Ep 120E-71 Coupar quits
The wild summer lead up to the municipal elections continues!John Coupar quits the race for mayor following another bad poll for him.The Vancouver Plan passes, with plenty of amendments, including an amended amendment that drew the ire of Black Vancouverites.A Kitsilano social housing complex also passed, also after 300 speakers. But the controversy played a part in the decision to quit by BC Housing's CEO.We also know how little Port Coquitlam will save by leaving the LMLGA, which doesn't really explain why they left.Dan Fumano exposes that Lululemon founder Chip Wilson is rallying BC's elite to stop socialism. There seems to be a connection between this new group and Views of Vancouver, who continue to spend significantly on ads in Vancouver.Vancouver's Fire Chief ordered the urgent removal of tents along Hastings, which is already postponed.Ken Sim backtracks on ABC's plan to abolish the Parks Board.VOTE Socialist announces its candidates and platform, including 50c transit.Green candidate Zahra Esmail quits the race for Parks following pressure from the province.Surrey is heating up with Sukh Daliwhal and Gordie Hogg entering the race for mayor.Rob Vagramov won't seek re-election in Port Moody, leading Councillor Steve Milani to announce his bid for mayor.Drum circles are the latest threat to public safety. And the Park Board is chaos with meetings adjourned, ruled changed, staff speaking out, Points of Privilege over liking tweets and commissioners blocking one another. In our Vancouveratta we look at dowtown beaches.

Ep 119E-93 Not a sleepy summer
It's been ten days since we recorded and yet so much has happened.Peter Meiszner got owned on Twitter.Michael Wiebe got owned by the Court of Appeal (read the ruling) but he might still bring us a new Vancouver Special. The VDLC nominate one more - but notably not one of their own - while Port Coquitlam mysteriously quits its local government association. The Surrey SkyTrain business case is approved, including lots of housing. Our beach logs are still in jail and council snubbed a proposed pool for Mount Pleasant.A new shadow group is advertising on Facebook, as pre-election disclosure rules are about to kick in.More reddit analysis of voting trends of City Council. In nomination news, Mike Klassen joins ABC, Nigel Malkin announces for West Van Council (despite not registering his party) and Haven Lubrieki announces for Port Moody Council.New Westminster considers being a bit less Royal, in the spirit of reconciliation, which is getting called out by at least one Indigenous activist. The president of TEAM resigns when he realizes what the party is about. The Fountainhead Pub gets to expand after council rejects staff recommendations. And in our Vancouveratta, go see Matthew slinging beers at the Vancouver Folk Festival.

Ep 118E-103 Eternal hearings
Your biweekly municipal politics podcast is back for its monthly episode.Broadway passes and now we're into our next marathon public hearing, with another on the docket. It's so much they've postponed another until after the election. In election news though, the VDLC has announced (most of) their endorsements, and Forward Together and the NPA have council slates. In Burnaby, a new challenger - for council - emerges. While in Coquitlam there will not be a byelection. And in Surrey, debates about flags. Finally, the barge is being disassembled, as might some pristine farmland. And in our Vancouveratta, we recognize Mr Richmond. We rushed the edit on this one folks, so enjoy a looser Cambie Report as we try to catch up on some sleep to get back in the virtual studio in a couple weeks.LinksVancouver city council approves Broadway Plan after long debate | CBC NewsBroadway Plan approved by Council | City of VancouverControversial Kitsilano social and supportive housing project heads to city council | Globalnews.caBill Tieleman argues semantics about public hearingsBroadway-Commercial hearings postponedBackground: Revision downsizes Safeway redevelopment proposal at Commercial-Broadway Station | UrbanizedJust-released plan, concept sketches show what Vancouver's future looks likeMetro Vancouver's $21-billion transit plan, which includes a gondola to SFU, approved VDLC Endorses Municipal CandidatesOur Team - Forward Together VancouverNPA names candidates for 2022 civic election, signals it will be tough on crime | UrbanizedCandidates - Non Partisan Association VancouverCoun Mike Hillman launches centrist One Burnaby municipal partyOne BurnabyQuestion asked of Doug McCallumPHOTOS: Surrey Pride takes over Central City PlazaMayoral candidate Jinny Sims says it's time to raise the Pride flag at Surrey City Hall | Georgia Straight Vancouver's News & Entertainment WeeklyJudge tosses byelection petition for Coquitlam - Tri-City NewsEnglish Bay barge won't be chilling much longer as long-awaited removal begins this week | CBC NewsThis Surrey field produces millions of vegetables for B.C. Ep 112E-303 Mayor Kennedy Stewart
We speak to Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart about his first three years in office and how he's setting up for his re-election bid next year.

