S1 Ep 46#34 Propaganda Part I - Book Summary
Hey Wise WordiansWelcome back to another episode of ‘Wise Words Book Summaries’. Naturally, we thought it would be remiss of us to do a propaganda sequence and not summarise the original manual on propaganda itself - 'Propaganda' by Edward Bernal's, so here it is in two parts. Unlike the more modern books on propaganda that tend to emphasise the nefariousness of the topic, Bernays' approach is more academical, seeing it as a neutral mechanism that is essential to organise societies and influence the citizens to make the right choices in life. We covered topics such as:Organising ChaosThe New PropagandaThe New Propagandists The Psychology of Public RelationsBusiness and the PublicIf any of these topics sound interesting to you then make sure to give it a listen, and if you enjoy what you hear, why not leave us a like, subscribe to our channel, or even better, let us know your thoughts on propaganda in the comment section below, we would love to hear your take on it.Next week we will officially be finishing the propaganda sequence with the second part of 'Propaganda,' before turning our focus to habits, so make sure to stay tuned for that. S1 Ep 40#28 - Conflicted - Book Summary
Hey wise people, we’re back!Sorry its taken us so long to upload another book summary, you know how it is, exam season, summer, and all these endless bank holidays. But no need to worry, we’re back and looking to stay on track. To start you off we’ve summarised Conflicted by Ian Leslie which takes a refreshing new view of arguing, stating that we need to argue and have conflict now and then as it helps to bring us closer together, inspire us, and even improve our intelligence. The book is split into two key sections, why we should argue, and the nine rules of arguing productively. Jes and I touch on each one of these points throughout the episode, elaborating on them and drawing parallels with previous books we’ve read. S1 Ep 39Short Intros Ep.4 - Rhetoric
Hello wise people and welcome to our series 'Short Intros.' In this series, we focus on summarising books from the 'Very Short Introduction (VSI)' series published by Oxford University Press. ----------------- Welcome back, wise people. Today we are going to be summarising a Very Short Introduction to Rhetoric by Richard Toye.Rhetoric can be defined as the art of persuasion and although it has been viewed somewhat negatively throughout history, it is a tool like any other that derives its value from the person using it. The book is broken down into four key areas; the history of rhetoric, the structure of rhetoric, rhetorical analysis, and finally rhetoric in the modern world. Jes and I touch on each one of these areas, predominantly focusing on the structure and analysis of rhetoric. When deconstructing rhetoric, the first question we must ask is what is this person appealing to - ethos, pathos, or logos (character, emotions, logic). Once we understand the direction of the speech we can break it into its five canons; invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. We elaborate on each one of these points in this episode so make sure to give it a listen. If you enjoy it, you know what to do, give us a like or a comment, or alternatively subscribe or follow our channel. We hope you enjoy it. -------------------Chapters:00:00:00 Introduction00:03:01 History00:05:34 Branches of Oratory00:10:06 Ethos Pathos, and Logos00:23:49 The Five Canons00:31:34 Persuasive Techniques00:45:46 Visual Rhetoric00:51:45 Using Symbols00:55:22 Consider Your Audience01:02:38 Rhetorical Analysis01:06:17 Actionable Ideas If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: - Website: https://wisewords.blog/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

S1 Ep 38#27 - Difficult Conversations - Book Summary
Welcome back wise people to another episode of our Wise Word Book Summaries. This week we are summarising the book 'Difficult Conversations: How To Discuss What Matters Most' by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton & Sheila Heen.As the title suggests, this communication book offers a great guide on how to navigate tough conversations. It must be noted that before learning how to communicate properly we must first understand what conversations are made up of. By decoding hundreds of difficult conversations, the authors were able to identify three key areas that seemed to be responsible for the majority of problems. These are, 'what happened, 'people's feelings, and 'people's identity.Jes and I touch on each of these layers and try to offer suggestions on how you can implement them into your life and improve your communication skills. Now, you may notice that this episode is a little different to the normal ones as we have decided to add a bit more structure to it. We will now be breaking it into three key areas; a quick synopsis, the book summary, and finally actionable ideas. Do let us know what you think of it, as your feedback means a lot to us.If you enjoy this episode, make sure to leave us a like or a comment, and if you want to learn more, make sure to follow or subscribe to our channel so that you can be notified when we next bring out another episode. - If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

