In his youth, Michael was diagnosed with testicular cancer and underwent surgery. Later he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour below his heart. He underwent chemotherapy but many years later was diagnosed with mastocytosis, a rare disease that is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of mast cells on the skin, bone marrow and internal organs along with a drop in blood pressure which results in attacks that, at times, leave him unconscious.
