In 1923, Don Barksdale, a trailblazing basketball player, was born in Oakland, California. He became the first African American to earn an All-American nod in NCAA history at UCLA and won gold at the 1948 Olympics. Barksdale played for the Boston Celtics from 1949 to 1951, averaging 9 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. The Celtics secured their first playoff win in 1948, defeating the Chicago Stags. In the 1959 draft, the Celtics selected John Richter and Gene Guarilia, who contributed to their championship runs.
