#12559 Weird Questions - Jimmy Akin

Questions Covered: 02:40 – If a pagan god were to meet Jesus and convert to Christianity, would they go to heaven if they died? 13:11 – As far as I understand it, current physics tells us that information cannot travel faster than the speed of light since, if it did, you would (among other problems) get paradoxes. However, it seems like an angel could convey information faster than light. For example, Aquinas argues that an angel, in moving from place A to place B, can choose whether it traverses the space in between those places or not. Thus, an angel could observe, say, a supernova happening lightyears away from Earth and then travel instantaneously to Earth and tell us about it before the light from the supernova got here. What do you think of this? Should we think that even an angel couldn’t convey information faster than light? Or, should we discard the idea that information can’t be communicated faster than light? Or maybe some third option? Thanks! 23:46 – Your recent episodes on demons and the different beliefs on how people get possessed made me think. Could the dark forces be targeting powerful latent “psychic” individuals? It would fit with your demons being opportunists, and with Amorth’s Curse model. I would like to see a scientific study that would test people who have been validly possessed and exorcised to see if they test higher than a sample group. 35:22 – In the case of Ash Wednesday when fasting and abstinence is required, would receiving communion break one’s fast or count as a smaller meal? In other words, can one receive communion in addition to eating one full meal and two smaller meals? Thanks Jimmy! 39:16 – Let’s say we made contact with an alternate timeline whose divergence point is after the year 100. They have a recognizable continuing Petrine ministry. Does their pope (probably called something else) have immediate and universal jurisdiction in our timeline, and ours in theirs? Are we bound by each other’s infallible declarations of doctrine if we’ve defined something they haven’t, or vice versa? 46:12 – Do stage magicians have actual preternatural gifts?

“How is Jesus present in the Eucharist?” This question opens a discussion on the nature of Christ’s presence in the sacrament, addressing concerns about cannibalism and the essence of communion. Other topics include the implications for Anglicans considering Catholicism and the differing beliefs about the Eucharist among Protestants. Join the Catholic Answers Live Club Newsletter Invite our apologists to speak at your parish! Visit Catholicanswersspeakers.com Questions Covered: 03:24 – How is Jesus present in the eucharist? 15:37 – How is the Eucharist not cannibalism? I find that typically the answer is: it’s not cannibalism because it’s not destructive. My problem with that is destructiveness is not inherent in the definition of cannibalism. Cannibalism is eating another person, which is what we are doing. Did we just invent another definition for cannibalism so that we can say we aren’t doing it? 29:59 – I grew up Anglican and am looking into Catholicism. I go to Anglican service with my Grandma. If I believe in the Catholic view of the Eucharist, but I’m not Catholic, should I stop receiving communion in the Anglican church? I’m worried how my grandma would react to that. 35:24 – Do Protestants who believe in some kind of eucharistic presence not really have the Real Presence because they don’t have the Catholic sacramental priesthood? 45:20 – How is it that the Eucharist is really Jesus when most Protestants believe it’s just a symbol? 49:16 – If Christ wanted to ensure belief in the Eucharist he chose an almost maximally ambiguous form, why do you think God allowed that ambiguity instead of clarity?

He also explores the power of the Rosary for the salvation of others, the roles of Eve and Mary, and how the saints truly intercede for us in prayer. Listeners also hear answers on contraception and moral reasoning, the fate of those who die without knowing God, the authority to forgive sins, Christ’s fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, God’s justice, and whether annihilationism is compatible with Catholic teaching. Visit Catholicanswersspeakers.com Questions Covered: 03:10 – Making suffering meaningful 16:41 – The biggest hurdle trying to convince people of the pro-life argument, that is that human life is innately valuable, is apathy. I find that people either A) don’t care that the child in the womb is a life, and/or B) people don’t think there’s adequate authority to tell others “how they should live their life”. What is the best argument against apathy? Or this false view of infringing on someone’s individual liberty? 24:30 – Are there any saints you have a strong devotion to? 29:24 – If you notice others around you, be it coworkers, friends, acquaintances, etc., talking about their anti-Catholic beliefs, what is your obligation to say something in defense of the Catholic Church? Is it necessarily a sin of omission to not confront the person saying such things? Can you share some tips for what to say if you decide to confront the person? 34:32 – I have a friend who is a Protestant who told me that the Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed recited by Catholics is in “error” because scripture claims that only Jesus Christ is the Creator, not God the Father. His comment is “Show me the Father who died on the cross for my sins if I’m wrong” which in my view he seems to be denying the Trinity but he claims he isn’t – says that Catholics are incorrect and that scripture backs up his claims. Can you help me respond to him? 43:35 – Hi Trent! Sometimes I feel that I get too deep in the online apologetic world and am wanting to disconnect a little bit. What prudential or practical advice would you give for disconnecting from the online world and building a better habit for spiritual practices like prayer and reading scripture? I often struggle to take the time to pray or read the Gospel, but will spend a lot of time online engaging in apologetic content. Thank you for all you do and I hope this has been a restful week for you and your family! 48:11 – Can you clarify the Church position on cremation for us?
