved brother Dafydd is placed on the auction block that her warrior spirit becomes apparent to all who challenge her, and the shocking secret of her lineage is finally revealed. You can find out more about Karen on her website or our Contributor page. A Druid's Herbal of Sacred Tree Medicine by Ellen Evert Hopman The Druids used the ancient Ogham Tree Alphabet to work magic and honor the dead, surrounding each letter with medicinal and spiritual lore. Poets and bards created a secret sign language to describe the letters, each of which is named for a tree or a plant. For centuries this language was transmitted only orally in order to protect its secrets. Combining her extensive herbal knowledge and keen poetic insight, Ellen Evert Hopman delves deeply into the historic allusions and associations of each of the 20 letters of the Ogham Tree Alphabet. She also examines Native American healing methods for possible clues to the way ancient Europeans may have used these trees as healing agents. Druidic spiritual practices, herbal healing remedies, and plant lore are included for each tree in the alphabet as well as how each is used in traditional rituals such as the Celtic Fire Festivals and other celebrations. Hopman also includes a pronunciation guide for the oghams and information on the divinatory meanings associated with each tree. Yeats W. B. Yeats William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and dramatist, and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and English literary establishments, in his later years Yeats served as an Irish Senator for two terms. He was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival, and together with Lady Gregory and Edward Martyn founded the Abbey Theatre, and served as its chief during its early years. In 1923, he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation;" and he was the first Irishman so honored. Maud Gonne Originally published in the Weekly Critical Review on 4th June 1903, The Rider from the North was later called The Happy Townland. This poem was read from In The Seven Woods which can be found at Sacred Texts, subtitled Being poems chiefly of the Irish Heroic Age. Light by Sora Sora (aka Andrea Hunt) is an independent musician with a different philosophy on how she wants to share her music with the world. Perhaps it was all of the touring she did as a teenager with the Calgary Youth Orchestra and the Calgary Fiddlers that made her appreciate the subtleties of having a solid home base. It may have been the influence of playing with elite musicians and performing to sell out crowds that seeded her desire to mold a new musical lifestyle. Her natural flair for Celtic vocal styling leaps out in her 2003 debut CD "Winds Of Change". On this self produced project all 13 tracks were recorded live off the floor. "What you hear is what we did" Sora says. "Everyone was in the same small room at the same time". The arrangements for each song were chosen specifically because they were so different from anything she had ever heard – which gave her the chance to put her heart and sound into each track. You can find her music on Myspace or Corvid Media. You can find out more details about Sora on her Contributor Page on our website. The Meester Stoorworm by Katherine Pyle A Scottish folk tale from a collection of tales by Katherine Pyle and illustrated by herself. The most complete bibliography for Katherine Pyle we have found is here. This book can be found on Project Gutenberg or Many Books. Morgana by Kellianna Kellianna is an accomplished musician and performer worldwide. Her CD's , Lady Moon and I Walk with the Goddess are being recognized around the globe as a must have for any lover of Goddess inspired folk music. The track she has given us permission to play is called Morgana, and you can find the lyrics on her site. The lyrics were completed upon my return from the Ancient Isle of Avalon in Glastonbury, England. Being in Avalon and on the Tor, I co

Music, facts, and a story for Lughnasadh 2008 It's always great to hear from you! Email [email protected], or call us using Speakpipe Show Summary: We've got some great stuff for this Holiday Special. For the first time, we've got three pieces of fantastic music, a section from an unpublished book about the Celtic traditions for Lughnasadh and a great section of an Arthurian Fantasy by Kelley Heckart: White Rose of Avalon. More resources over at our main Website at http://celticmythpodshow.com Running Order: Intro 0:41 News & Views 1:39 Kesh Jig by The Connemara Stone Company 4:46 Lughnasadh: The Land Gives Birth by Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson 6:26 Lughnasadh by Damh the Bard 21:30 White Rose of Avalon by Kelley Heckart 26:45 Warrior Queen by Kellianna 40:10 Promo - Billibub Baddings 44:54 Promo - Digital Magic 46:20 Outtakes 49:52 We hope you enjoy it! Gary & Ruthie x x x News & Views We discuss news that listener Jason tells us about - new stone circle in Australia and a similar one being constructed near us, at Knockhatch. The Australian Standing Stones began as an ambitious project by a small, dedicated group of citizens who wanted to mark Glen Innes's Celtic heritage. It was in Australia's 1988 Bicentenary Year that the Celtic Council of Australia developed the idea of erecting a national monument to honour all Celtic peoples who helped pioneer Australia. Glen Innes responded with a 46-page