Today I'm joined by Clare Nash who describes herself as an "Architect creating dream eco-homes, barn conversions plus environmental and community focused housing schemes" Today we are talking about how to find a work/life balance. Design Your Life Book - https://www.hive.co.uk/Product/Clare-Nash/Design-your-life--An-architects-guide-to-achieving-a-worklife-balance/26380240Bursting with tips, ideas and how-tos on all aspects of designing a working life that suits you and your business, this book explains in clear and accessible language how to avoid the common pitfalls of long hours and low pay. It explores how to juggle work with family commitments, how to set your own career path and design priorities, and how to instil a flexible working culture within a busy lifestyle.About Clare Nash Architecture:Clare Nash Architecture Ltd is a 5 person architecture practice based in Brackley in rural South Northamptonshire on the Oxfordshire border. Specialising in energy efficient rural design and project management, particularly eco-refurbishment and new build, CNA's design focus takes inspiration from the vernacular.Focusing on people, site, climate, location, context, sustainable and beautiful materials to produce buildings that sit well in their surroundings and suit the people who reside in them. This means CNA is involved from the initial concept design, through to planning and building control and continuing right through to working with builders to final completion. CNA's level of involvement is tailor made to each project depending upon an individual client's requirement whilst always ensuring close collaboration with each client in every project. They are a small team and operate a flexible working model which means they do not work from an office but do have regular design meetings. S1 Ep 81Contemporary Vernacular Design - Clare Nash - BS081
The second Episode with Architect Clare Nash this time discussing the findings from her book Contemporary Vernacular Design How British Housing Can Rediscover Its SoulThe book presents 25 inspirational housing schemes providing hope for the future of home building in Britain. Highlighting the need for the UK to reclaim its sense of local identity through the vernacular, these case studies are not just examples of good design but demonstrate the achievable nature of contemporary vernacular in today's society.Generating a sense of place, community and regional identity, these schemes are also affordable and highly energy efficient. Through site visits and interviews with both architects and residents, each case study explores how the schemes were delivered, how they have been received by the community, and how passive principles of vernacular design were applied to create true sustainability.Episode 81 links:Clare Nash Architecture - https://clarenasharchitecture.co.uk/Creating sustainable towns (BS006) - https://www.buildingsustainabilitypodcast.com/creating-new-sustainable-towns-noel-isherwood/Graven Hill Development - https://www.gravenhill.co.uk/Connect with me:IG - @jeffreythenaturalbuilderTwitter - @JNaturalBuilderFacebook - JeffreythenaturalbuilderLinkedIn - JeffreythenaturalbuilderThe Mick & Pat ShowJoin us for informal conversations surrounding beer, film, politics and philosophy.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showConnect with me:IG - @jeffreythenaturalbuilderTwitter - @JNaturalBuilderFacebook - JeffreythenaturalbuilderLinkedIn - JeffreythenaturalbuilderSupport this podcast - https://www.patreon.com/buildingsustainability Hosted on Acast. S1 Ep 76The Last Straw Journal - Alex Henderson, Gavin Fraser, Kenny Fallon & Zoe Gardner - BS076
This episode we are talking to the brand new editorial team for the Last Straw Journal - Alex Henderson, Gavin Fraser, Kenny Fallon & Zoe Gardner! The Last Straw JournalTHE ALTERNATIVE JOURNAL OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION - for dirtbags and dreamers - since 1992The Last Straw is a platform to share and explore ideas of a better world through the lens of building methods and materials. In the face of climate crisis and increasing alienation from each other and the Earth, we believe another world is possible. Our goals are to bring a critical perspective to conventional practice, imagine alternatives, and connect designers, builders, and dreamers. We offer both an uncomplicated introduction to alternative building, and a rigorous review of the latest developments. We learn from the past and present to help each other build a more autonomous future. For over 25 years, The