Show Notes
Scientists have discovered a new gene, OTUD3, linked to ulcerative colitis, a severe inflammatory bowel disease. By studying a Brisbane family with multiple affected members, researchers found a mutation in this gene that damages the gut lining, allowing bacteria to cause inflammation. This is the first time OTUD3 has been connected to gut health, and experts are hopeful that targeting this gene could lead to new treatments. The mutation has also been found in other ulcerative colitis patients, and early intervention with anti-TNF drugs has shown promise in preventing surgery. The study appears in Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
