#88 Broadway Music Director Brad Haak on Collaboration as a Creative Superpower
I'm giddy about today's guest on the podcast: Broadway Music Director BRAD HAAK. Why??? Original Music Director for Broadway shows like Mary Poppins, An American in Paris, and Lestat… He continues to create world-class musical theatre through arranging & conducting. He's my best-est friend. We met at Northwestern (I've known him for 28 years) so you know I get him to spill allllllll the tea on the famous peeps he works with, including... Beyoncé, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Stephen Sondheim, and Audra McDonald... just to name a few! They've been awarded a total of 62 Grammys, 15 Tonys, and 4 Academy Awards – not bad company to keep! We shared a 500 sq foot apartment in NYC on the corner of 29th Street & 10th Avenue for 7 years ← BEFORE The High Line, and BEFORE it was cool to live there. 🐁 Of course I'm really proud of my bestie Brad for those accomplishments. But his ability to balance the ups and downs of a freelance career with his dogged passion for creating incredibly affecting, Broadway-caliber musical storytelling is why I knew he'd be a great guest for the pod. Listen to learn how Brad mastered the ability to be an artist in his own right while collaborating with some of the biggest names in the bizniz. HERE'S THE TUNE YOU'LL SING AFTER YOU LISTEN: Best Practices for Being "in the room where it happens" with the Fanciest of People Attention Must Be Paid (!!!) to Your Passion → listen for why! The #1 (& Easiest) Way to Standout with Your Musical Theatre Self-Tapes What Most Catches the Attention of Musical Directors How to Be Certain You've Chosen The *Perfect* Material I have ZERO doubt this conversation will supercharge your creativity and forever change the way you collaborate! #87 Get Unstuck with Anthony Meindl
Anthony Meindl thinks a lot like me: creativity is your birthright, ignore it at your own – and the world's – peril. We both believe creativity is by no means monolithic, but the painter and the actor, the writer, and the photographer can suffer the same setbacks and upside-down thinking that might inspire an artist to think they are not important. Touché I say to the itty bitty sh*tty committee in our minds that try. I had a feeling that this guest was going to bring up all the feels and we would have an electric conversation together and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. If you're an actor, you know Anthony Meindl – his studio AMAW just celebrated 25 years and has locations in 9 cities around the world. And if you're a creative person (who isn't?) you might know him from one of his 5 best-selling books: At Left Brain Turn Right, Alphabet Soup For Grown-Ups, Book The F#©️king Job, You Knew When You Were 2…Or his newest book… Unstuck: A Life Manual On How To Be More Creative, Overcome Your Obstacles, And Get Shit Done. I read this book and it was like jaw drop after jaw drop because I felt like each chapter could have been its own all day meditation. We talk all about this and we get into some of the softer parts of what it means to be an actor. You know that I value vulnerability (Spoiler Alert: Anthony gets real vulnerable in this chat. I got a few Oprah moments!) by the conversations that we have around our spirituality that comes with creativity and our own calling towards that which we are meant to do while we are on the planet. I believe this conversation with Anthony will uplift and certainly inspire you. Here are just a few takeaways The Myth of Imposter Syndrome & How to Shut it Down How romance, creativity and money can get in the way and/or foster your own greatness Your impact is larger than what's in front of you Meditation will completely change how you see the world, how you see yourself and how you move through the world Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! #86 No One Here is Like Me with TV writer & author Robert King
This week's guest on the pod is TV writer & author Robert King – his latest book No One Here Is Like Me dropped just two weeks ago. A searingly honest, hilarious, and vulnerable look into what it means to be Black (and Black-ish) in America, Robert's memoir uses social commentary in a storytelling style that makes you feel like you're chilling with your best friend. If your best friend was a prolific TV writer & multiracial artist (and Barack Obama gave him parenting advice.) As a television writer he knows comedy: He writes for ABC's The Chase, Leslie Jones on Supermarket Sweep, and he was one of the head writers for Hulu's Up Early Tonight, Abbi Crutchfield's late night show. And the podcast lives up to its name in this episode (he breaks me!): Robert reveals his own book writing process while offering ME some advice on writing mine! (HINT: you don't have to do it alone ). SOME HIGHLIGHTS The #1 Mistake We Can Make When We Sit Down to Write Writers' Rooms! How to Lead with Your Voice when No One There Looks Like You President Obama's Parenting Advice How Creating Stories from Your Own Experience Attracts Abundance This conversation is so intimate and special; I truly felt like I was sitting on the couch next to a friend. No matter what kind of creative you are – you're going to love meeting Robert and you'll put your earbuds down feeling inspired after listening. #84 Get More Auditions With These CastingAbout & Actors Access Insider Secrets – Part Two
