What to Do If You See a Bear in the Wild

What to Do If You See a Bear in the Wild

If you ever stumble upon a bear in the wild, first and foremost, stay calm – panicking won't help anyone. Next, slowly back away while keeping your eyes on the bear and speaking softly. Make yourself look big by raising your arms or even waving them above your head. Whatever you do, never turn your back on the bear or run – that might trigger its instinct to chase. Finally, if the bear approaches, stand your ground, and if it charges, use bear spray or anything else you have to defend yourself. And remember, most bears prefer to avoid humans, so chances are, it'll just saunter off if you give it space.
