Do we really understand the impact of internalized shame, and how it affects the way we live our lives as human beings? Sedruola Maruska had the unfortunate experience of losing a baby conceived in an extramarital affair. She felt devastated. She didn’t realize until many years later what the feeling of shame and embarrassment caused her to live her life from a place of default.
As a first generation Haitian immigrant, she encountered other Haitian people who felt ashamed of who they were and where they came from, but because of her dad and the way he spoke about the country and people, she did not adopt this feeling of inferiority towards her country of heritage.
Today, she is an advocate for equity and inclusion, and understands how some Black people don’t see racism as a problem in the similar way some white people don’t. Understanding the role plays in racism, and inclusion can help us to begin a true path to equity.
