Ep 184Sowmya Krishnamurthy
EFrom we were knee-high, one thing we were taught in our respective communities (Black, Asian and Hip Hop) is that you have to look good. Anything less was uncivilised. Real talk, Hip Hop and Fashion are so intertwined. Don't believe us? How many trash rappers get a pass because they look the part and dress well? No questions. We have too many answers. This week, we're joined by Journalist, Writer and all-round bad gyal with the pen, Sowmya Krishnamurthy, who has just released her first book, Fashion Killa: How Hip-Hop Revolutionized High Fashion. Sowmya shares the origins of writing the book, the years it took to get the story straight, challenges, lessons learned and everything in between.Connect with Breaking AtomsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/breaktheatomsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/breaktheatomsFollow SumitInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hiphopchronicleTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/hiphopchronicle Follow ChrisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamkinetikTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/iamkinetik Hosted on Acast. Ep 183Franklin Boateng
EWe're back with another episode, and this week, we're not speaking to a Rapper, DJ or Producer. We're branching out a little and speaking with an official fashionista and fly thread connoisseur in general. Franklin Boateng, aka The King of Trainers, joins us to share his Hip Hop origin story and shares memories of spending summers in Brooklyn, getting the latest mixtapes and even pulls out old copies of The Source magazine. He also gets into the dotted line deliverables and shares details about his partnerships with JD Sports, Ellesse and Avirex. It's about more than looking fresh with this one, though. Franklin also gets reflective about the social currency of trainers, why they've become a Hip Hop uniform and what lengths people go to cop the latest wares. Franklin is also the first guest to shout out Shaquille O'Neal and give him props.Connect with Breaking AtomsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/breaktheatomsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/breaktheatomsFollow SumitInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hiphopchronicleTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/hiphopchronicle Follow ChrisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamkinetikTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/iamkinetik Hosted on Acast. Phat Phillie is a Hip Hop ambassador in the truest sense and has been representing the culture in Croatia and beyond for three decades. Tap in and listen to stories of how he discovered Hip Hop in Zagreb, his travels to New York, meeting his heroes and providing them with opportunities and his work in the reissue market with 90's Tapes. You can listen to some of Phat Phillie's radio shows, and DJ sets below. The first 1st Zagreb, Croatia, Yugoslavia Rap show hosted by Slavin Balen (1984):https://soundcloud.com/dj-phat-phillie/sets/80s-rap-radio-slavin-balenClub USB (Summer 1991):https://hiphopradioarchive.org/show/1091The Blackout Rap Show (Started in Zagreb in 1993):https://soundcloud.com/dj-phat-phillie/sets/90s-rap-radio-blackout-rapConnect with Breaking AtomsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/breaktheatomsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/breaktheatomsFollow SumitInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hiphopchronicleTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/hiphopchronicle Follow ChrisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamkinetikTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/iamkinetik Hosted on Acast. Ep 177Vice Beats
EThere are a select few people who have been on the show twice and Vice Beats is now one of them. We caught up with the Musician, Producer and friend of the show as he gears up to release his new album, Aspects (which is dope by the way). Vice shares what it was like to produce an album during the pandemic, having to adjust to recording alone, the importance of family and being hands-on with every aspect of the marketing and promotion. Some people make music and that's cool, but this guy really writes his lifetime in between the paper's lines.Pre-order 'Aspects' on vinyl from HHV: https://www.hhv.de/shop/en/item/vice-beats-aspects-978733Special thanks to Andy Kettle at Steaming Kettle PR for helping to arrange this interview.Connect with Breaking AtomsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/breaktheatomsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/breaktheatomsFollow SumitInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hiphopchronicleTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/hiphopchronicle Follow ChrisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamkinetikTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/iamkinetik Hosted on Acast. Ep 176DJ Spinna
