Red Sox Trim Roster: Cheng Optioned, Monasterios Chances Boosted
The Boston Red Sox have made roster cuts ahead of opening day, optioning infielder Tsung-Che Cheng and Nick Sogard to minor league camp. Additionally, Max Ferguson, Tyler McDonough, Mikey Romero, Allan Castro, and Nathan Hickey were reassigned to minors. Cheng, who was claimed off waivers from the Nationals, has been designated for assignment multiple times this offseason and went 2 for 15 in spring training. This move clears space for infielder Andruw Monasterio, who has impressed with a .300 batting average, five walks, and nine hits this spring. Cheng, once a top prospect in the Pirates system, is seen as a low-risk addition with potential to develop into a solid role player for the Red Sox.