If you want to know a verifiable way to get more auditions, grab your notebook for Part Two of my interview with Blair Hickey and Brian Wold, the Co-Founders of CastingAbout and Consultants for Breakdown Services. I locked them in a Zoom room and forced them to tell me ALLLLLL THE INSIDER SECRETS of how actors can make themselves unforgettable on Actors Access… and there were just too many juicy takeaways for one episode. In this episode, we dive deeper into how to create and maintain those strong relationships with casting directors – especially now that those relationships are 90% online. HERE ARE THE TOP 3 INSIDER TAKEAWAYS We all know that "booking the room" is more important than booking the job, but B&B tell us exactly how to use this power to turn into repeat success Why you must tell YOUR story while also serving the story of the script – When you don't do this you leave auditions on the table and stay firmly planted in the callback-only zone Yes, technology has changed the way the industry works, but your job stays the same, so don't fall into the trap of distractions Brian Wold has over three decades of experience in public relations, marketing and business communications. Blair Hickey has been a working actor for almost 30 years (The Big Bang Theory, NCIS: LA, Heroes). Combining their skills and expertise, Blair and Brian created CastingAbout, the online casting and production guide for professional actors. In 2009, CastingAbout was acquired by Breakdown Services, where both continue to work as consultants. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! Your Audition Magnet Questions Answered
bonusYour Audition Magnet questions answered! If you're tired of not seeing the kind of auditions you want from your casting, profiles or representation, this program is designed to help. But I get that you might have some questions… so I gathered together the questions I hear most often, and answered them in this video. First of all, what IS Audition Magnet? My understanding is that the course is videos that we complete independently on a schedule and then attend group coaching calls with Brian. Is that correct? When are the calls? What if I can't make it to the Q&A coaching calls? I already know my headshots and reel are terrible so what's the point? What is the community facet of the course? It can feel so tiresome to go about this alone. I'm afraid I'll just sign up and won't follow through. What if I don't have a lot of work on my resume? I have lots of training but haven't booked much yet. Can I still benefit from this course? I'm in France, England, Canada, Australia and we don't use Actors Access. Will this even apply to me? I already have a solid social media following. I'm feeling hesitant – when is this going to be offered again? I have a rep and they already use my Actors Access profile, so why do I need this course? Visit www.YourAuditionMagnet.com to check out the program entirely designed to 3X your auditions!
#83 Get More Auditions With These CastingAbout & Actors Access Insider Secrets – Part One
I'm gonna guess you have an Actors Access/Breakdown Express profile so Casting Directors can find you. And even though the site has *some* free functionality, I'm also gonna guess that you plunk down $68/year (plus any other fees) so you can host your video files and get access to the best auditions out there. YOU AND 1.3 MILLION OTHER ACTORS USE ACTORS ACCESS. I'm sharing that BIG number so you make it a priority to listen to this episode of Brian Breaks Character. Today's guests are Blair Hickey and Brian Wold, the Co-Founders of CastingAbout and Consultants for Breakdown Services… I locked them in a Zoom room and forced them to tell me ALLLLLL THE INSIDER SECRETS of how actors can make themselves unforgettable on Actors Access. And look, you may have heard from them before… but I'm gonna guess that was before 'the panorama' and before 94% of your auditions were self-tapes. So this is brand-new intel that will actually move the dial on getting more auditions in the new normal. HERE ARE THE TOP 5 INSIDER TAKEAWAYS The latest developments regarding virtual auditions and online casting. The realities of how casting directors receive and review submissions (and why some STAND OUT more than others). How to avoid the most common mistakes actors (and sometimes agents) make when submitting. How to turn your online submissions into AUDITIONS. Strategies to create and maintain strong working relationships with the casting community even online. Brian Wold has over 3 decades of experience in public relations, marketing and business communications. Blair Hickey has been a working actor for almost 30 years (The Big Bang Theory, NCIS: LA, Heroes). Combining their skills and expertise, Blair and Brian created CastingAbout, the online casting and production guide for professional actors. #78 How To Land Reps in London with Ditte Maria le-Fevre