Last Straw was the only international journal dedicated to natural building and ecological design. It was startedas a collective effort by straw bale builders Matts Myhrman and Judy Knox in Tucson, Arizona in 1992. Since then twenty four editors, three publishers, and countless contributors have continued the long conversation about alternative ways of building and living. The magazine began during the natural building revival of the 90’s, but a publication like this is needed now more than ever. In the fall of 2020 a group of friends got together to bring new life to The Last Straw. Catch up on where The Last Straw has been and join us in imagining the world we want to live in!Episode LinksThe Last Straw Website - https://www.thelaststraw.org/Community Rebuilds - https://www.communityrebuilds.org/Moab, Utah - https://www.discovermoab.com/Rocky Mountain Natural Building Conference 2021 - https://natural-building-alliance.org/events/2020_rmnbc/Rural Studio Programme - https://ruralstudio.org/Support the podcast - https://www.patreon.com/buildingsustainabilitySuggested Episodes to listen to Next:What are the environmental impacts of building with Straw? - John Butler - https://www.buildingsustainabilitypodcast.com/what-is-the-environmental-impact-of-building-with-straw-bales/A Straw Bale Catch Up - Phil Christopher - The Mick & Pat ShowJoin us for informal conversations surrounding beer, film, politics and philosophy.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showConnect with me:IG - @jeffreythenaturalbuilderTwitter - @JNaturalBuilderFacebook - JeffreythenaturalbuilderLinkedIn - JeffreythenaturalbuilderSupport this podcast - https://www.patreon.com/buildingsustainability Hosted on Acast. S1 Ep 72Biophilic Design at Source - Sophie Lacey - BS072
Today we talk about mindful spaces and biophilic meditation with Sophie Lacey.Sophie has been running her own freelance copywriting and content writing business for nearly 15 years, working with a variety of lifestyle brands and specialists in placemaking, the built environment, interior design and retail. Her half-Swedish heritage inspires a love of simple design and an affinity with nature and organic materials, colours and textures, while her diploma in meditation teaching gives her a unique perspective on mindful spaces, biophilic design and placemaking for wellbeing. Sophie’s meditation and mindfulness teaching takes an unusually broad and non-affiliated approach, meaning students are encouraged to choose and adapt their practice according to need and preference. She uses her creative copywriting skills to devise engaging multi-sensory meditations, using her love of nature and spiritual ideas from across cultures to reconnect her students with their true selves in an effective and enjoyable way. In the spring and summer she leads meditation and forest bathing events at University of Oxford Botanic Garden & Arboretum.https://sophielacey-copywriting.co.uk/https://www.lindentreemeditation.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/sophielaceycopycontentwriter/https://www.facebook.com/lindentreemeditationdotcom Support the podcast - https://www.patreon.com/buildingsustainabilityWorkshops with Sigi Koko & James Henderson - https://thathempcreteguy.com/coursesFuturebuild 2022 - https://www.futurebuild.co.uk/Biophillic Design Episode with Bill Browning and Catie Ryan - https://www.buildingsustainabilitypodcast.com/biophilic-design-bill-browning-catie-ryan-bs047/Connect with meIG - @jeffreythenaturalbuilderTwitter - @JNaturalBuilderFacebook - JeffreythenaturalbuilderLinkedIn - Jeffreythenaturalbuilder The Mick & Pat ShowJoin us for informal conversations surrounding beer, film, politics and philosophy.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showConnect with me:IG - @jeffreythenaturalbuilderTwitter - @JNaturalBuilderFacebook - JeffreythenaturalbuilderLinkedIn - JeffreythenaturalbuilderSupport this podcast - https://www.patreon.com/buildingsustainability Hosted on Acast. It can be viewed here.Until recently, little attention has been paid to the carbon impacts of the construction and refurbishing of buildings, with the majority of focus on their operational performance. Substituting carbon intensive technical materials with regenerative resources and materials from the biosphere, which absorb and store natural carbon, could have a significant impact on both the carbon footprint and economy of the UK.The built environment is responsible for almost 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions. If we intend to halt the