EBucket list alert! We FINALLY got to speak with the legendary DJ Spinna! Look, fam. People keep throwing around the word underrated all willy-nilly, but this man is a God-level producer who is before his time, of his time and ahead of his time. We chatted about his early life in Brooklyn, becoming a DJ, transitioning into production, the 90s indie Hip Hop scene, working with J-Live and got into some early Jigmastas history. We even talked about the Basement Khemists, so yeah, this is one of those. At the end, we went into full-blown geek mode and talked about some of his classic songs, rare joints and remixes for De La Soul, Big Kwam, Masta Ace, Sadat X, Edo G and more.Connect with Breaking AtomsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/breaktheatomsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/breaktheatomsFollow SumitInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hiphopchronicleTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/hiphopchronicle Follow ChrisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamkinetikTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/iamkinetik Hosted on Acast. Ep 175The 'P' Word Is Not The Word To Play
EOn Sunday 2nd April 2023, YouTube star, KSI, was featured in a video with the Sidemen where he was heard using the word, 'p***', which is a racial slur aimed at people of South Asian descent and Brown skinned people in general - particularly in the UK. KSI's use of the slur has understandably caused a great deal of hurt in the South Asian community, many of whom are and were fans of his. Whilst KSI has since apologised, there are many people (including us) who feel that racism, discrimination and prejudice are really dealt with appropriately. We have a large international listenership and we feel it's important that we explain to our listeners why the 'p' word is so offensive whilst unpacking some of the history behind the word, memorialisng some of the people who have died behind it and more. It's deeper than rap.Connect with Breaking AtomsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/breaktheatomsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/breaktheatomsFollow SumitInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hiphopchronicleTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/hiphopchronicle Follow ChrisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamkinetikTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/iamkinetik Hosted on Acast. Ep 174The MOWO (Music of White Origin) Awards
EPeople love to say “I don’t see colour”. Yeah, right. But when it comes to music, it’s true for us. When the music bangs, it bangs. Don’t fight the feeling. We're Hip Hop heads, but we're music lovers first. This week’s episode is a fun conversation about some of our favourite songs by White artists. Some of our Caucasian brothers have been trained in the ancient art of The Funk™️, and we are here to recognise their rightful places in barbershop legend and cookout folklore. Ep 173Reuben Vincent
EIn his first ever UK interview, we linked up with the future legend, Reuben Vincent, to talk about the making of his new album, 'Love Is War', advice he received from Terrace Martin (a reeeaaaallll music man), rolling deep with Young Guru and lots more. Ep 172House Shoes
EWe stay in touch with the streets, and the streets said, "we want House Shoes on the podcast". So we made it happen. We linked up with the man to talk about his life, career, and everything in between. We go back to the early scene in Detroit, making his debut solo album, Let It Go, the importance of record stores in the community, and, as always, you can expect some good old-fashioned Rap nerd talk. Known for his outspokenness online and in real life, House Shoes pulls no punches regarding what he cares about; in this case, it's the music. Shout out to Lord Shuffle, Sean Kantrowitz, for the alley-oop in making this interview happen. Ep 171Justin Tinsley
EBefore we took our hiatus, we spoke to Writer Justin Tinsley, who had just released his book, It Was All A Dream. The book about the life of the late great Notorious B.I.G. was published in time for his 50th birthday. Brian Nolan from Motown Records calls it "a must-read for any hip-hop fan who seeks to understand the journey of one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. There are a number of important, never-been-told-before stories that Justin Tinsley deftly weaves throughout this biography to create a thorough, brilliant account of the legacy of the Notorious B.I.G". In this unearthed conversation, Justin talks about how he put the book together, what he learned during the writing process. We all go into full geek mode about some of our favourite Biggie songs. Ep 169Matthew "M-Eighty" Markoff
We told you we were back, and we meant it. So let's continue... this week's guest is A & R extraordinaire, M-Eighty. If you don't know who he is, then you were never inside the house reading those liner notes, and you should have your Hip Hop card revoked or defaced at the very least. You can see M-Eighty's name in the credits of some of the biggest and best indie Hip Hop records post-2000, and we talked to him about putting albums together and more. M-Eighty gave us his thoughts on a new Wu-Tang album, an update about 'Hiest of the Century 2' by La The Darkman, and even getting into a fight with Killah Priest. Tap in... Ep 168We Like You, But We Don't Like You
