In Butte, Montana, a unique initiative is underway to combat lead pollution. Crews are transforming a historic mine and timber yard into a clean dirt storage facility. This soil, certified by the EPA, will replace contaminated ground in numerous yards and gardens on the citys west side. The Residential Metals Abatement Program, a collaboration between Atlantic Richfield and Butte-Silver Bow, is making this possible. The program is free for all Butte-Silver Bow residents and aims to sample one thousand properties this year, with one hundred to one hundred fifty soil removals planned for 2026.