Have you ever wanted to get reps in London or Europe? Or just another dang city where you DON'T currently live? This week's episode of the Brian Breaks Character podcast is a MUST-LISTEN. Ditte Maria le-Fevre got her fair share of auditions in Denmark, but had a feeling there was more out there for her (sound familiar?). She was already doing all she could to get auditions on her home turf, so she courageously took the 4,100 mile leap and reached out to reps in the UK and she landed a FABULOUS manager. Ditte Maria is a graduate of my now infamous course #agentgoals and she gives that framework a lot of the credit, but SHE is the reason it worked. Here are the headlines from her 4K mile journey to bi-continental reps: It was HELLA easier than she thought it would be She presented her career in a way that reps in another city (and country!) can understand Reps were REALLY nice in their responses Doing the deep work to recognize your worth pays off in pounds £ (literally!) Oh, and one more thing: Ditte Maria is a joy to talk to – she is generous with her vulnerability; she doesn't leave out the stuff that held her; and tells us exactly how she was ultimately able to have the international career she always wanted. #74 HOW TO SAY THANK YOU (without being weird)
Run, Don't Walk to get the download that accompanies this episode: www.brianbreakscharacter.com/74 I believe the world is a better place when we acknowledge the people who have helped us along the way, but too often gratitude ends up on the cutting room floor because we get lost in a flurry of "how do I say this," "is it too late to send this?" and "does this make me sound needy?" So… you never click send. If you resonate with anything I just said, THANK GOODNESS YOU'RE HERE!Today's episode is our Season One Finale and it is a little different because we're going to listen in on a bonus training we held not long ago inside my program, Actor Operating System called HOW TO SAY THANK YOU (without being weird). During this training, I walk you through: When to send a thank you When it's too late to send a thank you (hint-hint: it's never too late) Exactly what to say in your message Plus a TON of prompts so you can make these messages you own And… If you think I'm gonna tell you to apply a tired old template to every thank you write, you couldn't be more wrong. Gratitude at its best is vulnerable and specific… so of course it brings up ALLLL the feels. So consider this episode a masterclass in HOW TO SAY THANK YOU (without being weird). Oh! And I don't want you to miss a single step of this process, so you can download all the slides from the training at www.brianbreakscharacter.com/74 It's totally free… And I don't even expect you to send me a thank you note. (wink) Thank You from the bottom of my heart for listening and helping make Season One of the podcast a success! Oh! And… This may be the last episode of the season, but you can take this time to catch up on past episodes. See you in August! Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! EWe at Team BKP are on a journey to create safe spaces for everyone in our community. Today's show is part 2 in a series where, with the help of anti-oppression business strategist & inclusive leadership coach Nadi Fantastic, we take stock of how we're doing. And at the center of this work is YOU; your feeling of safety in our spaces. The conversation across these 2 episodes is vulnerable, sticky, tough, and incredibly rewarding. So we encourage you to listen with a critical ear and open heart; we welcome your feedback and we are deeply grateful for the privilege of being alongside you in the journey. As part of our anti-racism and anti-bias action plan, we offer scholarships in support of our BIPOC, Disabled, LGBTQIA+ and/or 62+ actors. #71 Anti-Racism with Anti-Oppression Strategist, Nadi Fantastic – Part 1
Over here at Team BKP, we've been on an anti-racist and anti-bias journey since July of 2020. Inclusion and belonging are two of our company's core values and we are committed to foster diversity in our programs and create a safe space for all. But doing this means we have had to educate ourselves. Our team is primarily white and cisgender so that means we inherently do not have the lived experiences of actors and creatives that we welcome into our spaces. So, we are on this journey to do better… To become the leaders that we want to become Walk the walk Lead with our values Hold ourselves accountable With the help of anti-oppression business strategist and inclusive leadership coach, Nadi Fantastic, Team BKP, in this first episode of a two part series, starts the process of diving deep into our anti-racist commitment - we share where we fell short and where we thrived. In this episode, we publicly hold ourselves accountable by sharing our Accountability Report with the world. We talk about what comes up in our business and how we can do better. This includes: Learning how to do an accessibility check-in Using skin colored emojis Being transparent and vulnerable with our values I'm excited for you to listen as I know you will get a good sense of how you are showing up in your own life and for your anti-racist values as an artist and creative. It seems like no matter how many times you take headshots (and I know you've done them more than you can count on one hand!) the same exact 3 questions come up: What 3-5 types do I need to cover? What should I wear? How can I make sure that my headshot pops? …Maybe you've also hemmed & hawed over what to wear for your self-tape auditions? Or maybe you wear the exact same thing every single time cuz it's the ONE thing you know looks good on you? Welllll…. This episode has you covered.Television, film, & personal wardrobe stylist, Adrien Rabago joined me on Brian Breaks Character to walk us through her process to nail your wardrobe in headshots, self-tapes, and on the red carpet. The #1 COLOR that gets people cast… did you even know that was a thing??? Me neither! #66 Overcome the Pick Me! Pick Me! Mindset with Brian & Guest Host Lola Rufai