S1 Ep 37Short Intros Ep.3 - Jung
Hello wise people and welcome to our series 'Short Intros.'In this series, we focus on summarising books from the 'Very Short Introduction (VSI)' series published by Oxford University Press. -----------------We hope you had a good break, full of lots of festive cheer. I know we did.As you will have noticed we took a bit of time off, but now we are back and we have a bunch of plans in motion for the next couple of months to bring you some really great content. Today, however, we are summarising a Very Short Introduction to Jung by Anthony Stevens.Carl Jung was born in 1875 in Switzerland and was the founder of analytical psychology. He is well known for his work on the collective unconscious and archetypal potential and is considered to be a bit of a maverick in his own right. Now it's got to be said that Jung’s ideas aren’t the easiest to get your head around, so you have to stay open-minded, they’re essentially paradigms in themselves. Anthony Steven’s does a great job of summarising his biggest ideas which we try to elaborate on in this summary. We cover his Individuation process for self-growth, the collective unconscious, archetypal potential, stages of life, dream analysis and finally psychological types. Obviously, we won’t be able to do it justice and there is so much material out there that it is almost impossible to summarise in an hour, but we hope we are able to provide an insight into this great mind and some of his work which is still having an effect today. If you enjoy it, you know the drill, give us a like, a subscribe or a follow and if you’re feeling super inspired, why not leave us a comment and let us know your thoughts. S1 Ep 36#26 - Selfie - Book Summary
EHey wise listeners and welcome back to another episode of our wise words book summaries. This episode is on Selfie by Will Storr which tries to explore ‘the self’ from the perspective of the west in terms of individualism and in particular perfectionism. To do this, Will Storr approaches the self from a biological, social and cultural perspective. Tracing back the roots of individualism to Ancient Greece, he is able to show how the conceptualisation of the self has evolved through different historical periods and become what it is today. Jes and I touch on all three components with the odd detour now and then just to mix it up. Unfortunately due to some technical difficulties, we cut out halfway through but we rectified the issue in the post. We hope you enjoy it, it is a fascinating book which gives you a lot to think about especially as the need to portray oneself as perfect is constantly increasing with the help of social media. If you enjoy it, you know what to do, give us a like or leave us a comment so that we can know what you thought about it. Also, make sure to subscribe to our channel so that you can be kept up to date when we next bring out another episode. S1 Ep 35#25 - Social Warming - Book Summary
This episode on Social Warming by Charles Arthur takes a look at social media platforms and their negative effects on society caused by their business model as well as their increasing size; such as the breakdown of trust, the increase in fake news, and political polarisation. He uses real-world examples of how social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and WhatsApp have all played a role in the breakdown of society in one way or another. Jes and I explore a lot in this episode, touching on the three main areas mentioned previously as well as haywire algorithms, the consequences of amplifying negative and false information, the problems of incentivising lies and fake news, and finally the erosion of democracy. This is a poignant episode as currently, over 4 billion people in the world use some form of social media, and as this increases, so will the problems related to them. With a better understanding of how these platforms work, we can put forward solutions that focus on individual and societal commonalities rather than just differences. So with that being said, we hope you enjoy it, and if so, make sure you show us some love by leaving us a like, commenting or subscribing to our channel, because frankly why wouldn’t you, its free knowledge at your fingertips.-- If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

