Montanas Public Land Advocates Rally Against Proposed Forest Service Policy Change
Public land advocates in Montana are organizing community meetings to oppose a proposed Forest Service policy change that could open up millions of acres of national forests to more road building and logging. The roadless rule currently protects nearly sixty million acres nationwide, including over six million acres in Montana, by limiting those activities to preserve wild areas. Despite agency leaders calling the rule outdated and too limiting, over six hundred fifty thousand public comments urged the Forest Service to keep it intact. In response to the lack of official public hearings, conservation groups like Wild Montana and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers gathered over four thousand signatures on a petition, pushing for more public input. Grassroots meetings started last week and will wrap up soon in several Montana cities, giving locals a direct voice as the decision looms.