We are doing something a little different on this episode of Brian Breaks Character. Last summer, Lola Rufai of The Helping Actor invited me to her Breakthrough Actor Summit to talk about finding representation and specifically to share more about embodying the CEO when it comes to agent and manager meetings. Now, I don't know what kind of magic this woman weaved, but she got me to have a very different conversation around representation and it was just too juicy not to make into a podcast episode (of course I got her permission first). What I want you to listen for is not how to get a manager or agent. For that you can come to my FREE LIVE Masterclass. Listen to this episode to learn the stance you have to take in order to attract the yeses and the nos so that you can have freedom of choice when you're choosing that perfect representation. So not only are you not just getting any random manager and agent, but you are getting one that truly sees the value of what you have to offer as an artist and one who loves the uniqueness of you. Sounds like a dream, right? And if you already have representation… Don't stop listening to this episode! We also talk about how you can find your own value in the rep relationship you are in right now, cuz I know so often it can be tricky to have those conversations with your current representation when you're like: Am I getting enough auditions? Is there something else I can be doing? You know, we tend to fall back on those pretty lame questions. In this episode, I share the sophisticated questions to ask so that you can make sure you have that perfect match. And… I'm teaching the masterclass we talk about in this episode LIVE Tomorrow at 11am PT, Saturday, 4/2 and Monday, 4/4. #65 Let's Re-Define Productivity with Sam Valentine (oh, and BOUNDARIES!!!)
Anyone else triggered by the word L A Z Y?WARNING: I am a megafan of Sam Valentine and in this reunion episode we get to the juicy stufffffffff! We're coming up on a year and Sam was my very first-est guest! In today's episode she shines a bright light on the journey of her legendary podcast One Broke Actress. Sam openly describes how she's re-defined productivity in her own life and career (and her double-career as a podcast host & editor!). Lazy WAS a trigger word for Sam – so she took steps to create a new schedule that supports her goals and focuses on what she really wants. Don't we alllllll want that????We talk about the importance of creating boundaries for ourselves (and not in like a lame-o conceptual way, Sam breaks down the nitty gritty of her calendar and how it changed everything when she figured out what actually fuels her. (And screw everyone else's definitions of productive and successful!). I point this out because what Sam says will challenge you with practices that some might consider SUBVERSIVE – especially in a culture that often rewards toxic productivity. And I think that listening to her story can help ALL OF US – because I have never met a human who said I AM REALLY GOOD AT CREATING BOUNDARIES. This episode is all about being honest with yourself and creating a schedule that supports you living your most meaningful and creative life. #64 Your Identity and Your Acting Career Are Your Birthright with Yvette Gonzalez
Yvette turned down 8 agents. She took the time to meet with all of them, but she just wasn't feelin' it… And this was going to be her FIRST rep since graduating from USC! How did she go from unrepresented recent grad to empowered decision-making queen? When I first met Yvette she was at a crossroads… To be fair, WE ALLLLL WERE! March 2020 forced a lot of actors to rethink their plan – plus Yvette had decided to seek refuge in her family's home (which can bring its own layer of confusing failure-y feelings to the zennest of us all). As it turns out, home sweet home was the perfect place for her #agentgoals journey of self-discovery (→ it paid off big time when she finally did say YES to the agent of her dreams). In today's episode of the podcast, Yvette Gonzalez tells us how she reclaimed her Latina identity and taught herself to be unapologetic in the way she shows up (both in her agent meetings, and now, ALLLLLL THE AUDITIONS coming her way!). In our conversation, listen for Yvette's answers to these questions: How did she find the representation that was right for her? What helped her understand what she wanted from reps during meetings? How did she keep herself in a place of strength when it was time to walk away from a rep who didn't align with her vision? Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! #63 Unstoppable Creativity with Amie McNee
