S7 Ep 9Chuck Beckett & Jar Turner, WFHB Community Radio

On today’s episode, we travel to Bloomington, Indiana to chat with Chuck Beckett and Jar Turner of WFHB Community Radio. Chuck, IT Specialist and member of the station’s board of directors, and Jar, General Manager, both began their venture at WFHB by volunteering, and both are passionate about the sense of community provided by their station. When the pandemic hit, WFHB was forced to restrict access to the studios and became ever more reliant on technology - which of course is where Airtable comes to the rescue. The station largely relies on volunteers to do everything from DJing, news reporting, and even radio theatre.Using Airtable’s new Sync feature, they are able to sync their volunteer calendar to several different bases, and securely share these bases amongst their volunteer base. Chuck calls this a game changer, and we have to agree.Chuck demos his Calendar Server base for us today, which is available on the Airtable Universe. The base allows a user to enter a start date and frequency, and yields dates that can be used in a recurring fashion on a calendar. One other project of interest is Chuck’s recently released app, called ORC. ORC is packaged into an Airtable base that is also available on the Universe, and employs the scripting app to output “pretty-printed” formulas - something formula loving users often find is missing from Airtable’s native formula editor.Check out the show notes for links to learn more about WFHB Community Radio, and see Chuck’s bases on the Airtable Universe.WFHB – Bloomington Community RadioRecurring Events Calendar Server - UniverseSign up for the BuiltOnAir newsletter! Each episode, we talk with someone active in the Airtable community to discuss their experiences and showcase an interesting way they’ve used Airtable in their work.In this episode Carri Craver walks us through the Covid-19 vaccine distribution center search tool she built powered by Airtable and Webflow. Her setup involved an Integromat integration to sync records stored in Airtable as CMS collection list items in Webflow. The result was a user-friendly portal where visitors could quickly view business hours, appointment requirements, and general availability at a glance.Since recording this episode, Carri helped launch a nationwide version of the Vaccine Finder through a partnership with Oracle. Andy talks about the development process for such a useful app and all the challenges it came with, such as making a wide-release app flexible enough to work for most users. S7 Ep 6Tanay Pant, Head of Developer Relations

On today’s episode, we speak with Tanay Pant - author, speaker, educator and head of developer relations at n8n - an up and coming automation platform that can connect Airtable to hundreds of other apps, and boasts features that Zapier and Integromat lovers will no doubt find impressive. Tanay has been in the technology world for years, and is known for his books “Learning Web-based Virtual Reality”, “Building a Virtual Assistant for Raspberry Pi”, and “Learning Firefox OS Application Development” - all published before the age of 22!Tanay tells us about his diverse use of Airtable - both in his personal and professional life. He explains how Airtable and n8n work together - n8n offers an Airtable “node” with all sorts of options that allow the user to grab one or more records, then pass that data on to subsequent steps in the automation to be manipulated or used with other apps.In the demo portion of today’s episode, Tanay shares two examples with us. The first is an app he built using Airtable, n8n, Typeform, and a product called Mindee that can extract data from an image. Tanay demonstrates how he can quickly and easily snap a picture of a receipt, and have that data flow to Airtable - vastly simplifying and streamlining the process of submitting expense reports. The second demo shows us n8n’s creative use of Airtable as an internal tool to help on the back-end of their site. On a daily basis, the company needs to create JSON files for each application that they integrate with. They use Airtable to store each application name and build the JSON files with a nightly job.Check out the show notes to learn more about n8n and Tanay, or follow him on twitter @Tanay1337.Tanay Pant (@tanay1337)n8n.io - Free and Open Workflow Automation ToolSign up for the BuiltOnAir newsletter! You may also recognize him from the Unofficial Airtable Conference thrown by Chris Dancy in September, where William gave a talk about Stacker.William boasts decades of experience in tech, having started developing in FileMaker for law firms in the 90s. His knowledge of database development makes for a great conversation about the pros and cons of Airtable’s interface and inner-workings.Over the years, William has written for tech publications such as the notable Macworld.com - and even reviewed Airtable as a “drop-dead-easy relational database management system” back in 2016. William shares a couple different bases with us today. The first is a house-hunting base, which he and his family used together when they were considering a move across their state of Texas. They were able to quickly record homes they were interested in, rate the ones they liked, and create a calendar of visits when it came time to book them.In addition to his work in tech, William is also a photographer. S6 Ep 9Shae Redding - Rogers, Architectural Photographer

