The Buffalo Bills made their final cuts to get down to the NFL roster maximum of 53 players. Among those let go were fan favorites, that included running back Raheem Blackshear, and Isaiah Hodgins. The cutdown also included a surprise veteran free agent and former first round draft pick, tight end O.J. Howard. Hosts Jamie D'Amico and big Chris Newton discuss why those players didn't make the squad, and assess the player who may have taken their place, including rookie running back James Cook, wide receiver and special teams standout Jake Kumerow, and second year tight end Quintin Morris. The Buffalo Bills routed the Denver Broncos by a score of 42-15 Saturday afternoon in a Week 2 preseason game at Highmark Stadium, extending Buffalo's preseason winning streak to ten games as the Bills have not lost a preseason contest since Aug. 26, 2018. On this week’s episode of the Billieve Podcast, host John Boccacino breaks down what he liked and what he didn't like from Buffalo's latest preseason victory. Among the positives for the Bills: The offense had a day, going over 300 yards in the first half alone, scoring touchdowns on its first six drives, rushing for 208 yards while averaging 7.7 yards per carry, and only punting once. QB Josh Allen dazzled in his one drive, completing all three passes, including a 28-yard TD strike to WR Gabriel Davis after executing a 360-degree spin to elude the rush. QB Case Keenum rebounded from a rough opener while proving that, once and for all, he is Buffalo's backup QB. Buffalo's running backs had themselves a day, as Devin Singletary, Zack Moss, James Cook, Duke Johnson, and Raheem Blackshear excelled vs. the Broncos. The Bills got excellent contributions from the offensive line. DE's A.J. Epenesa and Shaq Lawson were outstanding in their matchups vs. Denver's offensive line, as was safety Jaquan Johnson, who was all over the field, finishing with five tackles. Linebackers Andre Smith and Baylon Spector, and wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins continued their push for roster spots. The Bills avoided major injuries. Among the negatives: Buffalo's starting defense: the Bills held Denver to 90 yards in the first half, but 61 of those came on the opening drive that led to a field goal. Additionally, linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano both had missed tackles on the drive. Penalties from Buffalo's potential starting cornerbacks (Dane Jackson, Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford were all flagged for penalties). The kickoff coverage (Denver averaged 27 yards per runback on six kickoffs) Sloppy play (eight penalties, some that kept Denver drives alive). The Buffalo Bills extended their preseason winning streak to nine games by beating the Indianapolis Colts. But most importantly, the Bills escaped without any major injuries. But hosts Jamie D'Amico and big Chris Newton see a couple of other items they found encouraging. Among them are the performances of some backup players, including linebacker Joe Giles-Harris, running back Duke Johnson, and defensive tackle Tim Settle. They also were happy with the performance of a pair of rookie cornerbacks, Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford, as well as fellow rookie, linebacker Baylon Spector. The focus then shifted to comments made by Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders. Neon Deion believes that he should be considered to be on a higher level than other Hall of Famers. Yes, Bruce Smith made comments specifically about tackle Tony Boselli, but Sanders went full "Primetime" in his comment. That said, D'Amico believes that too many players get the honor, while Newton agrees with Sanders that there should be a higher level of recognition. The Buffalo Bills are in training camp at St. John Fisher University, and there have been a number of spirited practices--and even some scuffles as players fight to make the final roster. Jamie D'Amico and big Chris Newton take a look at the camp battles and predict who will make the final 53-person roster. Unlike years past, the hosts feel that the majority of the roster spots are spoken for, but there remains some great competition for key backups. Can Tommy Sweeney convince the coaching staff to keep three tight ends? With the poor play thus far in training camp at cornerback, will players like Olijah Griffin, Cam Lewis, or Tim Harris show enough in preseason games to make the 53? What about wide receiver? The Bills have a deep group with players like Marquez Stevenson, Trayvon Austin, and Jake Kumerow trying to impress both on the offense and on the special teams units. But the roster competition that seems to be intriguing fans the most is the Matt Haak vs. Matt Araiza at punter. Haak gets hang time, while Araiza gets distance.