EThe titles of Amie McNee's FOUR books will tell you all you need to know about why she's today's guest on the podcast: We Need Your Art Collection, For the Burnt Out Artist, For the Perfectionist, For the Procrastinator. (Reads kinda like a blessing for the audience of Brian Breaks Character, amiright?)Amie joined me all the way from Sydney, Australia and just like her 89.5K followers on Instagram I instantly fell in love with her incredibly honest & authentic rallying cries for creative people. Amie is an author, speaker, creative coach and a book doula. She teaches a time-tested journaling technique that is designed to help you unlock your creative juju (at the time of our recording she'd been journaling every morning for the last 1,379 days). She gives us the inside track on WHY we procrastinate on creative endeavors and HOW to overcome it. And best of all, Amie is a fiery ball of enthusiasm & energy – my face still hurts from laughing and smiling for our entire conversation. She couldn't embody more of what this podcast is all about. P.S. If you journal, or ever tried to journal, or have zero desire to journal but would loooooove all the clarity and confidence that you've heard comes from it, you gotta hear Amie's take on how to do it well so it actually serves you and serves your creativity. #62 Sony Pictures TV Studios' Executive Director of Casting, Amanda Richards
When you audition for a pilot, there are TWO different casting offices that need to sign off on you before you are booked. There's the project casting director – these are the names you're familiar with like Michael Nicolo & Anya Colloff or Bonnie Finnegan & Steven Jacobs. And then there's the studio/network casting directors – the folks at CBS or NBC who are responsible for… wait, what are they responsible for exactly? If you're like me, you picture these folks in fancy, gated buildings wearing high heels and eating expensive salads while giving orders during important meetings at grandiose conference tables a la The Morning Show. Amanda Richards is Sony Pictures TV Studios' Executive Director of Casting and she clears it up for me on today's episode of the podcast. She gives us a "backstage studio tour" of how pilots move across her desk and through the development process all the way to casting and production. Now that self-tapes and zoom callbacks are the norm, testing for a pilot/network has changed – big time. And since I have ZERO doubt that you'll test for a Network pilot someday, I highly recommend you give today's episode a listen so you're prepared. Plus, Amanda created the first ever Diverse Actors Showcase at Sony and shares exactly how it came to be – (and how you can get involved!). Pilot season strikes abject fear in most actors because it's like giving candy to your compare-and-despair demons. And now that they're hyped up on sugar, they can quietly chisel away at your confidence and purpose… NOT ON MY WATCH! Knowledge is power and I believe educating yourself during this time is pivotal – let this episode be just one way you can empower yourself to DECIDE how you'll think about this time of year. We take a deep dive into talking about one's purpose and passion and how eating habits, movement and community play a major factor in being able to live a truly balanced life. More About Francesc - Francesc Miralles is a writer published all around the world. If you have ever been challenged to rethink your branding, quit your day job, choose a different path or try something new - Drop everything and listen to this life-changing episode with Dallas Travers NOW. Dallas Travers is the bravest person I know (and not just because she's my coach!). She knows failure. She knows fear. She knows foolish… she once put a photo of herself doing the splits on a flier to attract clients. (spoiler alert: it didn't work) You might know Dallas as 'The OG' bizniz coach for actors; nowadays she's the coaches' coach… she helps coaches on a mission who want the freedom, confidence, & impact that comes with a prosperous business. Dallas inspires others with a can-do spirit that will take your breath away But before we make her into a unicorn (cuz she'd say you're a unicorn too), you should know that it's her empathy, integrity, and 15 years of experience in the courageous 'art of putting yourself out there' that makes her special. On today's episode of Brian Breaks Character, Dallas doesn't hold back. She offers a love letter to actors everywhere (they're the ones who brought her to the dance afterall) – plus she shares the wisdom she's picked up along the way. #59 How To Get Representation In A City Where You Don't Live – Cellina Tells The Tale From Chicago
bonusCellina Munro had been looking for representation for seven years. She trained and spent a lot of money on showcases. With the intent to move to Los Angeles, she reached out to managers in LA before the move and guess what? Cellina got 10 requests for meetings (in which she chose to take 4) and 4 IN THE ROOM OFFERS. Cellina found the bicoastal manager she deserves - one who is not worried at all about her current Chicago residence and is super supportive about her move to LA. And… You won't want to miss the part towards the end where Brian helps coach Cellina on her big move. CLOSER LOOK & TAKEAWAYS You don't need a TV credit to get the representation you are looking for Reps are as human as you are and they want to be picked just as much as you do You need to show up as a whole person in the emails you write to potential representation The benefit of being new in town With this How They Did It series, actors