We're back! The kings have returned with the newest edition of what you've been missing! Shout out to Low Budget Crew. We originally wanted to take six weeks off but ended up taking six months off. No beef. No tension. Just some well-earned rest and a chance to handle some life admin. For our return episode, we talk more about what we were doing during our hiatus, why we like and don't like other podcasters and the status of our narrative podcast series on The War Report by Capone-N-Noreaga. Ep 167Dylan Green
We're back with a familiar face and voice. Dylan Green is a serious writer and friend of the show. He featured heavily in our series on The Blueprint, and we really wanted to learn more about him, his passions and what makes him tick. We got into music (obviously), but we also chopped it up about films, Mario Kart and more. Ep 166Premium Pete
Either the pandemic is over, or Jesus is coming back, or both. We recorded our first episode together live in the flesh for the first time in 3 years! Only someone who is a descendant of official tissue can pull a power move like this. We sat down with Premium Pete to talk about his early life in New York, his time on The Combat Jack Show, the genius of Just Blaze, the importance of Hip Hop in Corporate America, and his favourite characters from The Sopranos and more! RIP DJ Kay Slay. We lost a real one. Ep 165K-Nite 13
Another friend of the show pulls up to share his story and promote his wares. K-Nite 13 is one of the most talented people we know. With the beats, with the rhymes, he's always on point! We spoke to him about the latest instalment of his 'Nitefall' instrumental series, the influence of Calypso in his life and household, working with Your Old Droog and his relationship with Homeboy Sandman. Ep 164The Kathy Iandoli Fan Appreciation Society
Today, we pay homage to a fantastic writer, great mind and friend of the show. We rolled out the red carpet for none other than Kathy Iandoli. Kathy's work in the culture and heart for helping people makes her a real one in a world of fakery and posturing. We wanted to show love while she's still living in the flesh and let her know she gets props over here. Expect a fun chat, candid insight, silly jokes and heartfelt gratitude. Ep 163Buckwild
We've wanted to speak to Buckwild for a long time. His name often comes up in our Rap Nerd conversations, and the legacy of D.I.T.C. is something that fans or critics cannot quantify. Buck graciously spared some of his time to go through his career and life highlights. As expected, we talked about his classic work on 'Word... Life' and 'Jewelz' by O.C., 'Nineteen Ninety Now' by Celph Titled, 'Life Story' by Black Rob, 'Between A Rock & A Hard Place' by Artifacts, his 'Diggin In The Crates' remixes and more. What shines through the most is his appreciation for his supporters and how blessed he feels to be able to contribute to music in a meaningful way. Sales and plaques aside, Buckwild is a gift to the world and one of Hip Hop's most enduring talents. You can hear more from Buckwild in our upcoming podcast series celebrating the 25th anniversary of 'The War Report' by Capone-N-Noreaga. Look out for it dropping in June 2022! Ep 162Shortee Blitz
They say that time flies when you’re having fun. This week’s episode was originally recorded 18 months ago. We had some technical difficulties. Local files got corrupted and whatnot, but this episode was so nice, we edited it twice, and here we are. Our guest is a friend of the show and a living legend in our culture. Shortee Blitz is one of the best DJs ever. His list of hits and accolades are longer than the Hammersmith and City line. He’s rocked stages with HOF'ers, including De La Soul and LL Cool J and many more. He stays on the radio and his specialist Hip Hop show with DJ MK on Kiss plays actual music instead of favourites. When he’s not mashing up the dance with his expert selections, he gets to that TV money nicely. We don’t hate the player. Pun intended. Sumit and I got into so much of his business, it was like a police interrogation. We talked about his DJ roots, friendship with Ty, working at Rawkus and a lot more. Ep 161Genesis Elijah
We're keeping the love local this week, and we're joined by one of the hardest working emcees on Planet Earth. Genesis Elijah pulls up, sits down and gets real about the highs and lows of the independent grustle (grind and hustle), working with the MOBOs, playing Basketball and more. In true emcee fashion, he asserts his position as one of the best on the mic device. Ep 160Da Flyy Hooligan