submission for Australian Standing Stones, inspired by the Ring of Brodgar in Scotland's Orkneys. Australian Standing Stones Alignment Details Sussex Peace Circle Peace Stones the Out of the Ordinary Festival Kesh Jig by The Connemara Stone Company The Connemara Stone Company have been together since 1995, and all played previously in various Folk-Rock Groups, which is soon obvious when you see them live on stage. Right from the start they decided to rearrange Traditional Celtic music into modern Folk-Rock songs and tunes. Apart from that, it was very important to them to bring Folk music to the younger generation. To their surprise not only did the younger generation like their music. This was more as apparent as they played a concert with "Wishbone Ash", the audience being (putting it mildly) a little bit older. They have kindly given us permission to play a wonderful piece of foot-tapping music, called the Kesh Jig from their album, Birds & Beasts. See the Myspace page and hear more music or visit their homepage, Connemara Stone. Lughnasadh: The Land Gives Birth by Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson Shae Clancy and Francine Nicholson have collected essays from Celtic scholars to form a fascinating book that helps to explain the difference between Celtic fact (what we actually know) from Celtic fiction (what we speculate). Sadly, the book has never been published and Francine passed away in 2003. Shae has enabled the book to be published on the web. Francine Nicholson, M.A., was a librarian in New England and scholar of all things Celtic. The loss of her passing, perhaps appropriately on 1 February 2003 (Imbolc), is poignantly crystallised by fellow Celtic scholar, David Stifter: 'It is very sad news to hear that Francine Nicholson has left us. She had a vast and astounding erudition and knowledge of Celtic mythology and folklore, and her contributions . . . were a great source of enrichment and information. I feel it as a heavy loss that she will no longer contribute to our discussions.' Lughnasadh by Damh the Bard Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. Damh is a musical storyteller who works within the world of myth that cannot be proved; where the Faerie really do dance on Midsummer's Eve, where the trees talk, and the Hollow Hills take you into the realms of Annwn. Where the Goddess rides her horse, guiding you to magic, and the Horned God of old calls us from the shadows of the Greenwood. You can find his music on iTunes, Woven Wheat Whispers or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. You can find Druidcast here and find out more about OBOD here. We'd like to thank him for giving us permission to play this track for you. You can find out more details about Damh on his Contributor page on this website. White Rose of Avalon by Kelley Heckart Kelley Heckart lives in Arizona with her husband, Michael, and their two dogs, Hercules and Xena. Kelley was born with a vivid imagination and a fascination with ancient history and the supernatural. Though she resides on the earthly realm, she always has one foot firmly planted in the otherworldly realm of mystical creatur

Midsummer 2008 with a story from William Russeth Always great to hear from you! Email [email protected], or call us using Speakpipe More resources over at our main Website at http://celticmythpodshow.com Show Summary: We celebrate the Midsummer Festival with a massive offering of goodies. The second half contains an amazing poem called The Shadow House of Lugh, a story from The Fire of Belenus by William Russeth and some music. Running Order: Intro 0:40 News & Views 1:37 The Shadow House of Lugh by Ethna Carberry 2:50 The Fires of Belenus by William Russeth 6:07 Tuttle Caislean an Oir by Cady Finlayson 33:03 Listener Feedback 36:01 Outtakes 39:34 We hope you enjoy it! Gary & Ruthie x x x News & Views We talk about Stonehenge's new visitor centre and the Cerne Abbas giant's new haircut! The Shadow House of Lugh by Ethna Carberry This poem is a translation of an 8th Century Irish verse. It was translated by Ethna Carberry and published in Padraic Colum's (1881–1972) Anthology of Irish Verse, 1922. Lugh is the Celtic divinity whose name is most widely known. In mythology he is the Sun God. In the mythological cycle he is the deliverer of the De Danaans from the Fomorian oppression. He is the slayer of Balor, the glance of whose eye is death. But Lugh is also kin to Balor, his mother being Eithlinn, the daughter whom Balor had immured like Danae in a tower. There are actually another two verses to this poem, but the version we found and recorded didn't have them. So here are the extra two verses for your pleasure. This version can be found at Bartleby's. He plays for her soothing the Slumber-song: Fine and faint as any dream it glides along: She sleeps until the magic of his kiss shall rouse; And all her world is quiet in the Shadow-house. His days glide to night, and his nights glide to day: With circling of the amber mead, and feasting gay; In the yellow of her hair his dreams lie curled, And her arms make the rim of his rainbow world. The Fires of Belenus by William Russeth A thousand years before the Romans, Celtic people cultivated the Rhone Valley. Celtic languages were spoken from Asia Minor to Spain and from Northern Italy to Ireland. By the third century BC, their culture had evolved into a complex civilization with sophisticated