I'm talking to you: I believe that acting is your calling and your purpose on the planet. You use your voice, and your body, and all that you are, to tell stories that remind US what it is to be human. You have the power to change lives. And, we all know that having great representation makes that impact all that much more possible. But let's not get it twisted – looking for an agent or a manager sucks. It's not straightforward, there are tons of people telling you the best-slash-only ways to do it, and it can leave you in a constant state of anxiety thinking to yourself – is this ever going to happen for me? And that's why in this series of tell-all interviews with my agent goals students – you'll hear how they did it. REMINDER: Each of these bonus episodes is very different because each of these actors wants different things from their careers: some want to be on Broadway, others have their sights set on tv and film, and still others are creators and want to land reps that are excited by that. #58 The Truth About Pilot Season with John Rosenfeld
John Rosenfeld Studios is often the answer to: What acting studio should I go to in LA? CD's and agents look for it on résumés. Actors on a series prep for auditions with their coaches. Actors who go there - BOOK. And all that street cred is definitely worth the hype, but it's their mission that sets them apart: To cultivate the constitution of a happy, working actor. John's holistic approach to what it means to be a professional actor is what skyrocketed his studio to success when it opened 12 years ago. On this episode of Brian Breaks Character my guest is John Rosenfeld and our intention around this conversation was to really unpack pilot season. You will hear very quickly that although pilot season is still important, it has now become something that happens year-round. So, this conversation encompasses pilot season, but really focuses on the craft of acting - the awareness of self, empathy, having an authentic experience, building your foundation on solid ground and remembering the joy that brought you to acting. Even for those of you who might not be an actor who are listening, I think you can relate to the craft of saying yes to your art and the place where that meets technique. #55 Ignite Your JOY with Grey's Anatomy's Sarah Utterback
Today's podcast episode carries a message that I KNOW you'll relate to from an actress, you'll probably recognize. A lot of people think that actors with BIG Network TV credits have it easy. And don't get me wrong, credits can help – but even Viola Davis and Olivia Colman worry about where they're gonna get their next job. Sarah Utterback had an epic Recurring Role as Nurse Olivia on Grey's Anatomy – 19 episodes in Shondaland… so you'd think she'd hit the tipping point. She was working & making opportunities for herself – she's one of the founding members of Los Angeles' critically-acclaimed, Ovation Award-winning IAMA Theatre Company. When you meet Sarah you'll fall in love with her (just like I did) – she's got a warm voice and easy smile – you could easily see her take any of Jessica Chastain's roles or play Kristen Bell's sister on The Good Place. But when we met, Sarah was in THE BAD PLACE. …she didn't have an agent… …she was jaded about the bizniz… …and in her own words, she was "letting some shadowy stories" run the show… In today's episode of the podcast she tells you first-hand how there's a perversely satisfying fast-food feel-good self-righteousness when you judge the bizniz and yourself. This episode doesn't sugarcoat it: Icky, shadowy stuff is gonna come up, AND you have a choice. You can see those feelings as: permission to back off from your purpose and stop showing up OR an opportunity to slow down and DO THE WORK to reveal the truth of who you are so you can attract the attention you're ready for. Sarah did the work and it worked. GOOD SPOILER ALERT Sarah got 35 OFFERS for representation – plus 10 more reps said "If after all your meetings, you're still looking, please reach out." #54 Age Ain't Nothin' But a Number - How Sharon Got 17 Meetings for Representation
bonusSharon was without an agent for many many years, but was booking shows in theatres throughout Los Angeles. As she continued to watch the beautiful work others were doing in the theatre and in Film/TV, she knew she needed to find reps to make this happen even more. She overcame being worried about her age, technology and experience (even though she has a long list of impressive credits) and got 17 meetings for representation. Of those 17 meetings… she got 17 OFFERS! She not only found an agent, but also a manager. CLOSER LOOK & TAKEAWAYS How Sharon took responsibility for herself and her career and got 17 offers for representation The importance of "almosts" and how those moments gave Sharon the confidence that she needed to find reps Agents aren't worried about your credits half as much as you are With this How They Did It series, actors I'm talking to you: I believe that acting is your calling and your purpose on the planet. #53 Diverse Representation Founder, Jaia Thomas
