  • Closely review social media pages ahead of time for clues
  • Use media monitoring to learn about recent events that may have impacted the person or organization
  • Ask people in your network who are connected to the people or company for their take
  • Research the trends in the industry sector, educate yourself on what’s impacting them
  • Look into background, upbringing, professional experiences, shared experiences -- these are clues!
  • Make no assumptions about anything
  • Use progressing questions - reference HBR article on continuous learning…
  • Prepare relevant examples to support your points - relevant is the key - examples increase understanding, engagement and connection
