Ep 87Ep87 - Chicken Chat with Royce Van Blaricome
Today, we're chatting with my good friend, Royce, who is a Master Breeder. Through the years, Royce and I would chat about breeding and how our fowl were progressing. We would chat for hours, discussing my latest articles in the Poultry Press. Those were great times. Well, in this episode, we continue our discussion about breeding and breeding methods. We also talk bout the modern backyard breeder and the obstacles they face, and their future. There's a lot of great nuggets of information that I know you will not want to miss.

Ep 86Ep86 - Can you Transform a Bad Strain into Good?
Most of the fowl today are hybrid crosses or mongrels. In fact, there are very few pure strains. The sad part is, most beginners are forced into starting with these types of fowl. So, what can you do? You can start by take steps toward transforming your bad birds into a good strain. In this episode, we talk about those steps, so that you can begin the process of creating a true strain.

Ep 84Ep84 - Coccidiosis with Dr. Rodrigo Gallardo
Today, we are talking with Poultry Veterinarian, Dr. Rodrigo Gallardo about Coccidiosis, also known as Coxy. It affects how your offspring grow and develop. And, it can have an effect on your overall strain.

Ep 83Ep83 - Preparing for the Breeding Season
In this episode, I will give you a number of useful tips, that will help get your breeding season started on the right foot. I had a great mentor who believed that preparation was the prerequisite to success. As a breeder, I took that to heart, and it has served me well for years.

And, Tawny sings her version of Jingle Bells – that she calls, "Farm Bells and Smells." And best of all, you do not want to miss their version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." This is Christmas, Troiano Style, a wild and funny journey to the world of chickens and St. Nick. Ho-Ho-Ho, Cluck-cluck-cluck, a jingle we will go!

Ep 81Ep81 - Infectious Coryza with Dr. Rodrigo Gallardo

This episode is packed with great information, and one you do not want to miss.

Ep 80Ep80 - Conformation of Body
EIn this episode we talk about the Type and Conformation of Body. Although we use American and Old English Games as the model, the information is applicable for most breeds of chickens. We all want birds that can perform and reach their potential. Well, this is not going to happen with a family with good conformation of body. Listen in as we take the bird apart and put back together again. That's right, we study all the parts that make up the whole, and their importance. This episode is packed with great information, and one you do not want to miss.

Ep 79Ep79 - The New Blood Syndrome And Members Coaching Call
In this episode we address a belief many breeders share, and that is, "it's better to introduce new blood rather than to create their own strain." Listen in as we discuss why adding and infusing new blood is not the answer, and that there is a better way. There are many misconceptions that breeders use to justify this practice, and we address them here. We also talk with one of our members of the Breeders Academy, and help her to reach her goals. This episode is packed with great information, and one you do not want to miss.

This is a special breed of fowl that has a rich history, which goes back to 500 AD. Patrick belies this breed predates the Vikings, when they came to Ireland. In fact, American Games owe much of their existence to the Irish Gamefowl. Not only do the American Games have Old English Games Spanish Games, and Aseel's, they also have the Irish blood in them, and a lot of it as well. In this episode, we are going to talk with Patrick, and help him improve his poultry husbandry practices and Farm Management practices, but we walk him through important topics, such as, how to build the proper brood pens

Ep 76Ep76 - Biosecurity Basics with Dr. Rodrigo Gallardo
In this episode, we are talking with Dr. Rodrigo Gallardo about the practice and importance of biosecurity. Most Breeders don't understand biosecurity, and the importance of keeping your bird safe from the exposure of disease. Some of us have strains that we've been keeping for over 30 years. Losing our birds to disease would be a travesty. What we are going to talk about today, if you follow it, will save your flock, and protect those valuable and irreplaceable strains. It's so much easier to prevent disease than it is to try and cure a sick bird. In most cases birds that were sick become chronic and never fully recover. And disease can spread very quickly throughout the yard. There's a lot of good information packed into this episode that I know you do not want to miss.

Ep 74Ep74 - Coaching Call with Mike Badger
In this episode, we are helping Mike Badger, host of the popular poultry show, called "The Pastured Poultry Talk Podcast," To create a strain that can meet his needs, and the needs of his customers. Does he breed, raise and sell pure fowl, or does he use his pure fowl to create hybrid crosses? Join our conversation as we discuss ways to achieve his goals. There's a lot of good information packed into this episode that I know you will not want to miss.

There's a lot of good information packed into this episode that I know you will not want to miss.

Ep 71Ep71 - Breeding for Fins rather than Feathers
In this episode, we are talking with a fish breeder. What's interesting here is that he uses the same breeding methods as chicken breeders. He has a wonderful understanding of genetics, and many of his goals are the same as ours. There is a lot all of us can learn from this interview.