progress of the climate and ecological breakdown, we must find new ways to design and to build.List of resources, suggested materials, and social media handles:https://materialcultures.org/Research website - https://materialcultures.org/research-ney/The Report https://materialcultures.org/2021-circular-biobased-construction-in-the-north-east-and-yorkshire/https://www.arup.com/Carbon Copies - https://materialcultures.org/publication-carbon-copies/Adaptavate - https://adaptavate.com/Central Saint Martins, UAL - https://www.arts.ac.uk/colleges/central-saint-martinsInsulate Britain Interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzJOFANOC4EWholewoods (Adrian Leaman) Roundwood timber framing course - http://wholewoods.co.uk/roundwood-timber-framing-course/Spotify invests in AI defence Tech - https://www.nme.com/news/music/artists-criticise-spThe Mick & Pat ShowJoin us for informal conversations surrounding beer, film, politics and philosophy.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showConnect with me:IG - @jeffreythenaturalbuilderTwitter - @JNaturalBuilderFacebook - JeffreythenaturalbuilderLinkedIn - JeffreythenaturalbuilderSupport this podcast - https://www.patreon.com/buildingsustainability Hosted on Acast. S1 Ep 51New Dawn Traders - Alex Geldenhuys - BS051
I'm delighted to bring you a conversation with Alex Geldenhuys of New Dawn Traders - When I organised this recording, I thought the focus would be on the climate benefits of sailing vessels over conventional shipping methods. I was delighted to learn of the much deeper level of good this project is doing. By investing in the small producers who are connected to their land and doing best by it, not just for profit, but also for stewardship of this vital resource. New Dawn Traders have created a new way ensure the products you are buying are ethically and sustainably up to scratch. "NEW DAWN TRADERS is an experimental business. We trade in wild ideas and delicacies, working with sailing cargo vessels to import produce from across the Atlantic Ocean and along European coastlines pollution-free.Inspired by people, projects and businesses that promote resilience in local food systems, we have designed the Voyage COOP to apply this way of thinking to international trade. With our network of ships, producers and allies, we are building new models for supply chains that puts planet and people first.Through our products & events we are invigorating a new maritime culture around sail-powered cargo ships, the goods they carry & the communities they support. Our journey is a symbolic one, playing our part in the global movement to bringing food trade to a human scale & consumerism to a conscious level. S1 Ep 47Biophilic Design - Bill Browning & Catie Ryan - BS047
This week I am incredibly excited to be joined by Bill Browning and Catie Ryan from Terrapin Bright Green to discuss biophilic design. Biophilic design is a concept used within the building industry to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions. Used at both the building and city-scale, it is argued that this idea has health, environmental, and economic benefits for building occupants and urban environments, with few drawbacks. (Wikipedia)For me, finding out there is scientific evidence to show that bringing nature into your life makes you happier/healthier/better functioning was a slight surprise. In every natural building I have been in, people have talked of 'the feeling' or of calming. Having read into biophilia, it's certainly true that nature does this. What I find fascinating is the depth at which we can utilise this knowledge to create better spaces for humans to exist in - ones which bring nature in. This goes well beyond, putting some house plants in a room, but looks at views, textures, airflow, safety, shadows, patterns and so much more. I realised that biophilic design is the thread which holds together much of what i'm interested in and what these podcasts are often about. If i'm totally honest I didn't really know why I was including episodes on craft or getting into nature in this podcast. It just 'felt' connected. Now I see that it is connected! These are examples of biophilia that make happier healthier human beings. By bringing the willow basket into our lives and into our homes, offices and spaces we are connecting ourselves with nature, the place where humans thrive.Biophilic Design LinksTriodos bank free £60 - https://join.triodos.co.uk/raf/friend?code=XR6N3JQ914 Patterns of Biophilic design - https://www.terrapinbrightgreen.com/report/14-patterns/Rocky Mountain Institute - https://rmi.org/ US Green Building Council - https://www.usgbc.org/LEED rating system - https://www.usgbc.org/leedStephen KellertView through a window may influence recovery from surgery - Ulrich - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6143402/Recovery times in hospitals - httThe Mick & Pat ShowJoin us for informal conversations surrounding beer, film, politics and philosophy.