From the publisher

Everyday we are inundated with thousands of messages promoting a way of doing business that is entrenched in toxicity. Are you as tired as I am of seeing the endless propping up of hustle culture and burnout as the only path to success? The marketing paradigms that are void of diversity, antiracism, and inclusion? The reliance on using harmful psychological triggers just to make a sale?! They want us to believe this is the only way it can be done; but I am here to tell you: that is 100% b@llsh*t! We don't need to buy into this deeply harmful and exhausting mythos of doing business. I have made it my goal in life to not only change the way I do business but to help others do the same: through community, sharing, and learning through powerful conversations. Welcome to the Business as Activism Podcast. We are going to unpack and uncover how doing business in our current paradigm is causing tremendous harm and perpetuating an unjust system. We are also going to discuss new and better ways to do business --ways that actually can result in bringing about healing and contribute to changing the world. I'm your host, Elijah Selby, Feminist Business Coach and I passionately believe that by dismantling the systems of oppression that are built into current business practices we can 100% help to make the world a more just place. So many of us are unconscious of the harmful beliefs and practices we are perpetuating. Including me. Through these conversations a whole other world and way of doing things is going to open up for you. My desire is that these conversations inspire you to do business differently so that together we can build a better workplace and a better world.

Together, we dive deep into the pressing need for feminist leaders to reclaim their power and influence in today's rapidly changing world. She passionately articulates how aligning personal values with business practices can empower solopreneurs and change-makers to not only thrive but also catalyze meaningful change in their communities. This conversation is a powerful reminder that now, more than ever, our work matters. S4 Ep 1Resistance

I have pushed the unpause button (unpushed the pause button?) and hit play again! Happy New Year. In this episode I let you know what's been going on for me in the past two years--long, dark, night of the soul stuff--and how I can feel I'm entering a season of rebirth. And it feels so freaking good. I also reflect on Trump's first term and what this next term might mean for us. Related to all this, I share about a download I received (I'm letting my Woo Flag fly!) about bringing women together the weekend after the inauguration. I have created the Resistance Retreat and I tell you a little bit about it but if you wish to know more, click the link below. Sending you all so much love. I hope you are safe--mentally, physically, and emotionally. I'd love to hear from you (DM me on Insta)! S3 Ep 15Patriarchy and Misogyny Post Election Chat with Kari Morin and Lisa Callahan

Weeks ago, I invited Kari Morin and Lisa Callahan from The Things We Know podcast to join me for a conversation about misogyny, inspired by an episode they did on the topic. Our conversation was scheduled for Thursday, November 7th, two days after the election. We knew misogyny would still be around – but we hoped we'd be celebrating a breakthrough, perhaps even the election of our nation's first female president, and a woman of color at that! Alas, as you know, that was not the case. We came to the call with grief, sadness, anger, and fear. We don't have all the answers right now. But we know this: COMING TOGETHER matters. Join us for this candid conversation as we grapple with the why and the how of it all and try to find hope and connection amidst the uncertainty. AND--entrepreneurship affects our mental health in specific ways that "regular" jobs don't. S3 Ep 12How to Use Storytelling in Your Marketing with Megan Dowd

I'm pretty sure you're going to agree that Megan is AWESOME. And yes, she seriously walks us through HOW to use story in marketing and why that is effective--more so than any other guest I've had on the podcast. Thank you, Megan! But we also talk about soooooo many other juicy things. We dig into the thing we see often--people talking about income in order to sell their programs. We look at Motherhood and Being a Business Owner and patriarchal messaging we get around that. And we continue the conversation I love to have with everyone--how we actually mimic (and therefore reinforce) the patriarchy and other systems of injustice! Ugh. We don't know we are doing it because we know what we know and we don't know what we don't know--BUT YOU ARE HERE LEARNING WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW AND THAT IS SO FREAKING AWESOME AND I LOVE YOU! S3 Ep 11Internalized patriarchy and feminism leads to body positivity journey through painting with Beth Knight

On paper, Beth Knight was incredibly successful. She was an ex-pat living in London, working a tech job, and making excellent money. Her job and income gave her prestige. It really was the kind of life that our culture tells us is exactly the life we should all strive for and that will make us HAPPY! Success! Money! Instead...in her own words, "I was dying inside. I just hated myself." When COVID hit, she was forced to sit still for the first time in her life--and the self-reflection that came with that changed everything. She enrolled in coaching programs and got into therapy. A graduate from art school, Beth picked up her brushes and paint and started to paint the truth of who she is. It started with a painting of her crying--not just any crying, but the deep deep crying of a breakdown. She shared it on instagram--a place that she had always used to show people how busy she was and all the cool things she was doing. This was her, raw, and vulnerable. And people loved it. And that opened a door for her to walk through as she continued her personal journey. I can't wait for you to listen to this episode and hear the rest of her incredible story!! If you're heading to the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh she will be there with her show, Who Told You to Be Small. S3 Ep 10The Importance of Involving Marginalized Communities in Decision Making with Sie Savage