We travel to North West London to break bread and reason with Da Flyy Hooligan. Hooli is a friend of the show and a friend in real life. This conversation has been years in the making, and we made it count. We talked about his new project Ben Kingsley, his blood connection with Micall Parknsun, soap operas and more! Ladies first - from now until forever. We're honoured to be joined by Scotland's very own, Arusa Qureshi, Author of the amazing new book, 'Flip The Script: How Women Came To Rule Rap'. Arusa shares her Hip Hop come up story, putting the book together, the Scottish Hip Hop scene and the importance of women in Hip Hop, past, present and future. Ep 158Rockness Monsta
We went deep beneath the muddy waters of Brownsville to find the Rockness Monsta for this week's episode. Rockness Monsta is the beast from the east who devours everything and everyone in his path - especially on record. Rock talks about his new 'Ether Rock' album with Ron Browz, the uniqueness of his voice, the 25th anniversary of 'Nocturnal' by Heltah Skeltah and unreleased Fab 5 music. Please note: we had some technical issues during the recording of this episode and some of the audio is a little distorted. Apologies in advance. Ep 157Dan Charnas
Real heads know what it means when February comes around. It's Dilla Month. It's only right that we recognise the man James Yancey by speaking to Author and Human Encyclopedia, Dan Charnas! In his first UK interview about his amazing book, Dilla Time, Dan waxes lyrical about documenting a loving ode to J Dilla, the city of Detroit and Black history. Ep 156Ty Farris
We have a certain reverence for the past over here, but we also know it's important to look forward. This week's guest is one of our favourite emcees right now. Ty Farris is fresh from Detroit and has a story to tell that you need to hear. He's raw. Honest. Vulnerable. And he raps really well. Ep 155EZ Elpee
You may not know the name, and you probably don't see the face. But we will bet our pension money that you know the music. This week's guest could co-opt the Most Known Unknown moniker from Three 6 Mafia. EZ Elpee has hits and classics and can drop as many of each as he wants at will. We found the Bronx Producer, and he pulled up to talk about his DJ roots, mentorship from Buckwild and Lord Finesse, being Capone-N-Noreaga's DJ during 'The War Report' era and making his return to music. He also reminisces on the making of 'Ghetto Millionaire' by Royal Flush, shares the story behind G Dep's 'Special Delivery' single, and deep dives into his work with Nas, Artifacts and Mad Skillz. Anthony Marshall and Danny Castro are the founders of the legendary Lyricist Lounge, which recently marked its 30th anniversary. Ant and Danny reminisce on the impactful performances, mythical battles, and more through the platform they created. They also talk about helping lay the foundation for Rawkus Records, their roles in helping to put Mos Def and Talib Kweli on, managing the Cella Dwellas and more! Ep 153Carl McIntosh (Loose Ends)
For our first episode of 2022, we spoke with a living legend in the world of music. Carl McIntosh is a name that kept coming up in our previous episodes, and even though we've always respected the levels, we had to find out why his name stayed on the tips of our guests' tongues. In this conversation, we talked about the early days of Loose Ends, Carl's admiration for Gang Starr, working with Pete Rock, how 50 Cent's BMF show has introduced Loose Ends to a whole new generation and much more. Thanks for listening, and happy new year! Ep 149The Apollo Brown Fan Appreciation Society
We've not done an episode without a special guest for a minute, but recent events have called for a tag team chinwag. Last week, Apollo Brown dropped 'Blacklight' with Stalley which is his 25th official release on Mello Music Group. Since 2010, Apollo Brown has worked with O.C., Guilty Simpson, Skyzoo, Che' Noir, Planet Asia, Raheem DeVaughn, Ras Kass, Ugly Heroes and more. It's been nearly a decade and a half since Apollo Brown first stepped on the scene. With a number of classic albums under his belt, we ask the question: is Apollo Brown now one of the all time great Hip Hop producers? We show love to one of our favourites and salute him for his greatness. Ep 148Wais P
Our esteemed guest this week has been in the game for a minute. Since the 90s actually. Wais P joins us to talk about his new album, 'T.A.P.A.S. 2' (to all playas and simps), which is one of the illest acronyms we've ever heard. We also talked about his debut on Jay-Z's 'Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life' album, relationship with Statik Selektah, bond with Ras Kass and finally getting on a track with Kxng Crooked. Wais has been tight with Jay-Z since the 'Reasonable Doubt' days. He had a guest appearance in the video for 'Dead Presidents'. If you blink, you might miss him, but he was there! With that said we had to get into some early Roc-A-Fella history, his come up in Da Ranjahz and reminisce on his Carter Faculty days. One of our favourite people in this whole world is Shawn Setaro and he definitely needs a 'friend of the show' shirt. Making his third appearance on the pod, he's back to talk about his new book, Dummy Boy, which details the rise and fall of 6ix9ine. It's not all about opps and shots though.