S1 Ep 32#23 - 12 More Rules for Life Part I - Book Summary
If you’ve been tuning in to our previous episodes you would’ve realised Jes and I are big fans of JBP (that is Jordan B. Peterson), so we thought it was about time we should summarise his new book '12 More Rules for Life - Beyond Order.' This book is in line with the previous book episodes on Shattered Assumptions and Evil as it conveys the same underlying concept of overcoming adversity and self-transformation. Now just like the last JBP book we summarised, we will also be splitting this into two episodes of 6 rules, that way we can cover all of it but in sufficient detail. The rules we will be summarising today are:Rule 1: Do not Carelessly Denigrate Social Institutions or Creative AchievementsRule 2: Imagine Who You Could Be and then Aim Single-mindedly at ThatRule 3: Do Not Hide Unwanted Things in the FogRule 4: Notice that Opportunity Lurks Where Responsibility has Been Abdicated Rule 5: Do Not Do What You HateRule 6: Abandon IdeologyIf you’re a fan of JBP (and frankly even if you’re not) you’re gonna love this. S1 Ep 31Short Intros Ep.1 - Philosophy
Hello good people and welcome to our new series 'Short Intros.'We are going to be moving on from our Roam Recap series to focus on summarising books from the 'Very Short Introduction (VSI)' series published by Oxford University Press. The VSI is a book series that introduces different subjects in a concise manner and is aimed at a general audience but written by experts. If you haven’t heard of them go and check them out. They are amazing and give you a real insight into practically any topic you can think of. I think there are around 630 of them as we speak and they bring out new ones every year, so if you ever feel like you need to dive into a subject, these books are perfect. Today we are reviewing 'A very Short Introduction to Philosophy.' We explore the three main questions posed in the book such as; what should we do? how do we know? and what am I? Each of these questions has been tackled by many famous philosophers and so we touch on a lot of their work throughout this recording. We also explore a lot of the isms such as materialism, idealism, dualism, rationalism, empiricism, scepticism and more. If this sounds of interest, do give it a listen and if you enjoy what you hear, do let us know, whether that be by leaving a like, following us or subscribing to our channel, it all makes a difference.--If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: - Website: https://wisewords.blog/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogStay tuned for more recaps. If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

S1 Ep 30#22 - Evil - Book Summary
This episode leads on from shattered assumptions in the sense that it looks at our assumptions about evil, what it is, how it manifests, and whether it actually exists. Roy Baumeister does an excellent job of defining what evil is and then taking us on a journey of how relatively normal people can become what we consider evil. The process that he describes in his book looks at the 4 key causes of evil; means to an end, egotism, idealism and lastly sadism. He then dives into the reasons how these 4 causes can even happen in the first place; ranging from a loss in self-control, ambiguity in following orders, and even emotional distress. This book really is fantastic. It reveals a whole other side to conflict and tries to give you the tools to see something from a perpetrators perspective. Nothing is ever black and white, instead, it tends to be a lot more complex than originally thought.Naturally, we probably won’t do it justice in which case if you enjoy the podcast, go and give the book a read, I 100% guarantee you won’t regret it. Also on another note, if you like what you hear, go and give us a like or subscribe to our channel so that you can be made aware when we next bring out another episode. S1 Ep 29#21 - Shattered Assumptions - Book Summary
If you’ve been tuning in for the last couple of episodes, you would’ve noticed that we’ve been touching a lot on the topic of trauma. This book is a perfect accompaniment to the others as it explains how we construct a framework of the world and what happens when it is broken or in this case, shattered due to a traumatic event.Although this book refers to people who have experienced traumatic events, it is applicable to anyone as it reflects what happens when an assumption of any kind is broken… therefore causing anxiety. This book is probably the simplest to follow in this series of trauma books we have reviewed. It lays out a clear process from beginning to end, starting with how people create assumptions of the world, then how these assumptions are maintained, how these assumptions benefit the individual, what happens when these assumptions are shattered, and finally how to rebuild them. This is a fantastic book which I would recommend to anyone. It’s an incredibly easy read, yet full of content that changes how you see the world. It’s one of those books that when you put it down, you see the content being acted out by people all around you.Now if that sounds good, do give it a listen and if you enjoy it, do let us know, by leaving us a comment or sending us a DM. S1 Ep 28#20 - The Myth of Mental Illness - Book Summary
The Myth of Mentall Illness book summary can be found here - https://wisewords.blog/book-summaries/myth-of-mental-illness-book-summary/Today we are reviewing 'The Myth of Mental Illness by Dr Thomas Szasz which gives a critique of the psychiatric field and tries to explain why there is no such thing as mental illness. Now as you can tell by the title of this episode, this is quite a controversial book, we mean no offence but we thought it would be interesting to review it and see how it compares with the mainstream idea of therapeutics and psychiatry. Dr Szasz’s main point about mental illness is that it refers to the mind, which is not a biological construct but a mere abstraction of the brain, thus suggesting that there is no such thing as mental illness as any illness must be biological. How this biological illness may have started is a different matter. The book is based around the concept of diagnosing something based on biological or environmental causes. How do you tell which is having an effect on the individual and how should one go about helping that individual, a drug for a biological cause or therapy for an environmental one. In this episode, we touch on many topics such as incentives to diagnose, free will in regard to overcoming an illness, drugs and whether they are a solution, and much more.I do recommend you give it a listen, if anything it just makes you question the system that we take so freely for granted. Whether he is right in his observations, it is an interesting listen that I guarantee will spark a bit of interest. S1 Ep 27Roam Recap Ep.8
In our roam recap podcast, Jes and I review some of our weekly notes and discuss topics that we weren't able to talk about in our book review episodes.--Today we kept it short and sweet only touching on a few topics:Emotional Conjugations - how by using specific adjectives, one can distort an interpretation of an event/ action. Arguing with specificity - how it is better to argue on a specific level rather than a general one in order to get to the crux of an issue.Refining assumptions - how refining one's assumptions through the acquisition of knowledge and experience can lead to a better outcome and provide a better framework to navigate the world. Ownership and patenting - how ownership and patenting is negatively impacting collaboration and innovation which is ultimately having a major impact on fields that should be progressing such as medicine, law, etc.If any of these areas sound interesting to you, do give it a listen and be sure to let us know what you thought of it, whether that be in the comment section below or via a DM to our Instagram account. S1 Ep 26#19 - The Body Keeps the Score - Book Summary
The incredibly well-received book ‘The Body Keeps the Score’ by Bessel Van Der Kolk dives into the world of trauma and methods of rehabilitation. Van der Kolk argues that conventional methods of treatment such as prescription drugs only deal with the symptoms whereas the methods he emphasises tend to do a lot more to help the underlying problem. Being a pioneer of the field and having had over 30+ years of dealing with traumatised victims, Van der Kolk has been able to observe that the brain, mind and body all play an equal part in dealing with traumatic events. These insights have allowed him to try out new methods of treatment and determine their efficacy. Jes and I explore a lot in this episode, touching on how trauma victims experience, struggle, cope and overcome traumatic events. This book really is fascinating and anyone from the slightly anxious, to the unfortunate victims of trauma should definitely read it. --If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