social structures, laws, and folklore that are the roots of modern European culture. But the Celtic world was a violent world, controlled by mystical Druids and warrior chieftains, ready to take the heads of their rivals over the most trifling insult. Fires of Belenus is a romantic tale, that tantalizes readers with rational portrayals of mythical events found in the CuChulainn and Arthurian legends. Written by William Russeth, the chapter we read is exciting and contains wonderful symbology. Many, many thanks to William for allowing us to present Chapter Thirty-Six. The Sword in the Stone, Lady of Lake, and CuChulainn's stand at the river ford are brought to life in plausible new ways that make the work unique. It is a tale of Historical Fantasy, made believable by accurately portraying ancient Celtic culture. Available from Wings Press and Amazon. Find out more about William in our Contributor pages. Tuttle Caislean an Oir by Cady Finlayson Called "one of America's top Celtic fiddlers" by New Age Voice magazine and "bursting with pure and natural talent" by HotIndieNews.com, Cady Finlayson offers a spirited fiddle show with a global twist. Cady's music blends traditional Irish tunes with worldbeat rhythms and American folk, creating a signature sound that appeals to a variety of audiences. "I love to bring Irish music to people who might not normally hear it," she says. "I was in Limerick, Ireland in 2003, where I had the chance to meet some of the great Irish fiddle players. What impressed me the most was how individual each person's style was, and how "tradition" meant different things to different people." Music, stories, and facts for Midsummer 2008 Always great to hear from you! Email [email protected], or call us using Speakpipe More resources over at our main Website at http://celticmythpodshow.com Show Summary: We celebrate the Midsummer Festival with a massive offering of goodies. So we've divided the episode into two parts. The first part contains a reading from The Religion of the Ancient Celts, another from a modern book called Fairy Healing, some music, and a story by Willie Meikle called The First Silkie. Running Order: Intro 0:40 News & Views 1:32 The Religion of the Ancient Celts by J.A. MacCulloch 7:08 Fairy Healing by Margie McArthur 10:01 Shimmering Wings by Gaelic Wind Project 15:02 The First Silkie by Willie Meikle 21:27 The Ladychant 31:15 The Summer Solstice 34:01 Outtakes 35:34 We hope you enjoy it! Gary & Ruthie x x x News & Views We talk about Midsummer being celebrated on the 20th, 21st or 22nd of June. Midsummer is traditionally a time for fairies - although it is dangerous to visit the fairy world at this time! We talk about the Solstice and time that the sun appears to wobble in its 'apparent' orbit around the earth. The Religion of the Ancient Celts by J. A. MacCulloch We select a passage concerning the Midsummer rituals from the Religions of the Ancient Celts by J. A. MacCulloch. This book, which appears for the first time on the Internet at Sacred Texts, is one of the earliest scholarly treatments of the ancient Celtic religion. Written early in the 20th Century, Religion of the Ancient Celts includes extensive treatment of that perennially fascinating subject, the Druids. MacCulloch details the Celtic belief in reincarnation and a spectral otherworld; documents the enormous pantheon of now-obscure gods and goddesses, including many local deities; and describes totemistic and animistic beliefs. In addition, MacCulloch does not flinch (nor sensationalize) when describing the darker side of Celtic practices, including the famous 'Burning Man' human sacrifices, cannibalism and exogamous incest. Fairy Healing: the Lore and Legacy by Margie McArthur We then present a small section of a modern book about Fairy Healing: The Lore and Legacy written by Margie McArthur. The section we read is from Chapter 5: The Irish Traditions and tells us about the Fairy Doctor. Thank you to Margie for allowing us to read this for you. She has her home on the web at Brigid's Hearth where you can find out about this and her other books. She also runs a fairy healing website. Find out more about Margie McArthur in our Contributor pages. Shimmering Wings by Gaelic Wind Project They hail from Essen, Germany. Yet the repertoire of Gaelic Wind Project consists of Irish traditional songs and tunes, but they also perform their own material. This Irish folk band consists of two female lead vocalists who are accompanied by Irish wooden flute, accordion, guitar, Irish bouzouki and percussion. Gaelic Wind Project is a nice addition to any Celtic music collection. "Our new song Shimmering Wings is inspired by Juliet Marillier´s novel Daughter of the Forest. Here you´ll find more information about the author and her books." You can find the Gaelic Wind Project on the web at their homesite (now sadly gone). You can also find them on CD Baby. The First Silkie by Willie Meikle Willie Meikle is a Scottish Author who writes Fantasy and Horror Fiction and has eight books published. Many of his stories and books are set in Scotland and are weaved with Mythology and folklore. Willie has had 130 stories published in the genre press, both in paper and on-line magazines and his work has appeared in the UK, Ireland, the USA, India, Greece, Romania and Canada. He has graciously allowed us to present an except from his novel, The Midnight Eye Files: The Sirens