Show Notes

Rhoda Roberts, a trailblazing Bundjalung Widjabul Wiyebal elder and Indigenous cultural leader, has passed away at sixty-six. Known for popularizing welcome to country in the arts and elevating First Nations stories, she worked as a nurse before breaking into media. Hosting SBSs first prime-time current affairs show by an Aboriginal person and co-founding a long-running radio program, she found her big break directing Indigenous elements of the Sydney 2000 Olympics opening. Growing up amid discrimination, she finished high school and pursued nursing, later leading Indigenous programming at the Sydney Opera House. She earned the Officer of the Order of Australia in 2016 for her arts contributions. Roberts leaves behind a lasting push for shared cultural futures, urging everyone to listen closely to Indigenous rhythms for positive change.
