It was one of the largest planned non-nuclear explosions in history to that point, but when 1.2 tons of explosives were used to blast 635,000 tons of rock to pieces, it made the Seymour Narrows a lot safer for ships. For over 100 years, Ripple Rock had caused hundreds of shipwrecks.
