Show Notes
The Ficklin family, spanning eight decades and thirteen presidents, served at the White House, from enslaved roots to national security roles. Wrory Ficklin, last family member there full-time, retired in 2015 after forty years. His father, John Woodson Ficklin, served as butler for forty-four years. The familys journey began with Wrorys grandfather, James Strother Ficklin, born enslaved in Virginia, who built a life after freedom and raised a big family. Woodson and his brother started at the White House in the 1930s, rising through the ranks after World War Two service. Wrory joined the White House, starting with Watergate errands and pantry work, then spending decades on national security. Wrory captured their journey in his book, An Unusual Path: Three Generations from Slavery to the White House.