Ep 111E-316 That's not how budgets should be considered tow work
Can Vancouver square the circles of it's budget?Staff have presented their budget to council calling for a 5% property tax hike, which translates to ten bucks a month for the average homeowner. And while many departments face cuts, the police think their increase is actually a decrease (math is hard) and want more. They need not fear though, because the mayor is not "anti-cop."Mayor Kennedy Stewart is also eager to further raise your taxes to fund the climate plan, which he earlier killed a funding mechanism for. Maybe the rest will come from his deja vu housing plan.Ken Sim also has a plan to address permit backlogs, which will totally not lead to abuse or staff revolt.Vancouver looks at building more homes around Renfrew and Rupert SkyTrains, while Burnaby struggles with a few townhomes by BCIT. But things are brighter in Surrey - or at least they will be once staff sanitize their housing needs report.Download the Alertable App if you live in Vancouver.Nick Lauga, Iona Bonamis and Jada Natalie Stevens join the growing list of people wanting to run for OneCity. And the hits don't stop for the tiny home on the tiny lot.In this week's Vancouveratta: The Canada Post Building.

Ep 110E-327 What in particular is wrong with Vancouver?
Floods. Keep up with the latest from the Fraser Valley Current.Vancouver loves public hearings. A lot. So much that they've spent four meetings already discussing a proposal to streamline rentals along arterials. Unsurprisingly, those writing in opposition live in rich areas.Vacancy controls are coming to SROs though with only one councillor opposed.Laneway houses make neighbouring properties more affordable.Surrey police referendum is a no go, as Elections BC laughs in their face. And the Mayor and RCMP continue to fight a war of words. Two new candidates are putting their names forward for OneCity's council slate, including Bobo Eyrich and Ian Cromwell. The new Vancouver Art Gallery scores a $100 million donation, which still leaves them hundreds of millions from their goal. And the Park Board considers rebuilding two outdoor pools. And for Vancouveratta, learn about Sumas Lake from the Fraser Valley Current, Abby News and Vancouvertraces. Or just read Chad Reimer's Before We Lost the Lake.Photo credit: Wikimedia/Adam Jones

Ep 109E-351 True hopes for False Creek
The False Creek South plan, carefully crafted and presented by city staff, has been unanimously sent back to the drawing board by council. But maybe it's for the better.Yes is now Progress and everyone was there for the launch. The Vancouver Plan is getting rave reviews despite only being at the survey stage (but do answer that survey).North Shore mayors agree on transit. The Province proposes changes to support development.Local man wants to sue city over not being consulted enough. And Pitt Meadows council is delayed by local anti-maskers, which seemingly includes one councillor. And in Vancouveratta we look at the "False" in False Creek, and when it got a bit smaller.Image via Wikimedia/Wpcpey

Ep 104E-386 Coyote railways
We survived the federal election where nothing happened so we can turn our attention fully toward the upcoming municipal elections but first perhaps a byelection in Coquitlam. The massive cull of coyotes in Stanley Park resulted in four coyotes being "lethally removed" as well as two arrests.Vision announces a call for candidates, which draws up some interesting names but ultimately the party has been shunned by the VDLC.Pop-up patios are now permanent in Vancouver, while new provincial money wants to make sure permitting delays are not.City council is set to start meeting in a hybrid format following lobbying by Councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung. However, its advisory committees are back in person.Vancouver's Mayor had a run in at a wine store, while Surrey's Mayor is mad about (possible?) SkyTrain construction delays. Finally: Street cars remain cool, the carp are dying in Stanley Park and running for Coquitlam council is about to get incrementally harder. And in our Vancouveratta: The time we switched from driving on the left to the right.