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showConnect with me:IG - @jeffreythenaturalbuilderTwitter - @JNaturalBuilderFacebook - JeffreythenaturalbuilderLinkedIn - JeffreythenaturalbuilderSupport this podcast - https://www.patreon.com/buildingsustainability Hosted on Acast. S1 Ep 46Plants and Colour - Flora Arbuthnott - BS046
This week I'm joined by Flora Arbuthnott from www.plantsandcolour.co.uk.Having met Flora a few years ago, I was keen for her to be a guest on the podcast. We discuss the many similarities between her practices of creating colour from plants and my practice of building homes, from plants. Flora also goes through the process of extracting some colour from a flower so that you can try it at home. Flora's Bio: I make dyes, inks, and paints out of plants for drawing, painting, printing, and dyeing textiles and paper. I explore wild and cultivated plants to produce a variety of vibrant colours. Observing and learning from the plants that grow around us, I came to this practice through a desire to connect with the land where I live. Plants such as meadowsweet and buddleia flowers, oak galls, and dock roots, or growing dye plants in my garden such as madder, woad, and coreopsis. ByteSize - The magic of clay (Pt2) - Rowland Keable - BSBS003
bonusThis is part 2 of Rowland Keable of Earth Building UK & Ireland (EBUKI) & Rammed Earth Consulting giving us a byte size delve into the magic that is clay. Clay truly is a magic material and it continues to surprise me all the time. This substance that sticks to the soles of our boots that the peasants used to build with.... Surely we can do better than that as a building material? Well, as it turns out, this hugely versatile material is actually hugely beneficial for our health when we live around it. It's also readily available, reusable and can make up part of a highly efficient home. Hooray for clay! Chris Magwood not only has a huge wealth of experience building straw bale homes, but has the building science Masters degree to back up his experience. S1 Ep 43You Are Probably Breathing Wrong - Wibbs Coulson - BS043
I'm very pleased to welcome Wibbs Coulson of Mandukya Yoga back on the podcast. This time we are talking about breathing, and how you've probably been breathing wrong your entire life! I occasionally feature episodes on what I call the 'sustainability of self' - I see it again and again, that professionals in the sustainability profession burn out. When you see the need to fix the problem as so crucial that the human race depends on it... you tend to forget about your own needs. So with this in mind, I wanted to look at how we are breathing, how we can be doing it so much better and what benefits that will have to our health. This episode came from a bout of anxiety I experienced at the end of 2020 and start of 2021. Anxiety is a relatively common thing in the UK, in 2013, there were 8.2 million cases of anxiety disorder recorded. I had heard that breath could help, so I got together with Wibbs to see what his work in that area could teach us. ByteSize - Introduction & Tiny House Plans - Jeffrey Hart - BSBS001
bonusWelcome to this first episode of Byte Size Building Sustainability.... BSBS? I have heard a lot that people sometimes find it hard to find a hour to listen to podcasts, so these byte size episodes will run to a maximum of 10 minutes. It means you can get a little nugget of sustainability ponderings from my wonderful guests. Being as it's the first one, I thought I'd open the proceedings myself, with a little chat based on some advice I received from the Oregon based cob builder, Ianto Evans. I'm in the process of actioning that advice and there are some exciting changes going on for me! S1 Ep 42Solving damp problems with lime - Ben Kerslake - BS042
This week I am joined by Ben Kerslake from Carrington Lime.As well as a general geek out about lime, we mostly talk about how to solve damp problems in homes with some simple observation and materials choices. We discuss why the modern conventional approach of 'tanking' a building is usually fixing a symptom, rather than dealing with the problem.