and concerns the origins of the Silkie – a fey creature able to shift from seal to human form. The tale tells us of the origin of the Silkie which concerns Viking Gods, Bold Fishermen and a wager between Gods and Men. You can find out more about Willie and his work at his website or you can read more details about this fantastic author in our Contributor pages. The Ladychant by Gary, Ruthie & friends With thanks to three young friends of ours, we present our very unprofessional (but fun!) version of the Chant of the Lady. A big Thank You to Stacey, Tania and Jessica. You can download this chant from us by clicking Ladychant. Lyrics Lady, spin your Circle bright, Weave your web of dark and light. Kathy from the US has solved Ruth's question about Leeks and the Welsh by finding a quote from the Sacred Texts website. She also found the following quotes from Henry V (Shakespeare):- FLUELLEN Your majesty says very true: if your majesties is remembered of it, the Welshmen did good service in a garden where leeks did grow, wearVing leeks in their Monmouth caps; which, your majesty know, to this hour is an honourable badge of the service; and I do believe your majesty takes no scorn to wear the leek upon Saint Tavy's day. KING HENRY V I wear it for a memorable honour; For I am Welsh, you know, good countryman. Hutchins invited the most prominent storytellers in podcast fiction — and 7th Son fans across the globe — to contribute to 7th Son: Obsidian, an innovative audio and video fiction anthology set in the 7th Son universe. Obsidian, an innovative "in world" addition to the 7th Son trilogy, tells the tale of the nationwide blackout seen briefly in 7th Son: Destruction. More than 100 authors and fans contributed content to this project. Obsidian was a history-making experience; it was the first time in podcast fiction where the lines between author and audience were fundamentally blurred in this way. While these tales of survival were crafted as stand-alone stories, J.C. Hutchins recommends listening to the 7th Son trilogy in its entirety before experiencing Obsidian. Gary & Ruthie x x x News & Views We talk about the beauty of the season and explain that this episode is about an hour long being a special episode. We reassure new listeners that the normal episodes are only 25 minutes long. We also play a Promo for Mary Jones, whose amazing website provides much of the source material that we use in bringing you these stories: www.maryjones.us. The May Festival by Lady Wilde from "Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms, and Superstitions of Ireland" We start with a brief biography of Lady Francesca 'Speranza' Wilde, who was born in 1821 and was the mother of the famous Oscar Wilde. We then read a section of her book, Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms, and Superstitions of Ireland about May Day festivities and beliefs. Memorial to Lady Wilde and her husband located in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin The Hills They Are Hollow by Damh the Bard Perhaps one of our all-time favourite tracks based in Celtic Mythology by Damh the Bard. You can find out more details about Damh on his Contributor Page on our website. Castledore, 23 AD by Simon Mitchell from "Secrets of the Valley 1: The Lily" We start with a short biography of Simon Mitchell, whom we know as Simon the Scribe, a regular contributor to our website. We introduce to his ecologically based work and to Secrets of the Valley book 1: The Lily. We then read Chapter 2 to you to introduce you to the story. We'd like to give Simon special thanks for his permission to bring you this story and, if you enjoyed it, urge you to read his book. Secrets of the Valley, a Cornish trilogy. An ancient matrix of energy lies hidden in the earth, its existence and purpose all but forgotten. One strand, named 'The Dragon Line' passes through Cornwall, a land steeped in history and mystery since the dawn of time. Here the line passes through the valley of the River Fowey. A lone ghost, abandoned in the valley of his birth, tells how the line of energy has been usurped, unbalancing the whole planetary energy matrix. In 'The Lily', the first novel of this extraordinary trilogy, we share his lives as he tells his tale of 2000 years in the Fowey valley. He sets a crucial task, to mend the Dragon Line and restore the balance of power, before time itself runs out. About the author - Simon Mitchell is part of the 'green wave' working in Cornwall UK. " I find an authentic and meaningful life by researching, writing and publishing my own, and other people's media, on the themes of sustainable living, nature and ecology. This trilogy of books under the heading of 'Secrets of the Valley' celebrates the wonders of nature in providing us with all we need." [source] You can find out more about Simon. Some of Simon's wonderful recipes, green thoughts and other articles and advice can be found here. The Lily is now available on the kindle at a really low price - grab it now! :) Haghole by Culann's Hounds Our second musical treat for this special is the theme music to our show, 'Haghole' by the amazing San Francisco band, Culann's Hounds. Name a musical act after one of the great warriors of Irish legend, and you'd better be prepared to crank out some energetic, larger-than-life performances. That's precisely why Culann's Hounds has been a favorite on the San Francisco scene f