Ep 103E-401 Stop feeding the coyotes
The province is stepping up where the Park Board failed and the coyotes of Stanley Park will soon all be dead. And in Surrey, the Mayor may or may not have started an angry confrontation that may or may not have ended with his foot being run over.Matthew calls in from Pender Island for our first post-summer episode.LinksActive trapping of coyotes in Stanley Park set to begin - BC | Globalnews.caUpdate on Stanley Park coyote cull: 'Relocation not an option' after 45 attacks, 5 on children | CTV NewsStanley Park coyote cull is result of human mismanagement: lawyer - NEWS 1130Opinion: Coyotes in Stanley Park need to be culled – immediatelyPetition created remove coyotes from Stanley Park once and for allScientist takePetition against Stanley Park coyote cull sees boost after cull announced, hits 15,500 signeesCoyote attacks: Expert says animals in Vancouver's Stanley Park exhibiting 'abnormal behaviour' Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum claims he was hit by car during confrontationSurrey Mayor Doug McCallum accused of intimidation in Elections BC complaintDeveloping: Petitioners say Surrey's Mayor threatened to have them removed from private propertyBob Mackin tweetsTents being removed from homeless camp in Vancouver parkAll-women development team advances social-housing project near Vancouver City HallThis Is What The New Pattullo Bridge Will Look Like Once CompleteCanadian Farmer Succeeds with Olives and Gives Kelp Seaweed Some of the Credit

Ep 102E-448 Wiebe walks
The conflict of interest case against Michael Wiebe is dismissed. We break down the ruling.A Better City is looking for a mayoral candidate and Surrey Connect announces theirs.Jean Swanson gives out drugs and is accused of trafficking. Perhaps the new Mount Pleasant Community Policing Centre would have intervened. And Burnaby Council cools on the Gondola. Finally in our Vancouveratta, we look at the short history of coyotes in the city and tell you who ya gonna call.

Ep 101E-466 It's a cruel, cruel summer
It was hot out. Like really hot. Like you need to sit under a tree for some shade but the damn Park Board wouldn't open the park until they finally relented.Meanwhile what do you do if you're mayor and you feel like you're not getting your way and COVID restrictions are lifting? You start a party! And accuse your opponents of being lurking Harperites. The good news for those opponents though is their own polling has them in the lead, but mostly only if you include a bunch of extra options.Meanwhile in Burnaby you can be elected to council if you can convince 3200 people to turn out for you, although you may be accused of being a lurking Conservative for your past ties to Liberals. You don't need to worry about that in West Van and you want to be mayor though. Simply promise to run lots of expensive referendums while also cutting taxes and stopping growth in the village where the population is actually declining.Back in Vancouver though some houses are actually going to be built, as council miraculously came to a unanimous vote. And with that W on the board, maybe the city should swing for the fences.Just don't use land clearing burns following a heat wave to make room for any necessary stadium

Ep 100E-486 Arborist industrial complex
Lots is happening for Vancouver's mayoral candidates. Kennedy Stewart is cleared of conflict of interest complaints but still faces a defamation suit from the NPA. Meanwhile, Mark Marissen and Ken Sim have dueling columns that both take aim at the mayor. We have polls! First, Sutherland and Globalcon released a public poll in April; you can see the charts on our Twitter timeline. And we have our hands on internal polling from the Kennedy Stewart campaign. On the climate front, council rejects staff recommendations to delay a ban on natural gas in new builds, which was allegedly supported by the natural gas lobby. Council did however agree to several other delays that would (hopefully) help clear the permitting backlog.Despite that success, council was not able to reconcile competing motions that seek to ban leaf blowers in the city and they mired themselves in procedural shenanigans. Then we take a little detour to learn about what it means to abstain as some councillors still seem confused and we look at whether the perfect is the enemy of the good. On the reconciliation front, Richmond's mayor continues making excuses to not start council meetings with a territorial acknowledgement, while Vancouver mulls taking a racist's name off one of our streets. And this week's Vancouveratta comes via TikTok.

Ep 99E-500 Cars over bikes
We begin and end with reflections on the terrible news about the bodies of the children found at the former Kamloops Residential School. Survivors, including intergenerational survivors, can access support by contacting Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society toll-free at 1-800-721-0066. 24-hour national crisis line: 1-866-925-4419. Or please donate to them at irsss.caChristine Boyle's nonprofit housing motion is defeated by an alliance of Greens and (ex-) NPA votes, who also teamed up to keep bikes off Commercial Drive pedestrian-first plans. More details emerge about the Vancouver Model for drug decriminalization, as the mayor concedes they rushed the plans in case of a snap federal election. The Park Board has helpfully highlighted the worst parts of its parks, which is where you'll be allowed to have a drink, soon.New towers might come to the north end of the Burrard Bridge and a new park on the south end.Dan Fumano looks at the city's consultation on adding density to arterials - and possibly to side streets. Add your voice: shapeyourcity.ca/rental-rzNew West gives the green light to an affordable housing project, while Surrey looks to build more roads. But both are tame compared to whatever is happening in Port Moody. Really, it's getting ugly. And in byelection news, congrats to Andy Hobbs of Richmond and Linda Munro in the District of North Vancouver . Voters in Burnaby can learn more about their candidates before voting later this month. And for our Vancouveratta we look at the St Paul's (Squamish) Indian Residential School in North Vancouver. Learn more from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. And join calls to examine all the sites.

Ep 98E-514 Finally slaying the cat democracy
Christine Boyle wants 12-storey social housing to be allowed in Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Marpole, which is “an affront to democracy”.Activists and drug users pan the proposed Vancouver Model of decriminalization. The Vancouver and New Westminster school boards give cops the boot with various levels of vigour. The province gives the absolutely all clear to the Park Board that it can allow drinking in parks, something New West is already doing and others are critical of the Mayor for not fighting harder for.People who abstain from votes continue to lack a spine. The NPA names three women to its Board, including one with some interesting tweets. We will never know the alternative measures agreed to as part of a settlement for sexual assault allegations against Port Moody Mayor Rob Vagramov.Vancouver has a new City Manager, new chief planner and Translink has a new CEO.And you could own this week's Vancouveratta for a mere $249,000.