Ep 70Ep70 - THE CONSEQUENCES OF CONTAMINATION
In this episode of Bred to Perfection, we are talking about what constitutes contamination and the effects it can have on your strain and the future of their breed. Whether you are creating a strain, or working to improve an established strain, the introduction of the wrong blood can set you back for years. It could even destroy the strain forever. Join us as we talk about what this means and how to prevent this from happening to you and your strain. We also talk about the functions and benefits of using sub-lines. I know you will find this interesting as well.

Ep 68Ep68 - The Down and Dirty of Defects
EIn this episode, we talk about defects and why they are detrimental to the success and future of our fowl, and why it's important to recognize and cull all fowl expressing defects. The truth is, most breeders are not aware of half the defects that exist. It could be sitting right in front of them, and they would not see it.

Ep 67Ep67 - A Coaching Call with Dereck
Today we are talking with Dereck, from Kentucky, and a member of the Breeders Academy. He wants to create a strain from the birds he already has on his farm, and is wondering if it's a good idea, and if so, how. In this episode, we start by evaluating the potentiality of his fowl, and walk him through the selection and breeding process. This is a good episode for most listeners and breeders, because we address many issues that can effect the success and progress of building and creating a new strain.

Ep 66Ep66 - The Buckeye Recovery Project with Don Schrider

Ep 65Ep65 - Coaching Call with Kevin Neilson
In this episode, I help Kevin to develop breeding programs for each of his strains. He wants to make sure his is starting on the right foot, and making sure his is doing thing properly at the right time.

Ep 62Ep62 – Our Favorite Chicken Books
A question I get often from our members is, as a breeder, what books are best, and which books should I get first? In this episode, we are going to share some of our favorite books on chickens and chicken breeding. Although we have thousands of books in our library, there's a handful of books that are considered our go-to-books. These are the books we check out first, and are the most valuable in our collection. As a breeder and teacher of breeding, I have collected a wide range of books. I have books on genetics and poultry genetics. I have books on evolution, biology and evolutionary biology. I have books on ornithology and bird related paleontology books. And of course, I have books on chicken and gamefowl breeding, and animal breeding, as well as books on Incubation and chick care, and poultry husbandry and poultry production. I also have a good collection of poultry nutrition and health care books. Although we have thousands of books in our library, there are always a handful of books that are considered our go-to-books. In this episode, we will be discussing our most used books, our favorite books. On the Breeders Academy, we have a page called "Most Recommend Books," so that our members can see what books exist, and which books they should add to their library. I believe you will find this episode extremely fascinating.

Ep 61Ep61 – Mother Nature and the Natural Order of Selection
EThis episode is a recording from 22 years ago, with my mentor, Tony Saville. We talk about natural selection and artificial selection, and its relationship to the breeding of chickens and gamefowl. I know you will find this very informative. This is a recording we did for an article I was writing. Tony Saville was showing me the relationship between artificial selection and natural selection. And, by selecting like Mother Nature, we could improve our fowl's natural instincts. There are some of us that know about the general nature of natural selection, but one might ask how does it apply to our chickens? Well, listen in and find out. I believe you will find this episode extremely fascinating. To listen to the show and sign up to our Free Breeders Bulletins, click this link. https://www.breedersacademy.com

Ep 52Ep52 – Coaching Call with William Vogl – Poultry Farmer
I've taught the art of selective breeding to many types of breeders, but the breeders I find extremely fascination are the small-scale commercial breeders. They are faced with a monumental problem, how to create a strain that can meet their production needs at a lower cost, do well in their particular environment, and have a high degree of constitutional vigor and good health. To make matters even more difficult, they want to create a strain that can improve each year without adding new, outside blood. In this episode, I will help Will Vogl of the Vogl Homestead Farm from Colorado, a small-scale poultry farmer, to turn his mixed flock of fowl into a productive and profitable family. No matter what fowl you raise, I believe you find this interesting and beneficial. To listen to the show and sign up to our Free Breeders Bulletins, click this link. https://www.breedersacademy.com

Ep 51Ep51 – The Progeny will Prove the Worth of their Parents
Next to selection and knowing your strain really well, the progeny test may be the best tool we breeders have to determine the true value and worth of our brood fowl. In this episode, we will talk about why the progeny test is so important. And, why we believe this method is essential to creating and improving your strain. Tony Saville has not only changed the way I thought about breeding, but changed the way I bred my fowl. This is a show you don't want to miss. He's had the greatest influence on me, my thinking about breeding, and the way I select my brood fowl. I'm always talking about him on the show, and sharing what I learned from him through the years. Ep 49Ep49 - Coaching Call with Karen Johnson
How to downsize and maintain a viable strain. The question is - how to reduce the number of brood fowl, and still maintain a viable flock? How to breed, raise, and produce just enough offspring to keep the family going, well into the future? Reducing the size of your flock can have many benefits, but can be problematic as well. For example, if you do this properly, you can actually improve the quality and performance, and improve the uniformity and overall health of your strain. You will also improve the purity and lower their genetic diversity. On the other hand, if you do this wrong, you can destroy your strain, and send them in the wrong direction. Yes, the consequence can be high, and take many years to fix the bloodline.