S1 Ep 25Roam Recap Ep.7
In our roam recap podcast, Jes and I review some of our weekly notes and discuss topics that we weren't able to talk about in our book review episodes.--Today we touched on some really interesting topics such as:The direction of thoughts - how by keeping track of your thoughts by noting them down and referencing them you are able to see which direction they were going in, allowing you to pick up where you came from and continue your chain of thought. Gymnastics - how its ethos of training your muscles full range of motion compares to the standardised methods in gyms that predominantly focus on concentrated movements. Music and Emotions - How music affects our emotions and whether producing music can be used as a way of training your internal gauge and intuition. Attachment theory - how children acquire 3 main assumptions as they come into this world; these being that the world is benevolent, the world is meaningful and finally that the self is worthy. If any of these areas sound interesting to you, do give it a listen and be sure to let us know what you thought of it, whether that be in the comment section below or via a DM to our Instagram account. --If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: - Website: https://wisewords.blog/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogStay tuned for more recaps.

S1 Ep 24#18 - Mistakes Were Made (but not by me) - Book Summary
Mistakes Were Made (but not by me) is a fantastic book by Carol Tavris and Eliot Aronson. It explores the world of excuses, self-justification, false memories and much more. The book summary write up can be found on - https://wisewords.blog/book-summaries/mistakes-were-made/A lot of the time, we tend to act in ways that are incongruent with how we see ourselves, however, in order to make ourselves feel better about it we create reasons that justify our behaviour. For example, an individual may see themselves as honest, meaning that when they do lie they are more inclined to justify their actions as it goes against their core identity. They may come up with an excuse such as "I didn't lie, I just slightly exaggerated". This allows them to keep their previously held beliefs intact while also committing actions that go against them. This book really is fascinating and I would strongly recommend it to everyone. We all make mistakes and excuses now and then, but hopefully from this podcast, you will be in a better place to tackle them and put them right.

