Ep 79EP 79 A "Tactical" Mystery: The Unsolved Murder of Missy Bevers

E

On the Monday morning of April 18th, 2016, a handful of bleary-eyed fitness students filed into the Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian TX just before 5am—expecting to find their trainer Missy Bevers and her array of workout equipment ready to whip them into shape. But instead, they encountered a scene that could have been straight out of an episode of Law & Order. 45 year old Missy Bevers was lying unresponsive on the floor in a pool of blood. Terrible wounds covered her chest and head and shattered glass was scattered all around her. No one else was in sight. And just like that, the perceived bubble of safety over the sleepy town of Midlothian was destroyed forever. It’s been nearly a decade since that morning, and police and armchair detectives alike have torn their hair out looking for the one piece of evidence that would finally lead them to a killer. There’s been a slew of theories, red herrings, internet gossip & bone-chilling surveillance footage—and don’t worry, we’ll be getting into it all today. This is a case that Kaitlyn and I both spiraled on long before we ever had our own true crime podcast—and if you’re not familiar with this case—sorry, you’re definitely about to spiral too. Ep 76EP 76 "A Sinister Unknown: The Dyatlov Pass Backpacking Disaster" PART II

E

This is PART II of our two-parter on the Dyatlov Pass Incident, so if you’re just tuning in; do yourself a favor and listen to Part I first. We’re going to jump right back in where we left off–which was March of 1959. 9 young hikers never made it home from a carefully planned backpacking trip deep in the heart of Russia’s Ural Mountains…under increasingly odd circumstances. Searchers had located four of their bodies several hundred yards away from their abandoned tent—without shoes or coats–but 5 hikers were still missing, and every day that passed made the search feel bleaker. Once more into the heart of frozen mountains and Soviet Russian conspiracies we go. Ep 75EP 75 "A Sinister Unknown: The Dyatlov Pass Backpacking Disaster" PART I

The year: 1959....the place: frozen Siberian mountainswhen 22 year old university student Zinaida Kolmogoriva, (who went by Zina), sat scribbling away in her diary while snow flurries zipped against the window of her train car. Eight of her very best friends in the world (and a friendly newcomer named Sasha) sat bundled up around her, and everyone was buzzing with excitement. They were all part of the most accomplished hiking club at Sverdlovsk’s Ural Polytechnic Institute in Russia, and they had spent months carefully preparing to take on their biggest adventure yet. A hike…..covering one. hundred. and. eighty . six. miles. of rugged, sparsely habited terrain deep in the heart of the Ural Mountains…. in the dead of winter. As in—they were expected to encounter negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit dead. You campers can already guess how we’d feel about such a trip based on the title of this podcast—but for this close-knit group of adventurers, it meant that if they successfully completed this hike–they would be awarded the highest hiking certification in Russia as “Masters of Sport”. And this group was well on their way–everyone was very experienced in mountaineering and their group leader, 23 year old Igor Dyatlov, had meticulously prepared them for anything the mountains might throw their way. Or so he thought. Because what took place 10 days into the group’s hike was so horrific, and so…bizarre…that nearly 70 years later— “stumped” is still the best word even the most studied experts have when trying to determine what the hell happened in that frozen wilderness. Oh, there are theories—and don’t you worry, we’ll be getting into all of them today. But to truly believe any of them, you might have to admit that sometimes there are things in this world we just can’t rationally explain.Back in the train car in 1959, Zina smiled at her friends hugging their massive trail backpacks and singing songs together to pass the time, and she wrote in her diary: “I wonder what awaits us in this hike?” This is Episode 75: PART 1 of The 1959 Dyatlov Pass Disaster.Lights Out Campers.SOURCES:book: "Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident" by Donnie Eichar

Ep 74EP 74 "The Submarine Case: The Murder of Swedish Journalist Kim Wall" PART II

E

Lies.....lies.....and more lies. This is PART II of our coverage of The Submarine Case: The Murder of Swedish Journalist Kim Wall. Make sure you go back and listen to Part 1 first, Episode 73—if you’re joining us for the first time. If you’ve already listened to it, you should have a pretty strong picture by now of Peter Madsen—the eccentric inventor who managed to break the sound barrier with a homemade rocket, and enjoyed loaning his submarines out to the porn film industry for reasons only the dark lord must know. Gen: praise Satan When we left you in Part I, things had gone south hard with Peter’s business partner at Copenhagen Suborbitals, so he’d taken up shop nextdoor—literally—and had taken a small group of young interns under his wing who were eager to be a part of Rocket Madsen’s dreams of submarines and space travel. He also had a secret obsession with actual snuff films of women being beheaded and tortured—but as of this point in our story, no one knew that yet.Lights Out Campers.SOURCES:Netflix DOC "Into the Deep: The Submarine Murder Case", directed by Emma Sullivanhttps://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-40911387https://archive.ph/20141119103447/http://adastra.systems/#selection-141.0-141.76https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/peter-madsen-guilty-verdict-leaves-lingering-questions-and-painhttps://theweek.com/92441/peter-madsen-trial-kim-wall-submarine-murderhttps://www.theguardian.com/global/2018/jan/07/copenhagen-killing-peter-madsen-kim-wall-murder-submarinehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Madsenhttps://www.avisen.dk/forfatter-peter-madsen-fandt-sin-far-doed-og-vendte_467524.aspxhttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/25/world/europe/peter-madsen-kim-wall-convicted.html https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/column-journalist-kim-walls-wit-shone-through-her-work-and-lifehttps://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/10/07/556345889/swedish-journalist-kim-wall-s-severed-head-found-in-copenhagen-bay

Ep 73EP 73 "The Submarine Case: The Murder of Swedish Journalist Kim Wall" PART I

E

Back in 2016, the world was stunned when an award-winning 30 year old journalist named Kim Wall boarded a submarine built by celebrity-status Danish inventor Peter Madsen, for an evening dive in the waters Copenhagen and an in-depth interview. Kim Wall would never be seen alive again, and the eventual breaking news of her death would send shock waves all over the world. How could a true sadistic psychopath have been hiding in plain sight for years? Who was the real Peter Madsen beneath the disarming boyish-charm of a groundbreaking rocket science inventor? And most importantly.... who was Kim Wall--because she was so much more than a victim. Over the next couple weeks, we're going to do our best to break down this story in a way that scratches our true crime itch to dive into deep into the pathology of a perpetrator but, most importantly, keeps Kim Wall and her ongoing legacy as a fearless journalist and beloved daughter and friend in the center. Ep 70EP 70 "The Bloodiest 47 Acres In America": The Dungeon Survival of JB Johnson PART II

E

If you don't like to think about having to eat a rat raw.....or not seeing the sky for 18 years.... might not be the story for you. Just to jog your memory, we spent EPISODE 68 doing a deep-dive into the very morbid history of one of the US’s oldest and most infamous prisons—the Missouri State Penitentiary—and we ended with a promise to give you the full scoop on one of the most gripping survival stories from one of its inmates that we’ve ever encountered. Definitely go listen to Part 1 if you haven’t but just as a quick refresher; this story begins in the year 1882 when unlucky thief JB Johnson decided that he couldn’t bear to spend one more day sharing one tiny cell and a poop bucket with 12 other men. So, he and a few like-minded buddies swung for the fences and made a dramatic escape attempt that dramatically failed. Since the Mo Pen had a reputation for being a place where a prisoner could be whipped within a millimeter of his life for simply speaking during meal time….it will come as no shock that JB now found himself—for lack of a better phrase—utterly fucked. In the prison’s (insert number of years) lifespan, JB would be the only man who would spend more years in solitary confinement than any other inmate in recorded prison history and live to tell his story. So. Take a deep breath of fresh air and one last glance at the sky before we must follow JB Johnson down, down, down into the dungeon of the Missouri State Penitentiary. Ep 67EP 67 "Glitches in the Matrix": Unexplainable Happenings That Made Folks Question Their Reality

Today we’re taking a bit of a turn from our typical trail of true crime and once again scraping the barrel of the internet for stories that leave us going what in the actual hell is this world we live in? Don’t get us wrong–we love the rules of forensic science and a justice system doing its job well— we need that certainty to pick up the pieces of the constant chaos caused by shitty human behavior and we’ll never stop obsessing over it. But sometimes things do happen to people with no rhyme or reason that seem to defy the laws we learn about in grade school: like the laws of time or space or someone appearing in one place while also standing in another. The most relatable example we can think of from pop culture was the 1999 movie The Matrix—where (sorry, spoiler alert) Humanity is living in a software simulation of reality called “the matrix”. This software glitches sometimes and creates visuals that seem odd or unexplainable. And there’s more people out there than you might think who believe this concept in the movie is not just made up for a fun film experience. At some point or another, we’ve all made a comment about experiencing “a glitch in the Matrix”--but for the folks who took the time to share their tales on Reddit today, that glitch was more than a joke. You’ll have to tell us what you think in the end–but for now, let’s get glitchy. Ep 66EP 66 "Oh, Sh*t....": The Bizarre Vanishing of Brandon Swanson.

We're diving into a mystery that has stumped law enforcement and internet sleuths alike for almost 20 years. In 2008, loving parents Annette and Brian Swanson were talking on the phone with their 19 year old son Brandon after a minor car accident–and they’d been on the phone for the better part of an hour, when Brain suddenly stopped responding even though the call was still running. So they hung up & called him back, but the phone just rang and rang until it went to voicemail. Every other call they made—voicemail. And in that moment, Brandon’s parents Annette and Brian had no idea that they were at the start of every parent’s worst nightmare—and that those would be the last words that they ever spoke to their son. Today we’re going to tell you campers everything we know about the facts and the theories for one of the most bizarre missing persons we've ever come across. Ep 65EP 65 "So He Decked the Halls....with ACTUAL Human Face-Masks": The Terrible True Story of Ed Gein.

E

CONSIDER THIS YOUR NO-EATING WARNINGIt's as American as apple pie for every small town to have a house that local children whisper is haunted and full of unspeakable horrors–a house that they dare each other to run up and touch without getting snatched and boiled in a cauldron. But everyone knows these houses aren’t really real…..they’re just stories that kids tell to spook each other and adults might chuckle over. But when it comes to the house we have to tell you about today— the one in Plainfield Wisconsin that slowly sunk into a state of disrepair after all but one of its family members had died—and the person who lived there: odd but friendly bachelor Eddie Gein—the truth about the horrors behind its walls turned out to be far more terrifying than any ghost story ever whispered about it. This is the true account of the man, the dark myth, the madman legend, who walked alone through the halls of his mother’s beloved home so that the likes of horror film icons Norman Bates and Leatherface could run. And welcome finally, to the long awaited conclusion, the ending; the dramatic wild west tale of Skidmore Missouri and its infamous bully, Ken Rex Mcelroy. If you’ve made it this far with us, you know Ken has lots of hobbies: like stealing livestock and terrorizing people with guns and knives; and let’s not forget his personal favorite–grooming 13 year old girls the second they start 8th grade to get them to marry him and have his babies. By the time Ken started waiting outside the Nodaway County grade school to pick up 13year old Trena Wood, he had this pattern down pat. Ep 63EP 63 "Well...They Blew Him Away" PART II: The True Story of a Town That Got Away With Murder

E

Welcome back, Campers! Here we are once again, diving into the unhinged wild west-esque tale of Ken Rex Mcelroy and Skidmore Missouri: The Town That Got Away With Murder. This is DEFINITELY going to be a three parter—and here’s why. When we first started researching this case, we thought Skidmore’s situation was going to be a case of tough lessons learned—where people took the law in their own hands, and nothing good came of it. But the deeper we dug into the decades of terror countless individuals endured at the hands of Ken Mcelroy–and the constant failing of the law enforcement system to protect them, maybe we aren’t finding ourselves so quick to judge anymore.Perhaps you guys will disagree, but please give us these next two episodes to wait and see where you end up. If you haven’t listened to Part 1–that would be episode 61–what are you even doing–go do that now or this episode will be pointless. Ep 62EP 62 BOOTY-CLENCHING TALES: "Doppelgangers: WTF Are They & Why Does Everyone & Their Brother Have An Encounter With One?"

E

For this week’s episode…we’re going to do a deep dive into a supernatural phenomenon that seems to be much more common than we ever realized—and possibly far. more. sinister: Doppelgangers. The other, more psychology-y friendly term for it is the idea of “bilocation”, where a person somehow projects an image, or “body-double”, of themselves in a secondary location, and that double is actually able to interact with people around them. We know, it still sounds pretty woo-woo. Our minds can certainly play tricks on us, especially when we’re running low on sleep and high on anxiety (orrrr high for other reasons). And usually, who or what we thought we saw can be logically explained away. But sometimes—it just can’t. There were gasps of terror AND gasping for air from laughing so hard during this all-new installment of Booty-Clenching Tales. E

We're leanin' into Spooky Season HARD with this one. In the mid 1960’s…..at the height of acclaimed paranormal expert Han's Holzer's career, he was contacted by a young stay at home mom named Carole Trausch who had just moved with her husband and three young daughters into a new house in California. She thought Hanz might be the only person left who could help her, because a strange child wouldn't stop disturbing her daughter's bedroom and waking them up at night. Seems like that should be simple enough—but the problem with this particular child was that it seemed to have already been at the house long before its new family had moved in. Ep 58EP 58 "The Woman Who Solved Her Own Murder": the Astonishing True Story of The Greenbriar Ghost

E

On a freezing winter afternoon in 1896 the small Appalachian foothills town of Greenbriar County...a young boy named Andy Jones came by to offer his neighbor (22 year old newlywed Zona Heaster Shue) help with gathering eggs. Instead, he found a harrowing trail of blood and Zona lying dead as a doornail on the floor of her dining room. All types of hell broke loose. This case has it all..."out-of-wedlock" hanky-panky, a handsome grieving widower, a pattern of mysteriously dead wives, secret pregnancies, body exhuming, courtroom drama, an angry mob, damn good investigative work, Gen & Kait's wild speculation....a ghost, and a badass mother/daughter team who refused to let a real POS get away with murder. If you aren't curious about what the folks in the tiny Appalachian town of Greenbriar County were getting up to in the late 1800's....or the possibility of the paranormal.....best move right along. In today's episode, we dive deep into the only recorded instance in American courtroom history where a ghost encounter was directly responsible for swaying a jury beyond reasonable doubt to convict a murderer.WELCOME TO OUR BELOVED SPOOOOKY SEASON!!!!(& lights out campers)SOURCES:https://www.gothichorrorstories.com/gothic-travel/the-death-resurrection-and-retribution-of-zona-heaster-shue-the-greenbrier-ghost/https://wvexplorer.com/2024/01/20/greenbrier-ghost-zona-heaster-shue-west-virginia-wv/https://westvirginiahauntsandlegends.com/Greenbrier_Ghost.htmhttps://www.greenbrierhistorical.org/blog/the-greenbrier-ghost-reexamined

Ep 52EP 52 "The Fabric Is Thin Here": The Bizarre Moberly-Jourdain Time-Travel Incident

E

In 1901, two English scholars (who were also friends) named Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain loved visiting historical sights together, and on August 10th, they decided to go on holiday to Versailles. They expected to spend a pleasant but otherwise uneventful day wandering the halls and grounds of the spectacular palace. But–about a week after they returned home, they realized that they’d both had an experience there that neither of them could explain and…the more they talked about it, the more the hair on the backs of their necks prickled, and the more they became convinced that somehow, for a few hours, they’d unwittingly stumbled through a rip in the fabric of time that was torn in a history–altering event marked by fear and terror. According to Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain, the story you’re about to hear, whether you choose to believe it or not, is true. Their deaths left behind an unimaginable wound of grief and loss for their community, and have forced us to take a good hard look at how and why this tragedy happened. TW: this episode contains discussions of disordered eating. The bizarre disappearance of 21-year-old nursing student Maura Murray from a New Hampshire highway in February 2004 has become one of the most infamous cold cases in the true crime world. It’s a story that's been told over and over, and with every re-telling, a little bit more of Maura's humanity felt stripped away in favor of wild speculation and salacious gossip. Theories of what could have possibly happened to her ranged from slightly reaching to downright outrageous. Ep 41EP41 "A Pickled Torso & A Mother's Intuition": Unhinged 1800's Murder Tales From Jolly Old England

E

In 1947, a huge collection of true crime stories from many of the extremely popular "murder pamphlets" floating around Victorian England were published in an Anthology called “The Fatal Caress…& Other Accounts of English Murders from 1551 to 1888”. We’ve decided today to bring you a few of these stories just as they appear in the Fatal Caress…and perhaps make you feel like you’ve picked up a murder pamphlet hot off the press in Victorian England while Jack the Ripper lurked behind every corner. Be warned though…while we find it super interesting to hear about a crime exactly as it was written in the past, many of these stories are likely to make your blood boil because they provide painfully clear depictions of the horrible attitudes towards women, race, and class that were prevalent for hundreds of years–and still linger in how we handle crime investigations and the legal system to this day. That being said, we believe by identifying these attitudes and calling them out together (and don’t worry, we do as we read these stories); we can get better at recognizing & rejecting them on our own. Ep 38EP38 "A K-Mart Exorcism": the Incredible Survival Story of Margy Palm

E

Before this episode, we had never even heard of Stephen Morin, or as law enforcement would eventually dub him: "The Chameleon Killer". He would completely change his "look" and his name, hopping from state to state and preying upon as many as 48 victims before he was finally apprehended in December 1981. While fleeing San Antonio police for a murder he'd committed that morning, he made the decision to abduct a 32-year-old woman name Margy Palm at gunpoint in her own SUV from a KMart parking lot. If his previous MO was any indicator of her likely fate, things looked pretty grim for Margy.