Ep 97E-540 Hubris is the nature of municipal politics
Sarah Kirby-Yung, Lisa Dominato and Colleen Hardwick have left the NPA caucus and were soon joined in their exodus by the three NPA school board trustees. This leaves Melissa De Genova as the sole NPA member on council, with Park Board Commissioners John Coupar and Tricia Barker rounding out the party's significantly diminished caucus.Plus council votes to end public hearings for some social housing projects and Michael Wiebe's decision to declare yet another conflict prompts another edition of Charts On A Podcast! as we dive into voting records.Council may vote to support a bid to bring a Formula E race to Vancouver. And from the courts comes a ruling against a Port Coquitlam councillor who was censured for leaking information about a tree and the BC Court of Appeal reveals that city staff read from a script in rejecting the controversial 105 Keefer Project.Plus happy Earth Day (yesterday), we look at the start of Greenpeace.LinksColleen Hardwick, Lisa Dominato and Sarah Kirby-Yung leave NPA partySo now what happens to Vancouver’s NPA party?NPA school board trustees jump shipSarah Kirby-Yung's open letterThe NPA reactionVancouver NPA’s mayoral candidate responds to turmoil within partyDan Fumano: 'Baby step' or too far? Ep 86E-696 EasyParked Conflicts
Vancouver approves of the Climate Emergency Action Plan while Michael Wiebe watches from the sidelines for an alleged conflict of interest that leaves us befuddled. The Mayor has a bold plan to decriminalize drugs by writing a sternly worded letter. At the same time the Vancouver Police are keen on setting up new task forces to undermine the expressed will of Council. Surrey has its own policing issues as they are raising taxes to afford the ballooning costs. And Langley's Mayor is removed from the Metro Vancouver board by her council under a cloud of confidentiality.Topics:Climate Action Plan and general climate newsPetitionsIntrigue around recusalHow to get high and save the planetMayor tries to do Provincial and Federal Stuff (The Drugs Edition)Changing police enforcement - or notSurrey Tax IncreasesLangley mayor removed from MetroVanCovid newsVision Vancouver general meetingVancouveratta: Battle of Ballantyne PierLinksVancouver City Council approves road tolls into downtown and Central Broadway | UrbanizedClimate Emergency Action PlanPeople are already petitioning against Vancouver's plans for road tolls, mandatory parking permits | UrbanizedConflict of Interest Exceptions (City of Vancouver) RegulationCannabis greenhouse to take advantage of Delta RNG ProjectVancouver mayor introduces motion to decriminalize illicit drug possession | NewsMayor Stewart announces plan to decriminalize simple possession of drugs in VancouverJen St Denis for The Tyee Vancouver's Council Wants a New Way of Policing. Ep 85E-710 How do you count to six?
City of Vancouver staff presented a Climate Emergency Response Plan in response to council's declaration of a climate emergency. The plan pitches, among other things, congestion pricing and an end to free parking city-wide as steps to tackle emissions from vehicles in the city. For more, see Dan Fumano's article in the Vancouver Sun. Find OurTime Vancouver on Twitter.City staff also presented a Covid-19 Economic and Community Recovery Program Progress Update with some numbers on the economic hit, which has led to consideration of a property tax hike of up to 12% needed to balance City of Vancouver's 2021 budget. Hopes for the province to fill that gap were dashed this week, leaving the Vancouver mayor 'gobsmacked'. Here's Justin McElroy with details on the province's municipal funding model.Vancouver City Manager opposes council's plan to install new auditor general's office, although the motion ultimately passed unanimously as we were recording. The staff report is here.Council also opted to defer discussion of a bid for 2030 Olympics as we discussed it. Ep 84E-722 Charts on a podcast returns
Lots to catch up on in Vancouver city politics. We start off discussing the court action aims to remove Vancouver city councillor Michael Wiebe from office before turning to council's split over mandatory masks. Those splits are made apparent by an intrepid Reddit user who plotted councillors votes on the urbanist/left-right chart, which explains why Vancouver's mayor was ‘flabbergasted’ in housing plan defeat. We then look at what we learned following BC Housing being ordered to reveal details of deal to sell Little Mountain lands to developer and we take staff's side on Vancouver council's decision to approve year-round free parking for veterans over city staff objections. Finally, the Park Board killed Matthew's dreams of a new outdoor pool in Mount Pleasant. And in our Vancouveratta we look at the first Vancouverattan, Major JS Matthews. Ep 83E-749 Follow the money
We look at the Cambie Report's latest story on the $40,000 being spent on Facbeook ads by a group called BC Rental Project. A new report suggests Michael Wiebe might need to resign based on his voting for patio permits that may have benefited his business. Those calls may be a bit premature but it's quite the allegation.Mayor Kennedy Stewart has a new housing home that promises to provide homes that the middle class can afford to buy.
