The Philadelphia Department of Public Health reported that 2020 saw the highest deaths by opioid overdose that Philadelphia has experienced since 2017. PDHP noted that in 2020, overdoes death rates among white people dropped by 10%, but increased by 29% among those in communities of color. In 2016, it 41 percent of eligible voters- or nearly 100 million Americans- in did not vote in the general election. Why do so many American opt of our democracy? Who are these individuals? How does their decision not to engage impact politics? We look at the 100 Million Project, a survery of 12,000 non-voters, released earlier this year by the Knight Foundation, as well as a recent poll of young Black Philadelphians, as a backdrop on this discussion of non-voters. Evette Alexander, director of learning and impact with the Knight Foundation and Bishop Dwayne Royster, Interim Executive Director of POWER provide expertise on this topic.