This is an important conversation for all of us to hear because it encompasses making change at the governmental level. Before I get to the summary I want to celebrate and acknowledge that this is the FIRST MAN I've interviewed for the podcast! Yay! Sie is amazing and wonderful and I love him and I hope you do, too! Sie works in the nonprofit world in the Bay Area, and he is currently working transitional youth to get them housed (you may know that affordable housing in the Bay Area is a huge problem.) In this important conversation, we discuss the challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly transitional age youth and young adults, in accessing healthcare and other essential resources. Sie shows us the need for more inclusive and culturally sensitive approaches to healthcare, and the importance of involving marginalized communities in decision-making processes to avoid perpetuating systems of oppression. Sie highlights the systemic obstacles faced by these young adults, including housing and self-sufficiency challenges, burnout, and the need for a holistic approach that considers the broader social and economic factors impacting their lives. S3 Ep 9Care as a Leadership Practice with Allison Staiger

When you think of care workers what comes to mind? For me, I imagined nurses, nurses aids, home healthcare workers, hospice workers...so when Allison told me the care workers she started working with was MOTHERS I had to truly reflect on my own biases! And yet, in some ways, mothers are the ultimate care workers. In this conversation Allison unfolds her journey as a care worker (social worker and therapist) working with other care workers and the patterns that became clear to her through this work--and how that lead her to incorporate CARE and a LEADERSHIP practice. Allison shines such a clear light on this topic--a topic that is woven through with patriarchal, capitalist, and white supremacy culture beliefs and norms. We discuss: •Care work as a valuable leadership practice. •Care work, patriarchy, and resistance. •Trauma-informed care and coaching for therapists and other care professionals. •Weaponizing care skills in oppressive systems. •Matriarchal vs patriarchal business values and their impact on leadership, growth, and sustainability. S3 Ep 8When Your Job Puts You in the ER with Shannon O'Malley

This is an incredible conversation with Global Fund for Women's Everyday Feminist Fellow. From working to prevent child sexual exploitation in Thailand with the Freedom Story to coordinating global, capacity-building workshops with the Nike Foundation, Shannon's career has been driven by the power of brand to create social change. Shannon has a wide scope of experience and knowledge and she shares so much of it with us. We dive into how she started doing that work--how she kept saying YES to invitations that took her down so many roads. We also dive into the nonprofit world in general and how, despite truly good intentions, that world unintentionally mimics harmful patriarchal norms--norms that had Shannon end up in the ER at one point. Shannon is so open and so generous--you're going to be as entranced with her story and her experiences as I am. I can't wait for you to listen! [Boundaries Series!] Boundaries Will Set You Free!

This is the first episode in an ongoing series on boundaries. Boundaries are foundational to our joy, freedom, mental and physical health, healthy relationships, and a successful business that is also joyful! Boundaries are one of the most important things I work with my clients on. And because women have been told that "If you take care of yourself, other people suffer," boundaries are something we are not taught. And they are something that we tend to avoid at all costs. Owning who we are and what we want is daunting in a world that tells us to know who other people are and what they want. When we don't set boundaries resentment has fertile ground to grow. That's why learning how to set boundaries is so crucial. You are not alone in struggling with when and how to set boundaries! It's a process--but one of the most worthy journeys you'll take. So join me today as I chat with Karen Falzone--a client, friend, super successful business woman, and all around incredible human. You will LOVE her insights, I promise. S3 Ep 5How I finally started showing up for my business

If you want to stop hiding out and start powerfully showing up for your business then it is so important to unover what's holding you back and then create a new way to PLAY! There's a lot of reasons we hide out but one of the biggest one's I've found is because we are given some really fucked up messaging in our patriarchal society around marketing. In this episode I share how I started my business and the internal road blocks I ran into when trying to market and launch! It took me a bit to figure out what was stopping me but THANK GOODNESS I eventually got there! I dive into the lightbulb that went off and changed everything--including how it lead to me starting this podcast! I walk you through three Patriarchal Marketing Messages that are most likelty holding you back: •The Myth of Perfectionism •The belief that in order to make the sale, we need to MANIPULATE •The idea that in order ot market your business successfully you need false urgency, manipulative pricing, gouging people with payment plans, false scarcity, and exaggerated claims of success. I give you journal prompts for each of these so that you can start unpacking and dismantling your internalized patriarchy today! Yay! At the end of the podcast, if you're interested, I let you know about a gathering I'm holding this Thursday, April 11th. If it resonates, please join (I will be sending out a recording!) S3 Ep 4Photography and Dismantling Patriarchal Oppression with Éadaoin Curtin

Aaaaaahhhh....getting our photos taken. Do I hear a collective groan? I do know a couple people who don't get stressed at the idea of a photo shoot (or simply having a friend snap a photo on their phone!) but most people I know get anxiety at the thought. Photographer, Éadaoin Curtin, recognized that her clients were stressed out and decided to do something about it. Éadaoin's goal is to empower her clients throughout the process. I think getting our photos taken has a special place in the Patriarchy--it can truly bring up ALL OUR STUFF. The impact of the Male Gaze in our culture cannot be understated. Éadaoin helps women challenge beauty standards and lean into self-acceptance--a radical act if ever there was one.