Welcome to BuiltOnAir, a podcast and video series about all things Airtable. Each episode, we talk with someone active in the Airtable community to discuss their experiences and showcase an interesting way they’ve used Airtable in their work.In this episode we speak with Shae Redding - Rogers, an architectural photographer based in New York. Earlier this year, Shae was one of several speakers at the first-ever Airtable User’s Conference organized by Chris Dancy, where she showcased her unconventional contacts manager base. Shae gives us a more in-depth view of that base to highlight how it came to be, and how it helps keep track of all the people she meets across professions and social circles. While Shae may consider herself a newbie, she’s not afraid to seek out formulas, Zapier integrations, or Automation scripts to further improve upon her base. In fact, later on in the episode we brainstorm a couple formulas to help automate her work just a bit more.Formulas we talked about in the episode: IF({TheYear} = YEAR(TODAY()), “yes”, “no”)IF({TheYear} = YEAR(TODAY()), “This Year”, IF({TheYear} = YEAR(TODAY())-1, “Last Year”, “no”))SWITCH({Alignment Type}, “Appt”, “emoji”, “Email”, “*another emoji”)Visit Shae’s website hereWatch her session from this year’s Airtable User ConferenceFollow Shae on TwitterSign up for the BuiltOnAir newsletter! S6 Ep 5Aron Korenblit, Airtable Education Team

Hello BuiltOnAir listeners! We’ve got a great show for you this week. On today’s episode, we speak with Aron Korenblit from the Education team at Airtable itself. You may recognize him from twitter, the Airtable forum, Airtable webinars, and his livestream videos; in which he teaches users how to get the most out of the powerful tool we know and love.Aron talks with us today about the exciting release of the Airtable Platform, which launched this week (at the time of this recording). Airtable Sync is an answer to a long-awaited feature request, allowing one-way, cross-base sync. Finally, the Airtable Marketplace is the new home for Airtable Blocks (now called Apps), and includes custom apps built by users - such as the Scheduler app by our very own Kamille Parks!Today, Aron shows off what the Airtable Platform can do by demoing these new features for us. Welcome to BuiltOnAir, a podcast and video series about all things Airtable. Each episode, we talk with someone active in the Airtable community to discuss their experiences and showcase an interesting way they’ve used Airtable in their work.In this episode we’re joined by Brian Switchkow, a founding citizen at One Inc Cooperative. One Inc operates as a member-owned, member-controlled virtual economy dedicated to fostering a supportive ecosystem of creatives, entrepreneurs, and investors. Brian and his fellow citizens have helped bring dozens of unique projects to fruition, including a very nifty “spell-check for the soul”. But not all contributions are “monetary,” citizen’s can contribute five different types of capital to a project (there’s financial, but also intellectual, spiritual, cultural, and social capital) at any given time. If that sounds like it requires a lot of data, it's because it does! With so many moving parts, it comes as no surprise that Brian’s two Airtable bases have a number of fields, views and tables to manage it all. But, the beauty of Brian’s approach is that it allows citizens to interact with clean, simple interfaces which only show what needs to be shown with the help of a few handy integrations.Become a citizen of One Inc! Welcome to BuiltOnAir, a podcast and video series about all things Airtable. Each episode, we talk with someone active in the Airtable community to discuss their experiences and showcase an interesting way they’ve used Airtable in their work.In today’s episode, we speak with James Jackson. James describes himself as a product designer with really excellent taste, and we have to agree. His website is full of colorful, eye-catching designs, peppered with blog-style posts on his life and his work in the technology industry. In 2013, James was a content writer reporting on arts and culture in North Carolina. He befriended an engineer, and so began his foray into “building things” with tech. He changed roles from a content writer to a junior developer, and after a few years, packed up and moved to the big city: New York. After taking a couple of classes, he fell in love with design.Adding up all of his talents yields a recipe for success: James brings together content, design and development to solve problems. He has always been a proponent for finding the right tool for the job, and Airtable checked all of the boxes. The project James demos for us today is his Weekly Summary Base. The power of this base lies in its simplicity: team members have access to a form that is filled out on a weekly basis, and managers have access to see the responses. With only two tables, James has set up an easy and compelling way for managers to see what’s going on within the projects they manage.Check out the show notes for links to see James’s designs and his website, which includes a write-up on his Weekly Summary project, complete with screenshots and explanations.Learn more about James below!James’s WebsiteJames's Designs (Dribbble)Airtable Weekly Summary for Managers | James DarinSign up for the BuiltOnAir newsletter! Welcome to BuiltOnAir, a podcast and video series about all things Airtable. Each episode, we talk with someone active in the Airtable community to discuss their experiences and showcase an interesting way they’ve used Airtable in their work.In today’s episode, we speak with Jon Letts: a man with a passion for organization and communication. Jon spent his college years focused on and sometimes giving presentations on the “Productivity Triangle”: Calendar, Email, and Task Lists. It was his belief that if these three things were kept in sync and organized, that nothing would go unnoticed. After discovering Airtable, he realized that there was something missing from the Productivity Triangle - People. Airtable allowed him to seamlessly add another layer to his life-system by linking each email, task, or calendar event to a person. In his words, Airtable and Zapier changed his life - a sentiment to which I’m sure many listeners will agree.Jon calls his system and subsequent Airtable Base, “Contuity” - a name representative of his passion about creating and understanding connection. As it covers areas of his life such as relationships and thoughts, Jon equates it to a Personal CRM. When he adds a contact to his iPhone, they’re also added to his base. He uses a simple form to add what he calls “Jots”, turning the base into a Bullet Journal of sorts. By using Airtable’s single and multi-select fields, he’s able to categorize each Jot into what he calls “spaces” of his life. All of this culminates into a color-coded chart showing what he spent time thinking about or doing over the last year. Jon shows us the chart and points out what stands out to him the most, such as how his “friendship” category shot way up after his recent move. There are tons of cool bells and whistles to Jon’s base, which he has published to the Airtable Universe. After getting a bit more comfortable, she started building her own bases from scratch. She has since published three bases to the Airtable Universe, with uses ranging from fun to practical. She shows us these three bases today: Her Personal Budget and Debt Tracker, Movie & TV Log, and Home Improvement Database. Most striking in these bases is Hannah’s creative use of the gallery view. S5 Ep 2Bill French, Technology Innovator & Entrepreneur