Today is my birthday…But I have a gift for you! As an artist, your divine purpose is to change the world through your creativity. And if you're called to be a part of the rise in social activism right now – I've got a story that will inspire you to further raise your hand (and your voice!). Jaia Thomas of Diverse Representation joins me on the podcast today and models how to connect the dots from creativity to activism – and how we are called to do this work (big and small). Jaia walked into Black Panther pumped to see all the Black actors on screen; after the movie, she rushed home and whipped out her laptop to learn more. When she discovered the teams behind the Black actors were not Black she knew she had to do something about it (correction: she was able to find one person on Lupita Nyong'o's team). As you'll hear, it wasn't always a walk through Wakanda – but Jaia put one foot in front of the other to create a company (and a movement): Diverse Representation connects acting and sports talent with Black agents, attorneys, managers, & publicists (and each other!). If you have any desire to make this world a better place, I know her story will inspire you. Today is my birthday (it's okay to say that twice on the actual day, right?) and honestly, the greatest gift you could give me – AND EVERYONE ELSE ON THIS PLANET – is to do what you were called to do (anything less would be selfish). #52 Vision & Visualization
Today's podcast episode is mindset revolution in 23 minutes. And Brian Breaks Character listener, it's so easy, it might piss you off. I gathered together six actors to lead them through an exercise that cuts through limiting beliefs and sticky comparison thoughts to illuminate their deepest desires. Visualization is the act of using your imagination to create a mental picture or mental motion picture of something you want to do, be, have or experience. During the visualization experience, you give yourself permission to live the experience in your mind as if it were actually happening in the present moment. This experience works best in a quiet place without interruption. I hope you'll join us. #47 Your Self Worth Equals Your Net Worth with Katy Chen Mazzara
I'm gonna guess you inherited some money stories from your own upbringing. On today's show, my guest, Katy Chen Mazzara offers you an approach to face those money ghosts so you can craft a new relationship with money that actually ENCOURAGES YOU to claim your own abundance; acknowledge any debt you might have; and build the life you freakin' deserve. Katy reminds me of Cate Blanchett's character in The Lord of the Rings – she appears out of nowhere calm & all-knowing; nurses your wounds; and puts you back on your feet so you can go out there and save the world from impending doom, Frodo Baggins. {Or just, like finally buy a home in The Shire.} Katy was the first person to say to me - Your self worth equals your net worth, and not the other way round. Pretty powerful stuff, amiright? I know this conversation will help you clear up your own money-meaning-making mishegas that might get in the way of you making a home, sportin' a new cashmere holiday sweater, or booking a trip to Thailand. TAKEAWAYS The power of specificity to get what you want Cultivate your own self worth in order to have the net worth you deserve You are never too old or too young to start saving and investing When you are grateful for the things that you have it actually attracts more of the things that you really want in your life Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! #46 Thank You, Actors – What You Teach Us All
Actors are some of the most courageous, vulnerable, and growth-oriented people in the world - that's why I choose to work with actors. {I should probably write a book and make it required reading for, well, everyone, and title it: Actors Know Everything: A How-To Guide to Life & Success on Planet Earth.} It's important to us on the podcast to center the voices of our greatest teachers – so I invited three wildly different actors to the show to THANK THEM for all that they've taught me. Matt Pasini is a trans, non-binary actor and activist.Sharon Sharth has a storied career on Broadway and in film and she's entering her third act.Alison Stolpa redefines consistency every damn day. These three incredible talents drop by Brian Breaks Character to share their stories of how to show up; stay consistent; and not settle for less than you're worth. Here are some of the juicy TAKEAWAYS Different ways to make boundaries with your work How to allow yourself to claim where you are in your career The impact you have on others when you show up as yourself The power of sending love The secret trick of the post-it note And... This Thanksgiving as you enjoy your tofurkey, quinoa stuffing, and organic cranberry sauce, I want you to know how thankful I am for you. There are over 2 Million podcasts in the world (seriously, I looked it up), so I am deeply grateful you choose to listen to this one. It's a funny thing podcasting… there's no audience to clap or cheer at the end of the episode and there's no secret algorithm to measure precisely how well you're doing… But I'm proud of our consistency and each little IG DM, comment, and email that says an episode made a difference or inspired you keeps us going. So thank you, thank you, thank you. Keep listening and we'll keep bringing you more guests and content that will help you to make sense of this wild and woolly bizniz. Lucky to be alongside you. #45 No, Thank You! Say Yes to the RIGHT Representation
