In this teaching from Acts chapter 15, Pastor Harley Doneburg addresses one of the most important questions the early church ever faced: how is a person truly saved? As Paul and Barnabas return from their first missionary journey, a serious controversy arises when some believers insist that Gentile Christians must keep the law of Moses in order to be saved. What follows is a pivotal moment in church history that clarifies the gospel once and for all.
Pastor Harley walks through the Jerusalem Council, where the apostles and elders gather to examine whether salvation comes through works or through grace. Peter reminds the church that God made no distinction between Jew and Gentile, purifying hearts by faith alone. The message makes clear that adding anything to the finished work of Jesus Christ places an unbearable burden on believers and undermines the power of the cross.
This passage highlights the danger of legalism and the freedom found in the grace of God. While the law reveals God’s holiness, it also exposes humanity’s inability to measure up, pointing us to our need for a Savior. Pastor Harley emphasizes that salvation is not achieved through religious effort, tradition, or behavior, but through faith in Jesus Christ alone.