Welcome to BuiltOnAir, a podcast and video series about all things Airtable. Each episode, we talk with someone active in the Airtable community to discuss their experiences and showcase an interesting way they’ve used Airtable in their work.On today’s episode, we speak with Bill French: technology innovator and entrepreneur. Bill founded Global Technologies Corporation in 1981, giving him over 30 years of experience in software products and services. You may recognize his name from the Airtable Community Forum, where he regularly shares his advice, professional insight and tools he has built with Airtable. When a company using Airtable reached out for Bill’s help in 2016, he was quickly compelled by the product’s logical and sleek design. He could see the value that a “no-code” environment provides users. However, Bill also expertly points out that “no-code” is also code for “potentially limiting”, which is where he comes in.When it comes to adding new features, Bill often tells his clients to “add plumbing, rather than a second kitchen sink”. He thoughtfully applies this to Airtable’s new scripting block. If Airtable is a kitchen sink, the scripting block is new plumbing allowing us to build what we want. We discuss the block at length, and get to see some of the awesome things he has built.Bill shows us a few scripts he has written for the new block, complete with many tips and tricks. He demonstrates “BlockChaining”, in which he is able to run one block after another. Check out the show notes for a link to the post Bill wrote about this. He also shows us “Dot”. “Dot” is a program he wrote in the scripting block, which he calls a tribute to an early program called dBase, which was navigated by a dot prompt line. Dot allows Bill to drill down into his tables to sift through his data in more advanced ways.Learn more about Bill and Global Technologies CorporationBill’s Airtable Community Forum ProfileBill’s Post About BlockChainingSign up for the BuiltOnAir newsletter! Victor has run a national call center in the hospitality industry, owned his own pool league, and now is the founder of Master Book Flippers: an online service that helps Amazon Book Sellers source their products. After getting frustrated with the limitations of Google Sheets and Excel, Victor found Airtable and began using it to manage his book inventory in the summer of 2017. Since then, he’s added numerous bells and whistles and even has started helping other online booksellers to create and manage their own Airtable databases. The Base Victor shares with us today is his Customers and Subscription Tracker, where he has expertly made use of junction tables to accurately track his subscriptions and the versions and rates of each. Included in this base is a Daily Emails Table, where he uses Zapier to automate the sending of links to the individual bases he creates for each of his customers.Another great feature of Victor’s base is his creative use of Views.