bonusYou know that dream of being fought over by multiple reps? It feels like a far cry from your average agent send-out. But hold tight my friends, because it is not! Listen in as actors Sawyer Greenberg and Sara Erikson share not only how they landed 15-18 meetings each, but how they made the hard choice of which rep to sign with...without burning any future Hollywood bridges! CLOSER LOOK & TAKEAWAYS Saying no thank you in such a way that it leaves doors open to future relationships with reps, even if they aren't going to be your rep (right now) How to create an email that all but sets you up for complete success in every meeting Plus a live coaching from Brian to narrow down exactly who and what you are looking for in an agent or manager With this series, actors I'm talking to you: I believe that acting is your calling and your purpose on the planet. #44 Write Your Dream Role with Emily Grace
I'm just gonna come out and say it, – DO NOT WRITE YOUR OWN CONTENT… Well, not until you listen to this episode! Because even though you've got the best of intentions, chances are you'll make a rookie mistake: You won't write the right character to showcase you & your talents. I hear you thinking: "Ummmmm, excuse me, Brian! I know a thing or two about scripts, I'm an actor, I look at them all day." That right there is the very reason you'll make this mistake. Today's guest Emily Grace walks us through creating content from the lightbulb moment to breaking the process down into small, actionable steps. No, like for real... She really realllllllly breaks it down so that it doesn't feel overwhelming! Plus she teaches us a reliable, failsafe hack to ensure you write stories that actually highlight your talent and attract the right attention in the bizniz. Oh, and we breakdown the entire plot of one of my favorite movies – The Devil Wears Prada. Emily Grace is an expert at helping actors get their damn scripts done. It takes courage to put yourself out there and today's guest helps actors create their own projects. Tune in to learn: The BIG mistakes actors make when it comes to writing TRUTH TIME: Just because you are good at breaking down a script doesn't mean that you are good at writing a character fit for you. #41 How to Get An Agent with Guest Host Jo Kelly
A couple of months ago the incredible acting coach, To Be Or Not To Act's Jo Kelly asked me to come on her IG Live to tell her students how to find managers and agents and the conversation that unfolded was sooooo juicy I simply had to make it into an episode of the podcast. If you're an actor who needs representation this episode is a no-brainer: LISTEN. NOW. After helping 542 actors sign with the right reps, I can't wait to tell you all about why my rebellious, new approach to make agents want you actually works. If you're not an actor, this convo has a lot to teach you, too: I teach the exact mindset you need to really put YOURSELF out there and to say what you really want. Jo is the perfect Oprah to my Deepak because she understands what it means to put yourself out there and she doesn't settle for fluff answers... – she grills me on why and how I've learned: A target list is the worst strategy you can use to find the right match Agents aren't worried about your credits half as much as you are Your reel is a giant waste of time and money Referrals are dangerous!!! – and a big, gross energy suck Diversity matters (amen and hallelujah!), but it's not a closed-door if your type isn't in high demand I promise that you can apply what we talk about in this episode to getting what you want in any career. P.S. If you've already watched my free training - Make Agents Want You - this conversation will take you backstage on how it all came to be (and I'll share the latest stats on how my students are doing reaching out to reps RIGHT NOW). I am gleeful and proud to introduce you to one of my very best friends and today's guest on the podcast, Kate Tellers. The Wall Street Journal calls her "a storytelling guru." Kate is on the leadership team at The Moth – one of the preeminent storytelling organizations in this country – she travels the globe to teach the art of storytelling. Isn't that so cool?!? There are a buttload of reasons why a big company like Nike would pair with The Moth to incorporate storytelling into their brand, but the big takeaway for Brian Breaks Character listeners: Storytelling can drive the bottom line for profit and impact. I believe all creativity is storytelling and I believe this episode is one of our very best. Kate does not hold back in this masterclass in storytelling: Surprise! Your aim in storytelling isn't to entertain, but to get the truth in your story Your story matters, no matter what… but it's gotta matter to you (my Agent Goals students know this all too well!) Bring a strong POV or no one cares, no one cares Kate walks us through her 3-step process to prep before telling a story or hosting a show How to get involved... there's probs a Moth StorySlam near you! Storytelling is the heart of what we do as creatives and I just know this intimate and honest conversation will inspire you (oooooooooh, and listen til the very end to hear some off-the-record Kate-n-Brian chit chat that will def make you LOL) Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character!