S1 Ep 22#17 - Made to Stick - Book Summary
EMade to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath is such a great book, one that is well written as well as so simply laid out. This is thanks to their acronym which they like to attribute to making things memorable - SUCCES.Simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional and stories. Each one of these is crucial in the ability to express ideas in a way that is easy to understand and therefore more memorable. Jes and I explore each one of these elements in-depth while also touching on topics such as the curse of knowledge, lack of common language and abstraction. This book really is good for anyone who is looking to make an idea of theirs stick, whether that's pitching a client an idea or just having a conversation with someone, as long as you follow this structure, you are unlikely to go wrong. --If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms: - Website: https://wisewords.blog/ - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/ - Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

S1 Ep 19#15 - 12 Rules for Life Part I - Book Summary
12 Rules for Life is a fantastic book written by no other than Jordan B Peterson. As the name suggests, it is made up of 12 rules that he believes to be beneficial to your life. The full write up of the book summary is here - https://wisewords.blog/book-summaries/12-rules-for-life-book-summary/The book itself has a lot of religious examples from the Bible as well as evidence from clinical psychology and philosophy to illustrate his points. The idea behind this is that due to the scientific revolution we have lost touch with any of our moral guidelines, guidelines that aren't quite provable by science but are no less important to the success of our society. Can you prove that killing someone is scientifically wrong? Can you prove that stealing is scientifically wrong? We need the bridge of both science and morals to keep society together and progressing. Stories hold an essence of truth, a truth that can't be seen under a microscope but can be felt by every individual. Peterson does his best to interpret why certain stories have been passed down for millennia and what can be abstracted from them in order to improve life for the individual and therefore for society. -- If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

S1 Ep 18Roam Recap Ep.4
In our roam recap podcast, Jes and I review some of our weekly notes, notes that we weren't able to talk about in our book review episodes. This weeks episode, we explore one of Jordan B Petersons papers 'Three forms of meaning and the management of complexity.' This is an incredible paper and sheds light on how we envisage the world and how objects present themselves to us.In addition to this, we also talk about low and high-resolution categories, what rules govern them and whether or not these rules are vulnerable to inaccuracies. This lead nicely to exploring clarity and assumptions, particularly how low clarity or high vagueness can lead to people misinterpreting something and therefore project their assumptions to fill the whole context. S1 Ep 17#14 - The Origins of Virtue - Book Summary
The Origins of Virtue written Book Summary can be found on https://wisewords.blog/book-summaries/origins-of-virtue-book-summary/In 1976 Richard Dawkins shone a light on our inherently selfish behaviour with his 'Selfish Gene Theory.' This has been an ultimate force in understanding mankind from an evolutionary perspective. This finding is rather odd when you consider that we are social creatures that have managed to build global societies through altruistic behaviour. So how can an individual be both inherently selfish and yet behave in what seems an altruistic manner? In 'The Origins of Virtue' Matt Ridley dives into the real reasons for altruistic behaviour and and how this ties in with our selfish programming.-- If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

S1 Ep 16Roam Recap Ep.3
In our roam recap podcast, Jes and I review some of our weekly notes, notes that we weren't able to talk about in our book review episodes. This weeks episode, we look at the origins of anxiety and how it manifests in society. We also dive into the benefits of understanding abstract concepts and applying them to other areas of life. In addition to this, we touch on stories, particularly the heroes journey and how it is relevant to anyone who has overcome adversity... this being everyone. And finally, we review the impacts of labelling and how a binary approach to things can be detrimental. If any of these areas sound interesting to you, give it a listen and be sure to let us know what you thought of it.Stay tuned for more recaps.

S1 Ep 15#13 - Peak - Book Summary
This is Book Summary of Peak by Anders Ericcson. The full write up can be found here - https://wisewords.blog/book-summaries/peak-book-summary/Would you like the ability to get better at anything? To have the superpower to improve at anything you put your mind to? Well, 'Peak' by Anders Ericsson and Robert Pool does exactly that. This fantastic book goes into detail about why some people excel at certain skills and others find it hard. We are constantly fed this narrative that more equals better, that it only requires 10000 hours for you to become an expert at anything, however, this isn't quite the case. It isn't about the amount of time so much as the quality of time you put in. The book addresses a lot to do with the mythology of effortless ability and how there's no such thing... not even with natural talent. The real way to improve at something is through what they call 'deliberate practice,' the concept of improving at something by pushing beyond ones comfort zone, working towards specific goals, focusing intently on the activity at hand, receiving high-quality feedback and then finally refining ones mental representations of that skill. This book really inspires the reader as the notion of 'anything is possible' really starts to sink in... all you have to do is practice.-- If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlogYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEWeK869x5kMOadyLiW2zQgIf you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:Website: https://wisewords.blog/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog
