Rabih (Robby) Alkhalil was in prison for one murder and on trial for another. Then on July 21st, 2022 Alkhalil slipped into a black jumpsuit and a high visibility vest and he walked out the front door of a BC prison. He hopped into a waiting white van and disappeared. And for the last three years Alkhalil has stayed, at least, one step ahead of the law.Alkhalil made new headlines last week. A series of news reports claimed he'd been arrested in Qatar. The RCMP scheduled a press conference and promised an update on the case. Then something weird happened. The RCMP announced that three men had been charged in connection with helping Alkhalil escape, but the RCMP would neither confirm nor deny that he was arrested in Qatar.Was his escape the most audacious in recent Canadian history? Mark Carney recently made noises about the future possibility of Canadian boots on the ground as part of an international “coalition of the willing” to help guarantee security in Ukraine. In the 1990s Canada had up to 3,000 peacekeepers around the world at any given time. Today we have less than 30. Pierre Poilievre won his byelection and will be returning to Parliament in September. He’s raring to go, and probably drafting a whole bunch of new catchphrases and slogans. He’s back and ready to try and convince conservatives he’s the right man for the job.But, in the media, the picture being painted is a little less clear. In July, Mark Carney made it clear to public workers that there would be a tightening of the belt. Ministers were told to save 15% from their departmental budgets over the next three years. Canada is now the number one provider of medical assistance in dying in the world per capita. The latest stats, from 2023, show that MAID accounted for almost 5% of all deaths in Canada, or around 15,000 people in that year. And it’s only been legal since 2016.MAID was introduced for patients who were experiencing intolerable suffering, irreversible decline and whose death was foreseeable. Within a few years it was expanded to cover people who are not close to death but who are living with chronic illness or disabilities and facing intolerable suffering.Canada’s number one spot on the global stage and the expansion of MAID eligibility has attracted the attention of the United Nations. The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities issued a report that raised questions about access to housing, social support, and healthcare, especially for people with disabilities. Emily Grey’s been living with a condition known as PSSD for six years now. PSSD can lead to the effective erasure of a person's sexual sensation and functioning.The SSRIs that seem to be at the heart of this condition are selective serotonin uptake inhibitors, a group of antidepressant drugs that have been around for decades. The latest numbers indicate that nearly 20% of Canadian women and 10% of Canadian men are now taking these drugs. It is generally known that potential side effects include a loss of libido. But what we're talking about today and what advocates like Emily have been saying for years is that the side effects can be very extreme. They might persist even after you stop taking SSRIs.We'll also be speaking with Dr. David Healy, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Cardiff in Wales. Dr. Healy has been involved in SSRI research for decades.
